Jake Peavy / Ben Sheets
Do you think there is any chance the Giants could explore entering the Jake Peavy sweepstakes? I hear that he is willing to waive his no-trade clause to come to SF but: 1) Do the giants have what it takes to bring him here (I was thinking an Aaron Rowand and Jonathan Sanchez offer)? and 2) Would the Padres be willing to trade within the division?
If that doesn't work out, do you think the Giants and Ben Sheets could work out a highly incentive, low base-salary, short year contract as a hold over for some of the prospects to season in the minors?

Nah (heh)
The Padres are not looking to take big contracts back for Peavy. Rowand is a non-starter.

1) Sure they have what it takes, but it’ll take probably 2/4 of our top 4 prospects plus some. Sanchez is not enough to get him, and Rowand at this point drags down his value, especially to the Padres who are looking to shed salary.
2) Sure, i they get the pieces.
I’d like to get Ben Sheets, but you’d probably have to put in vesting options for every year. Probably something along the lines of…
2nd year vests @ 100 IP
3rd year vests @ 175 IP
4th year vests @ 175 IP
And he’s probably going to demand a bit for those seasons. I’d rather have Randy Johnson on a one year deal. This really is the only deal I want to make this season.

I envision Sheets going to NYY if Pettitte doesn’t come calling back and accept $10m. Although I have heard (I think Buster Olney) say that they are now in the Tex sweepstakes. If that is true then they might or might not go for Sheets. Or they are putting their name in the Tex raffle to push the price higher for the Red Sox..

I can't believe..
The Yankees can make any more huge moves on the free agent market. They’re paying way too much already for players. although if I’m looking at it right they’re probably around last year’s payroll even with adding Burnett and Sabathia.

I believe they freed up ~$88m from expired contracts and also more will be freed up after 09. Plus they are tired of losing. I don’t see them signing Tex, just screwing with the Red Sox. I dont see why they couldn’t afford Sheets though.
I Don't Tolerate Intolerance!
by Giant among Angels on Dec 14, 2008 8:36 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, with CC and Burnett they’re about $15m below last year’s payroll and they’ve said that they don’t want to increase payroll. Sheets would be a reasonable signing, as would Lowe. Tex doesn’t really fit their financial structure. He’d fit in their lineup, sure (Jeter, Cano, Rodriguez, Posada, Cabrera, Damon, Swisher, Nady and Matsui), but their bigger problem is catcher.
by cornball on Dec 14, 2008 8:49 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
they already offered 10 million dollars to Andy Pettitte to come back for one year, and he’s thinking about it. If he comes back, the rotation is set, and they won’t be signing any more starters. CC, AJ, Wang, Pettitte and Joba. I would use Joba out of the bullpen again, but that’s not their plan.

Lots of money off the books
It’s true, the Yankees freed up about $88mil, as you said. Rough estimate on CC + Burnett is about $40mil/yr, which means they still have about $48mil to play with. That’s plenty to sign another top pitcher, Teixiera and hand out a contract equivalent to the one Ibanez just got (Mike Cameron, perhaps).
I don’t think they do all three. Believe it or not, some people are estimating a 10% drop in payroll for 2009 for the Yankees.

Peavy & Gonzales
I don’t think that there are many qualified suitors for Peavy. I’d be interested, but I’d insist on getting Adrain Gonzales too. I know the Angels tried this and were rebuffed, but given the ownership situation I’d stay close, and hope that the other potential trades continue to fall apart. As far as what we’d have to offer? Sanchez to begin with. I’d hate to part with him because I think he could grow into a spectacular number two, but you have to give value to get it. I’d also offer ISHI-K, either Henry Sosa or Kevin Pucetas, and at least one other maybe Buriss. The Giants don’t have to mave a great offer only the best available one. From what I understand the pool of competing teams is pretty narrow, and with the Paders ownership situation the preasure to cut payroll should only increase. If the Giants can’t get it done for something like this, I would not do it. I don’t want to give away the store.

Make it just Sosa and Ishikawa. Sosa is going to be the next Peavy (if not better) and Ishikawa will be just like Gonzalez except with better defense.

Angels have the prospects to get Peavy
and they may try to, if they miss out on Texeira.
Peavy would have to agree to go to them, an AL team.
The Giants, don’t have the goods to get him, as the Padres want a MLB ready SS and young MLB-ready starters. We just don’t have that to give away to a division rival who’s dug themselves into a huge PR/player personnel hole.

I Love Jake
Since his rookie season in SD, and would be thrilled if the Giants pursued him…..
However, giving up Rowand is dumb because let’s face it, he’s one of our best hitters and we can’t give that up right now since we struggle offensively.
I will trade for Peavy at the expense for some of our other pitchers, or young position players possibly still in the minors.
Although I’m skeptical of giving away Sanchez, i wouldnt mind packaging him with someone else for Jake
There are many options, but I was wondering the same thing…. Why havn’t the Giants pursued Peavy??/

I doubt they trade within the division
Mlbtraderumors.com had a report today that the Giants tried to trade for Khalil Greene before he was traded to the Cardinals. It’s pretty obvious that those talks didn’t get very far, or else we would have heard something previously. If the Padres preferred to ship a stiff like Greene out of their division, you know they won’t want to send the Giants a number one starter.
