Sorry to hear this bad news. Gives other relievers a chance to make the bullpen.

Suh-ucks

Merkin Valdez is the definition of the word tantalizing. Really exciting, and always just out of reach.

Unfortunate. Valdez and Lowry are both in the same “surprise” boat: don’t bank on them for anything, but any contribution from either would be splendid.

Was anyone expecting him to really throw 40+ innings next year?

disgusting

nice that Valdez gets a mention on the merkin wiki page

by FluLikeSymptoms on Dec 11, 2008 4:00 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I love this quote from his Wiki:

Valdez has a mid-90s fastball that can be sustained throughout a start. He also boasts a decent changeup and rarely allows home runs. He tries to add a curveball and slider into the mix, but they’re below average. His mechanics raised a red flag for possible injuries, and as a result, he was converted to a bullpen role. This did not prevent him from becoming injured.

“Merkin’s iffy,” Giants general manager Brian Sabean said Thursday, the final day of the winter meetings.

I’m trying to come up with an appropriate adjective or phrase to describe the potential of Merkin being a contributing member of the Giants’ pitching staff this year. “Iffy” seems a shade optimistic from where I sit. Merkin is “iffy”, like me having Tommy Lasorda over for to my house for dinner is “iffy”.

Why couldn't McCovey have hit the ball just three feet higher??
