Furcal to Braves
Of course, it's a "source" of Ken Rosenthal's....still a 3/30 deal? Wasn't the A's deal better? At least this means Sabean can't sign him.

I wonder if this means they’ll send Yunel to SD in a Peavy trade? I know that trade is supposed to be dead but I think they could trade Yunel somewhere.

Yunel to SD
That makes a lot of sense. Escobar is a really nice all-around player, and the Pads could definitely use the help at short in in that lineup. What do you guys think that the Braves would have to throw in besides Escobar to land a blue chipper like Peavy?
And it looks like the Braves offered Furcal 4/40

I know..
That’s one thing that he just basically did not want to sign with the A’s at all.

I am shocked that the tour that Beane gave of the Oakland Coliseum did not persuade Furcal!!

Anyone who says an unkind word about Oakland has to answer to me.
Of course, the part of town the Coliseum is in isn’t the best spot.

Yes, if only they'd cruised through Temescal.
Lord knows Frank Thomas signed with Oakland for the keggers with CCA kids.

Hmm. Y’see, I live in Temescal, but I think of CCA as being Rockridge. As normally defined, Temescal doesn’t extend east past Telegraph Ave. or so.

The city government is a clown car of stupidity. Same can be said of SF’s city government, though.
"While conservatives tell you 'leave things alone and no one will lose,' and liberals tell you 'interfere a lot and no one will lose,' baseball says 'someone will lose.' Not only says it - but insists upon it! ... Democracy is lovely, but baseball's more mature." BVCE supports SF Dugout and Manny Burriss.

I think A's fans are going to look back and say, " Thank goodness that never happened. And just what was I thinking?"
I also think the pursuit was a very good sign. They have need and ownership was not adverse to risking some coin in an effort to improve the on field product.

they should move Yunel to 2nd. Man, that would be one hell of a middle infield

I’d keep Yunel at SS, he was one of the better defenders at SS last year (plus/minus went crazy for him, bUZR said he was above average). I think it probably makes sense to trade Escobar for something good, if they can swing it.

I don’t know. I have no clue as to what the Braves need. I’d flip them Sanchez and Sosa for Yunel in a heartbeat.
I really like Escobar.

could Sanchez, Lewis, and Sosa get it done? They are pretty desperate for OFs (especially if they trade Yunel and thus don’t put Kelly Johnson out there).

I don’t know, I suck at rosterbation. I would think it might take another player?
They’ll use Escobar in a Peavy trade before they move him anywhere else.

that's a good point
this (along with missing out on Burnett) probably puts the Peavy trade back on as a major possibility for them.

Maybe they could take Rowand off our hands? Wishful thinking I know… but they do need a CF. And Johnson’s defense in LF would probably be good.
Maybe Sanchez and Rowand for Gorkys Hernandez and 2 of 3 of Locke/Rohrborough/Teheran? I’m assuming Hanson, Heyward, and Schaefer wouldn’t be on the table if there was a discussion for just Rowand and Sanchez…

can we stop with all of this trading Rowand
Even if there was a team out there that might be willing to take on Rowand’s contract (which there is not) there is no way the Giants are going to trade him one year after signing him to a long term deal. As I asked in another thread: give me an example of a team signing somebody to a long term contract and then trading him within a year (the only example we could come up with was Carlos Delgado). I can just see the Giants trying to negotiate with free agents in the future “so, are you actually going to honor my contract, or are you going to trade me as soon as your plans change?”

Wishful thinking
Trading Winn would be more realistic, but I highly doubt the two FO’s are talking. I just like thinking about not having Rowand’s years 4 and 5 on the books over here….

I guess wishful thinking is ok. Let’s trade Aaron Rowand, and Pablo Sandoval is just as good as Russell Martin!

well, with the whole “Pablo Sandoval is just as good as Russell Martin” line of thinking, why should we even give up Cain or Sanchez? Why not Lowry for Fielder?

Second year in a row Sabean bit on a SS early in the process and possibly signed the wrong guy. Furcal at 3yrs/$30MM is a very good signing for Atlanta.
by wilriv21 on Dec 16, 2008 12:29 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, but Renteria’s deal is shorter and without the health risks. Maybe Furcal just didn’t want to play in the bay area? Oakland was offering another year and $10M extra and he went back to Atlanta.

I think it was more that he just didn't want to play in Oakland
All kidding aside, it’s not a very desirable situation, they are a low revenue team that plays in a terrible stadium in front of some of the smallest crowds in the league, their Fremont Stadium plan is all but dead, they are a 2nd team in a market that is barely capable of supporting two teams, and they don’t even have a full television contract
