OT: Fantasy Basketball advice

Alright, this might seem stupid on McC, but since all the posts recently have been about Sabathia, hot stove, angry Sabean, etc. I thought I'd change the subject to the sport of basketball (I refuse to discuss it on GSoM since I don't like that blog).

I am in a fantasy keeper league where at the end of each year we get to keep 4 players. Currently my keepers are Chris Paul, Chris Bosh, KEvin Durant, and Greg Oden.   I have been offered a trade of Rudy Gay, Michael BEasley, and Richard Jefferson for Chris Bosh and Raymond Felton.

What should I do? My league's categories are all the standards categories, except we add Personal Fouls.

Does it help me now? Long term?

I would say no. If you accept you are going to have to drop another player. Your team may be a bit better this year but I would prefer Bosh over any of the other players as a keeper.

that's the key hangup for me

but I do love me some Rudy Gay. I think his multi category potential is phenomenal (much like Kevin Durant).

I know Bosh is a great player, but I think

he has been slightly overperforming thus far, whereas Rudy has been underperforming. Unless you have a lot of solid players, and you can’t afford to drop one, I would take it just because Rudy Gay and Michael Beasely can only get better as the season progresses.

Keep Bosh

I like Gay now and Beasley’s potential, but I don’t see either having the a peak as high as Bosh. Fantasy hoop league are won by your studs, with limited keepers you can’t let a borderline top 10 guy go in his prime. Don’t underestimate the value Bosh gives you in the percentage categories. His FT% in particular is huge from your big man.

Gay's Potential

What do you see it as?

I love his fantasy game because he can be well over 1-1-1 in 3’s-steals-blocks. I even think it’s reasonable for him to be 1.5-1.5-1.5

Couple it with decent percentages, and lots of scoring and I think he’s a top 20 player easily very soon, maybe even top 10 potential.

Aside from that, the added bonus I see is that it gives me two potential keepers in Beasley and Gay. Oden is my 4th keeper now, but if he doesn’t show more progress by the end of the year, I might keep someone else. I also have Ellis as an option, but who knows how good he’ll be coming off his injury.

Gay & Beasley

I don’t think you get 1.5s across the board, but the 1,1,1 can’t be discounted. With Gay you are always going to take a hit in FG% because he shoots a lot of jumpers. Gay is a fringe top 20 player now, clearly no Bosh. You also have a similar player with Durant as a sure keeper. I guess the answer for you is going to come down to what you expect from Beasley since I think it is safe to assume we agree Bosh>>>>Gay. In my mind Beasley is a Carmelo type, i.e. better basketball player than fantasy player. I think it’s 3-4 years before he’s a legit top 30 fantasy player, which means carrying him as a keeper over better short term options for a while.

Is your league head-to-head or roto?

head to head, but as I said, unless Greg Oden appears unkeepable, I’d probably look to sell off Beasley this year to someone in need of a keeper

Then it really boils down to Bosh vs. Gay. If both were on your team and you could only keep one who would it be? For me the answer is easy because Bosh is the rare big man that shoots good free throws. Teamed with Chris Paul it will be easy to build a team around good percentages and the PG/PF theory.

Think Like a GM

The old adage is you don’t trade big for small, so you certainly wouldn’t trade a ‘stud’ big like Bosh for some (to paraphrase Hubie Brown) high upside swingmen. Bosh singlehandedly beat my team this past week on the last day of the matchup.

my question

head to head league
I have-Bibby, Devin Harris, Monta, Crawford, Granger, Gay, Jamison, AK47, Kenyon Martin, Love, ‘Sheed, Biedrins, D-Howard
so I punt FT% every week but I’m all but guaranteed to win blocks, boards, and points. I’d like to deal Crawford or Sheed because theyre keeping me from winning FG% every week. But if I give up both I lose too many 3’s? any thoughts on trade targets?

What category would you want to improve

If you are in an 8 category league your team is probably also winning 3s most weeks also giving you four categories you are strong in. The thing to consider is can you grab control of a fifth category without sacrificing the prior four. Losing Sheed would hurt you in blocks and 3s, Crawford in 3s and assists. The categories you are probably on the fence in are FG, Assists, and steals. I would try to upgrade two of those categories in any trade. Trading Sheed for an Andre Miller type would help your assists and steals, but can you afford the loss in 3s and blocks? Crawford for someone like Andre Igouldala who is underachieving might make sense as it would help in FG and Steals as well give you some upside potential.

Remember that it is pretty easy to find 3s on the waiver wire. You can probably cut Love and add a Quentin Richardson type player and not lose any ground in 3s.

yea,its a nine category league and I actually offered Crawford for Iggy with that exact strategy in mind a few days ago but was turned down. I can certainly afford to dump Sheed’s blocks. Crawford’s 3’s may be a little harder to swallow, but I figure if I can maybe be the first to jump on Arenas when I get Monta back or something. Crawford has actually been making a lot fewer 3’s since his move out here anyway. I’ll look into that Miller trade not a bad idea. I also tried to land Rondo to beef up stls and assists, but his owner wasnt budging on a Crawford based deal. Thanks for the ideas.

What is tough about this

Is if you keep paul/gay/durant/beasley, you are fishing for a C every year, and don’t have any blocks, will be hard to build on if most people keep their 20/10/2 C types. I think the trade is very tough, and would not fault you for either side, but think that the lack of C could hurt you in the long run.

by acmastrpiece on Dec 11, 2008 11:59 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Greg Oden

That’s why I’d probably keep Greg Oden. Bosh does have C eligibility, but he doesn’t exactly bring the blocks either (averaging 0.8 this year, which is less than Gay)

by NeifiChicken on Dec 12, 2008 12:01 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I'd probably do it.

A lot of this has been said, but here’s my take:

You’re effectively selling high on Bosh and buying low on Gay IMO. That would be enough to pull the trigger in my mind. Looking at the big picture, you’ll now have 5-6 players to consider when keepers are chosen next season, whereas now you’re sorta locked in to the four you already have it sounds like.

You get a lot of quality that will help the rest of this year, and you’ll have more choices come the end of the year. Your only loss is the value you (possibly?) lose keeping Gay over Bosh next season. The upgrade you get for this year outweighs that potential negative in my mind. And hey, your goal is to win the league, not to try and get the four best keepers. This should assist your team in a title run.
