Eric Chavez?
The other fanshot about Randy Winn's trade value got me thinking about whether the A's might want Winn, which led to wonder what type of piece we could get for him. First off, I don't know if OAK would want Winn, someone else who follows the A's more closely could probably tell me but here's how I see it:
-They likely see Jack Cust as a DH, because his LF defense is terrible and they've just brought in Matt Holliday, who would suffer defensively if forced to play RF.
-Ryan Sweeney is certainly in their plans, either playing CF or RF.
-Travis Buck is still around and could be the guy I suppose, but he obviously had his struggles last year
My guess is they are probably planning on Buck in RF next year, but assuming they don't, could a Winn-Chavez swap make some sense? Here's my logic:
1) This would bring the A's salary relief as Chavez is owed 26 million over the next two seasons (assuming you buy him out)
2) The A's are seemingly trying to win now, and Randy Winn could obviously help them in the OF on both sides of the ball
3) Chavez is clearly no longer the franchise player they viewed him as when they extended him, but the last 3 years prior to 2008 were still solid years for a 3B.
4) Defensively his stats were quite poor last year, I think that had more to do with injuries than anything, I still think he can perform as the elite defensive 3B he has always been.
5) The A's aren't too deep at 3B, but Hannahan is an exceptional defender and Jeff Baisley is a young 3B that could be adequate offensively.
I'm not exactly in love with the idea given how injuries have taken a toll on his career, but he's still only 30 years old and I think he could have some good years left in him. A healthy Eric Chavez is certainly better than Randy Winn (especially to a team in our situation). Yes, in this scenario the Giants take all the risk, but they also stand to a reap a greater reward.
Thoughts?

I think I’ll take my chances with Crede.

Why would the Giants trade Winn (maybe their best trade chip) for a broken down Eric Chavez when they can probably get the same player on the free agent market for less years and salary? And with the same injury risks!*
*His name is Joe Crede
/deer head
Bay City Ball
definitely think you overrate Crede
Crede’s wOBA* the past 5 years: .327, .262, .350, .320, .315,
Chavez: .317, .333, .353, .354, .402
Obviously Chavez doesn’t seem too likely to ever be the .400+ player he used to be, but could he reasonably be a .350+ player with great defense? I think there’s definitely a decent chance. Crede on the other hand is probably going to sit somewhere between a .315-.325
I also think Chavez has a higher defensive potential, regardless of last year. Still, he’s obviously a bigger risk than Crede, but there’s also much greater upside.
If the Giants were close to contending, maybe you can take the conservative route, but the truth is the Giants need to take risks and go with upside if they want any chance.
Obviously I think Beltre is a better option than Chavez at this point, but I think the cost for him might be too high for us
by NeifiChicken on Dec 12, 2008 11:58 AM PST up reply actions
I’m not overrating Crede, he is what he is. A plus-defender who has a below average bat. In order for Chavez to take advantage of his “higher defensive potential” he’ll have to, you know, actually play the field.
Still, the point is this: why trade Winn (maybe our best chip) or something that we can get on the market? Crede is sure to cost less money, less players in a trade, and his contract could be less than the two remaining years for Chavez.

Bay City Ball
as you pointed out earlier, the same thing goes for Crede injury wise. Both have been anything but healthy the past two years, so in either case we’re gambling on health.
Perhaps Winn wouldn’t need to be traded for Chavez, perhaps OAK would let him go for song to be rid of most of his salary.
by NeifiChicken on Dec 12, 2008 12:36 PM PST up reply actions
if you’re going to gamble on health I would rather gamble 1 year/$5 million for Crede than 2 years/$26 million for Eric Chavez.

From my observations of the A’s over the past couple of years, I have a nagging feeling that Chavvy is done. We’d be screwed the second he opens a candy bar and breaks his femur.
His split stats are pretty bad as well. He gets pwn’d by lefties.

Great, thanks.
Now I can’t stop thinking about Eric Chavez.
"When Jackson Williams thinks of how many times Madison Bumgarner has tried to kill Tyler Walker..." Well, apparently he succeeded on that last go 'round.
Computer says ..." NNnnnaaahhh."
I still entertain ideas of the Giants making a free agency run at Beltre next winter. Wiggington is a free agent as well and with out the health risks. I get the feeling with Chavez in 2010 there would be no chance the front office would even explore those route.

The bases were drunk, and I painted the black with my best yakker. But blue squeezed me, and I went full. I came back with my heater, but the stick flares one the other way and the chalk flies for two bases. Three earnies! Next thing I know, skipper hooks me and I'm sipping suds with the clubby.
I will happily accept what that dude in the picture is rejecting, and please do it now before my wife gets home from work!!

Nah.
A’s have too many outfielders already and the Giants don’t need an almost always broken 3B.

If, for some reason, you really wanted Eric Chavez, a guy that has played 113 games the last 2 years combined, I’m sure the A’s would be thrilled to just let you have him and the pleasure of paying him $26 million the next two years. You sure as hell wouldn’t have to give up something of actual value like Randy Winn.

Yes to Dave Roberts and a crappy prospect. No to Randy.

6 million AND a prospect for 24 million? I’m pretty sure Beane would do that too…

I wouldn’t want Eric Chavez and his $26 million contract if they posted an ad in the free section on craigslist and were literally giving him away. I wouldn’t even want to take on his 2 years/$26 million in exchange for freeing ourselves of Roberts 1 year/$6.5 million

Makes no sense whatsoever for the A's
Unless they’re planning on moving Randy Winn to third base, that is…
I mean, shit, have you seen the alternatives? Jack Hannahan? I mean, come on. I’d rather take a shot at Chavez being healthy than lock in a guaranteed underperformer at third. Jeff Baisley? I suppose they could sign Ty Wigginton, but he’s a horrible defender at third.
And while Winn is probably a short-term upgrade on Ryan Sweeney, it looks like the A’s are committed to Sweeney long-term, so they’ll want him to get consistent at-bats.
Your 2008 Athletics: It's Nothing Personal.
Sfunny, seems to me that it makes sense for both. We need a third baseman and they need to dump salary. (I’m thinking of the Dave Roberts version of the deal.)
If the A’s don’t want Hannahan, I’ll take him. He’s a younger, slightly better version of Pedro Feliz who isn’t even arb-eligible yet.
I agree
Assuming that by “slightly better” you mean “much worse”.
..so allow me to present Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain as two sweet, sweet bottles of warming hooch.
Still playing the part of zenbitz, I see. Pedro’s three-year wOBA is .303; Hannahan’s is .302. This is before park and league adjustments (at least I think it is; I can never tell with fangraphs), which should be worth 5-8 runs for Hannahan. Pedro’s around +17 on defense; Hannahan is +11.
I concede there’s no real evidence that Hannahan is better. It looks to me like they’re exactly the same. But Hannahan is younger and cheaper.
You can get park-adjusted wOBA at StatCorner, but it doesn’t cahnge much – they’re very similar hitters, but Feliz is better defensively. Though Feliz was definitely a much better player than Hannahan is now when he was Hannahan’s age. He was actually a pretty good hitter for a couple of years.

are you serious PaulThomas?
just not having to sink $26 million in Chavez the next two years makes a whole hell of a lot of sense for the A’s (or for any other team). If you can also get a good defensive OF with OBPs of .363 and .353 the last two years, how the hell does than not make sense? This would really really not make sense for the Giants.
by FluLikeSymptoms on Dec 13, 2008 4:59 PM PST up reply actions
so take all of that money you save not paying Chavez to be on the DL and sign a 3B. I would gladly sit all of their non-Holliday OFs in favor of Randy Winn
by FluLikeSymptoms on Dec 13, 2008 5:16 PM PST up reply actions
WHAT third baseman?
Again, Wigginton? You’ve got to be kidding me. He’s horrible defensively at third, probably not even a league average player there.
Winn doesn’t really project as a better player than Travis Buck or Aaron Cunningham going forward, and his short-term upgrade is more than canceled out by the loss of any chance at better than fringe-average play at third base. I suppose if they could make it a three-team deal and flip him for Troy Glaus or something, I might be OK with it…
Your 2008 Athletics: It's Nothing Personal.
Joe Crede
but then you’ve got another bad-back 3B and one who’s a worse hitter than Chavez
btw, Nate Schierholtz can play third
Adopted Giant: Aaron King
Wearing the crown by 2011. Or at least the LOOGY hat
well, you could pay Wigginton $3 million to play or you can pay Chavez $13 million to be on the DL and have Hanahan play.
Travis Buck is a 4th OF, he will be out of baseball before Winn.
by FluLikeSymptoms on Dec 14, 2008 10:56 AM PST up reply actions
Buck is still young and just had a bad season…. growing pains, ya know? He’ll be better going forward and better than Winn after next season.
Plus Wiggy’s going to have multiple suitors and will certainly cost more than $3mil

I don’t think Travis Buck is any good at all. But hey, I’ve been wrong before.
