Braves system/Giants System

"

Henry T from Tiburon, CA asks:
Hello and thank you for the chat. Without giving much thought the two best farm systems in the national league may very well be those of the Giants and Braves if you were a GM and you could pick 1 to start your team with, whose farm system would you choose?

 A:

Bill Ballew: I would take the Braves' farm system due to the depth at a variety of positions. The Giants have excellent pitching depth, particularly with Madison Bumgarner, Tim Alderson and a handful of others. But the Giants' inability to develop any significant talent among everyday players at the major league level and Brian Sabean's poor decision-making on the free agent market (Edgardo Alfonzo, Michael Tucker, Dave Roberts, Edgar Renteria) makes me wonder if the Giants will ever develop a young team with long-term potential."

Doesn't this seem like a lame answer to anyone else? He based his decision off of Brian Sabean's decision making. But the real question is.......which system would you rather have?

I’m pretty sure that as his answer last season and instead of doing research he just added Bumgarner, Alderson and Renteria’s names.

Well, considering I am a homer

I would definitely take the Giants. Sabes has made huge strides the last two years and think that after ‘09 with another season of development and a high draft pick, we could have the better system. I think the fact that it has been such a quick turn around should factor in as well. But I’d have to give the edge to the Bravos at the higher levels, and the Giants by a mile in the lower levels. Only time will tell.

If God had intended us not to rosterbate, he would've made our arms shorter.

seems kinda lame, especially since it seems like SF is on the verge of actually developing two competent everyday players to go with that pitching. Lewis is slightly better than average in left, and if Sandoval can put together a solid 2009 I think we can finally put that “OMG, where are the position playerzzzz” attitude to bed.

It was so frustrating to watch Renteria flop in a Giants’ uniform. What a stupid signing, and I’m not just saying that in retrospect.

I was totally against it from day 1

They should have kept Burriss instead of trading him to the Phillies for Raul Ibanez at the deadline.

Yeah, The Ibanez trade sucked....

it didn’t get any better after the Giants dropped out of contention when they flipped Ibanez and Sanchez for Cantu at the waiver wire.

It'll all work out

Because Nate will take over in 2010 after that monster season in Fresno.

Don't think, it could only hurt the ballclub.

C’mon, it wasn’t that bad. Besides, he looked good in a Giants uni and I really enjoyed his post-game comments.

Why is Renteria a poor decision? The Giants probably overspent, but the contract is short, Renteria isn’t blocking anyone (Burriss can play 2B) and at least a couple smart people (like Keith Law and Dave Cameron of Fangraphs) think Renteria will be better than his first-half 2008 numbers.

Braves vs Giants farm systems

Just looking at John Sickels lists, he has the Braves rated with 13 B- or better players and they traded one of them (Flowers) to the White Sox in the Vasquez deal. The Giants list is not out yet, but he had Villalona, Sosa, Alderson, Bumgarner, Noonan, and Tanner as B- or better last year and I doubt any of them have fallen to Cs. You would expect that Posey and Gillaspie would for sure be B- or better. The other possibilities would be Pucetas, Rodriguez, Kieschnick, Adrianza, and maybe Barnes. In any event we probably will be rated lower than the Braves by Sickels.

Most will rate the Rangers and As with the best systems followed by the Rays and Braves. We’re probably with the Orioles and Marlins in the next group.

Depth at a variety of systems? All I’m seeing are a bunch of pitchers, an outfielder, and one stud infielder…. someone help me out here

Braves have weakened the top of their system with the recent trade of Flowers, but it does seem like you’re short-changing their OF depth. Heyward, Schaefer, and Gorkys Hernandez is a heck of an OF troika, prospect wise.

Interesting (given the recent glut of OF semi-prospects we’ve had), OF has become a huge hole in our system at the moment. Get past Nate, and I’m not sure there was even a poor OF prospect at any level above rookie ball last year. With Gillaspie around, the OF is even more of a black hole than our traditional 1B gutter. Really as far as position players, we’ve got some middle infielders, a stud catcher, hopefully a stud power bat at 1b, and that’s about it.

And our other weakness (surprise, surprise) is power. After AnVil, who’s the next bat power bat in the system? A potential role player like Witter? A (to me) total non-prospect like D’Allessio? Downs, maybe? Our power dearth is not confined to the majors and it’s not an accident. For all the praise people hear laud on the last few drafts, the ‘06 draft (after Lincecum) seemed overtly hostile to anybody with offensive potential (the Burriss, Bocock, McBryde, Rohlinger, etc draft), and the ’07 and ’08 drafts consistently passed up high upside power bats for high upside pitching and “speed and defense” athletic types (Fairley, Noonan, Culberson, Williams, Posey, Crawford, Gillaspie). At some point we’ll have to rely on FA or trades to address our power issues.

Well..

After AnVil there’s only the past prospect status of Sandoval or Schierholtz for any power I guess. Posey I thought was supposed to have mediocre power, or at least the potential for it.

Speed, defense... and an almost fanatical devotion to getting picked off.

It looks like Sandoval could well be one of those players who’s power develops late. Going into the ‘07 season he’d hit 4 HRs in 3 minor league seasons. In the second half of ’07 his power suddenly blossomed and he finished with 13 HRs including the playoffs (predominantly hit in the second half of the season, he had only 4 on June 1) before going on to hit 23 in ’08.
