My fake trade
Here it is:
Randy Winn and Henry Sosa, Pucetas, or Jesse English for Phil Hughes (Giants take on $2-3 mil of his contract)
1. This solves the Yankees CF problem and gives them a solid bat
2. Clears the way for Nate to take over RF
3. Clears a spot for a possible Dunn or Pat Burrell signing
Imagine a rotation of Lincecum, Cain, Sanchez, Hughes, Zito with MadBum and Alderson waiting in the wings?
Yes? No? Too much? Too little? Talk amongst yourselves

I Think I Prefer Any Of Sosa, Pucetas, And English To Hughes One For One
Phil Hughes and Homer Bailey are two top rated prospects that I think have shown me enough bad things at the MLB level to convience me they are not the pitchers their prospect reputations pretend them to be.
If we trade Rndy Winn there is no way we should have to pay any of his salary. Randy is actually paid below his market value.

Gut Feel - Absolutely
If say neither we Giants, both were exposed to the Rule 5 Draft, and I was responsible to make the draft choice then I would select Hughes and hate myself for not having the guts to go with my gut and instead making the conventional wisdom selection.

thinking of John Van Benschoten, #8 overall pick of the 2001 draft by the Pittsburgh Pirates. Many clubs wanted to draft him as a power bat OF, but the Pirates liked him more as a pitcher. Performed well until an unending series of shoulder and arm injuries/surgeries did him in.

no one else seems to agree so far, but I'd pull the trigger on this...
Hughes has struggled, but he’s still young and he had really, really good minor league numbers. He has the stuff to be a very good pitcher and would probably benefit from a change of scenery and a drop in expectations due to being traded for Winn.

Is Phil Hughes really damaged goods? I think he had a couple years of unlucky injuries, but before that he was ranked right up there with Lincecum as a prospect. If the Yankees wanted to trade him, I’d be very interested. Not sure about the Winn etc proposed package — I’d need more info about Hughes’s medical outlook.

I don’t think he’s damaged goods. His injuries weren’t related to his arm, which is good (hamstring in ‘07 and oblique in ’08). He might not be as good as he was hyped to be (Yankee prospect, lol) but, he’s still a good prospect and I would take him over Pucetas and English in a second.

I really feel that this is close to the peak of the value we could expect for Winn. The deal sheds salary, fills in the end of the rotation (Hughes>Pucetas) and clears PT for Nate. You can debate Sosa v Pucetas v English all you want and there might be some merit to keeping Sosa (as jpons alluded to), but Hughes has the tools and is already in the majors.

Winn and Sosa for Hughes would be an absolute steal. The Yankees need CF help but they would never do that. We’d have to toss in a much better prospect to go with Winn and Sosa.

No way the Yankees make that deal. They still have Melky Cabrera if the Mike Cameron deal falls through. And I think they view Hughes the same way the Giants view Sanchez. The value for both is low compared to their upside. If the Yankees wouldn’t include him in a trade for Johann they aren’t going to take this trade.
Of course, if they were willing, I would do it in a second.

With a choice between the 2, I would pick Hughes. I only equated them in the similarity each has to their club. As the Giants are not ging to give away Sanchez at his current trade value (I hope), the Yankees aren’t going to trade away Hughes at his current value either. Both of them have upsides that are higher than what the teams could get in return.

So Cain and Cheechoo for Brady and Lars? Hmmm, I’d name a San Jose Earthquake to balance it our further, but I can’t.
Pele, does he play for them?

Probably. If he doesn’t, Boston probably won’t figure it out until it’s too late, so we’re good.

Cheechoo’s always getting injured, let’s get Shelley instead. I think he’d enjoy Juggernating a catcher or two.

You're
too young to know Jeff Fuller. Bless you and may you have a Merry Christmas. You, too, Marcelo and Natto.

1. This solves the Yankees CF problem and gives them a solid bat
2. Clears the way for Nate to take over RF
3. Clears a spot for a possible Dunn or Pat Burrell signing
I believe the above answers your question.
You don’t have to agree. But your question was answered before you even asked it…

I think Phil Hughes is going to be a star, but only if he gets out of New York. He’ll never get a shot with the Yankees after last year, when Cashman refused to trade him for Johan Santana. He’ll get spot starts here and there, but if he doesn’t dominate he’ll go right back to the minors.

I feel like the Yankees are almost required to give him another shot
They held on to him when they clearly could’ve used him to get an elite pitcher in Santana, so it would be in their best interest to give him another season to see what he can do

I’d love to have Phil Hughes. He’s risky, of course, but the Giants are in a position where they can trade certainty for upside risk.

So Basically You Want the Gyros to Suck
You want to take away one of the only consistent Giants producers (Winn) to get a big injury-risk, unproven pitcher (Phil Hughes), and sign a guy in Dunn that strikes out too much. Think about Rowand, Lewis, and Dunn in the first 4 spots of the line-up. That’d be 400+ strikeouts (aka: pointless outs) in one year between three guys in the first part of the line-up. No thanks.
It’s true that Hughes COULD be something special. And it’s true that Dunn COULD hit 30-35 HRs in our backyard. Anchor Steam COULD be reasonably priced at the Park, and Lou Seal COULD be less annoying, but let’s not focus on what COULD be and let’s focus on what things actually are.

Well then
How exactly are you so sure that Winn won’t put up another .265 season like he did in 06? Also, he’s in his mid-30s, and he’ll be a free agent after this season.
Everything in baseball is a risk- it’s just a matter of which ones you take, and which ones you pass on.

Sosa
I might take Sosa out of the mix, but I would indeed trade both Randy Winn and any of the other starters mentioned for Phil Hughes. Heck, if pushed, I’d probably even go Sosa.
Phil has struggled with injuries the past two seasons, but two years ago he was the consensus #1 pitching prospect ahead even of Tim Lincecum. I believe Phil is still only 22.
By the way, the only way this deal could possibly make sense for the Yankees would be if they fell Randy can fill their center field near-void. Keep in mind too that Randy has a limited no-trade clause, so he might be able to block a trade to the Yankees. On the other hand, since it would seem to give him the best shot at a ring, he might well relish the idea.
