Brad Lidge resides in the Nl East? and there is no Hinshaw? AGain I made this post on a giants blog so it’s biased

not to mention that he still has Sergio Mitre on there (who is currently working his way back from Tommy John surgery in the Yankees organization)

Emmanuel Burriss is on your “dream” team? You should probably wake up from that dream and watch Blake DeWitt. Also, this may be considered blasphemy around here, but you left off the single best position player in the division, Russell Martin.

why would it be wrong? you could say Kemp could stay in CF for quite sometime and can put up 300./360.500 25hr 100rbi 30 sb’s as a center fielder next year. In my mind it’s very debatable but not outright “wrong”
Kemp isn’t a good CF, Martin’s the correct choice here. Upton, if you want to go with upside.

Okay
Billingsley is already arguably better and is what 4 years younger? A whole lot cheaper. Cain: when Haren was 23 he only threw 46 innings in the majors compared to Cain when he was 23 threw 217 with a 3.76 era and 186 k’s and is much cheaper. Remember cost and the future matter as well. Kershaw’s ceiling is ridiculous and I also wanted to throw in a lefty
Haren’s contract is pretty awesome.

Probably should be
Lincecum, Webb, Peavy, Haren, Billingsley.

I'll admit
this is the most biased post ever but in order to fit in Cain I counted Peavy as good as gone

Adopted Giant: Aaron King

as opposed to what? its not like they both have long track records that i’m ignoring. i’m looking at the fact that tulo was horrible for a lot of last year, and was injured for a lot of the season as well. drew had a very solid season, stayed healthy, and has more major league experience. i’d rank them pretty close together, but as of right now i’d take drew over tulo.
by TimLincecumIsGod on Dec 15, 2008 4:16 PM PST up reply actions
I do not concur
It is just my opinion, but Troy Tulowitzki is the best shortstop in the NL, his injury-marred 2008 notwithstanding. Drew has a lot of promise, and most likely will be very good. Tulo is better.
If I could blow up the Giants’ offense, and select anybody, I’d begin with Tulowitzki and Longoria.
Sergio Romo: striking out professional hitters since 2005.
Hanley and Longoria, I think you mean.

I’d have to think about it. Utley is a beast, but he’s already 30, so if you’re weighing long term as well….it’d be close.

The vast difference on defense still makes it at least very close.

Utley was actually more valuable defensively than he was offensively last year.

PABLO SANDOVAL AM STEAL DEATH, DESTROYER OF WORLDS.
Hey now
I wouldn’t say that. You’re probably referring to his ridiculous +/- of +47, but that has to be a fluke – it’s just way better than anything he had ever posted before. More accurate systems (UZR and PMR) had him at 15-20 runs above average, which is more in line with his career numbers. Offensively, he was more like 40 runs above average for his position, which obviously adds up to a fantastic ballplayer.
But I’d still take Hanley over him.
..so allow me to present Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain as two sweet, sweet bottles of warming hooch.
HanRam’s 2008 fielding performance was also probably a fluke….
Adopted Giant: Aaron King

I don't know
It’s much easier for me to believe that a 24 y-o, extremely athletic guy like Ramirez managed to drastically improve his defense, especially since it’s supported by all of the play-by-play metrics, not just +/-.
..so allow me to present Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain as two sweet, sweet bottles of warming hooch.

So you’re going to discount the year before where Tulo tore it up both offensively and defensively (the latter being something Drew will never do at short) while Drew sucked it up? I’m not saying that Tulo’s definitely better or that Drew’s recent performance doesn’t mean a lot but just going by one year’s worth of performance isn’t the way to go.

no, I’m taking both years into consideration. When both one has had one good year and one year that was bad and partially injurious and the other one had a bad year and a decent year (because he gave away a bunch of runs with his glove), I think it’s close to a wash right now.

well
only when you combine Cain and Lincecum
Billingsley and Kershaw both get an edge over Cain in my book. Cain has the potential to repass Billingsley, but right now there’s no way you can give Cain the edge over Billingsley
by NeifiChicken on Dec 15, 2008 1:15 PM PST up reply actions
what’s Kershaw done to earn that spot though? The guy misses bats, to be sure, but he also misses the strike zone just as much.
Well the subject said going forward and I personally think Kershaw has the brighter future going forward. It’s tough though, as Cain is certainly more proven.
Both have taken a similar path to the bigs, but I guess in my mind Kershaw being left handed had some sort of edge. Plus I feel like Kershaw’s stuff is more electric.
I think most people would take Cain though, and that is a good answer too. I think either way, you are very happy

If
If I could trade Matt Cain for Clayton Kershaw, I would do so before the Dodgers came to their senses.
Yes, Matt is the better pitcher at this point. But Matt was also drafted four years ahead of Kershaw. Kershaw’s ceiling appears to be much higher, and his career could conceivably last four years later than Matt’s.
Since championships are won by stars and superstars, I will usually take the higher-ceilinged player. Clayton could wind up being close to Tim Lincecum. I would be shocked if Matt were to do so.
Matt just flat-out doesn’t have the swing-through stuff to become a superstar. I believe he can improve if he improves his control, but he walks almost twice as many hitters as Don Drysdale, so IMO he’s got a long way to go control-wise to become anything approaching a superstar.
Lincecum and Kershaw are the Koufaxes, while Billingsley and Cain are the Drysdales. And Billingsley would seem to be more likely to approach Drysdale than Matt is.
Three seasons ago I noted that Craig and Matt were similar. At that point I believed that Matt was slightly better. I was right that the two are similar, but I thus far have been wrong about the leader between the two.
Matt just flat-out doesn’t have the swing-through stuff to become a superstar.
That’s probably debatable. I don’t know if he’ll become a superstar — few players do — but he does have “swing-through stuff”. He’s posted above average K-swinging rates the last few years.

There will always be scrubs..
On every championship team. But what gets you there are the stars and superstars on the team. Albert Pujols, Scott Rolen, Jim Edmonds all had good to great years, and from the bench Chris Duncan and Scott Spiezio both had very good years. It also helped having Chris Carpenter go crazy on the world and Jeff Suppan go crazy on Jeff Suppan. They also had a strong bullpen.
In fact, David Eckstein had a better year than their starting C, 2B, and LF in 2006.

For the love of all that is holy
please don’t compare Timothy LeRoy to Kershaw. I know Timmy got started a little later, but good god. Just look at the numbers.
Lincecum:
Minors: 13 GS, 63 IP, 104 SO, 1.00 ERA, 0.78 WHIP
Rookie Year: 24 GS, 146 IP, 150 SO, 111 ERA+, 1.28 WHIP
(I don’t think I need to show this year’s numbers)
Kershaw (who was promoted from AA):
Minors: 44 GS, 220 IP, 276 SO, 2.49 ERA, 1.12 WHIP
Rookie Year: 21 GS, 107.2 IP, 100 SO, 100 ERA+
IMO, Cain would be a much better comparison that to Cain who was the same age when promoted. He was also kinda having a meh year at AAA before getting called up which hurts his overall minor #’s:
Cain:
Minors: 75 GS, 397.2 IP, 447 SO, 3.33 ERA, 1.22 WHIP
Rookie Year: 31 GS, 190.2 IP, 179 SO, 108 ERA+, 1.28 WHIP
That also completely ignores when he was first called up but didn’t qualify as a rookie and put up an insane 183 ERA+ in his first 7 games in the majors.
Obviously the book is still out on Kershaw, but methinks comparing him to Lincecum and saying you would trade Cain for him is high treason around these parts.
