I Can't Stop Thinking About Adrian Gonzalez
The Jake Peavy deal with the Cubs seems to be falling apart if not already fallen apart. The Padres desperately seem to want to trade him to cut payroll. The Padres are now clearly in a rebuild phase that is going to take many years before they return to being competative. In this environment is there really any point in the Padres holding onto Adrian Gonzalez?
Clearly the Padres are not going to just give away Jake Peavy and Adrian Gonzalez. They are also likely to want more to agree to make a trade within the NL West. All that said is there now an opening for the Giants? Do we have the trade chips to get both Peavy and Gonzalez? If we do would it make sense to pull the trigger?
I think we do have the chips and a trade could be put togeather that would benifit both the Giants and the Padres. Here are the pieces that I see that would interest the Padres:
Jonathan Sanchez and Travis Ishikawa - Cheap Immediate Major League Replacements
Madison Bumgardner and Angel Villalona - Long Term Replacements
Nate Schierholtz - NL West Sweetner

The Fanpost title is really funny to me. Anyway, even if they Padres were going to trade Gonzalez, I highly doubt that they would trade him within the division. I certainly wouldn’t want to give up any of our top prospects for him.
I don't think they care where they trade him to
the issue of whether they want to trade him at all is the question. It does make some sense, given Kyle Blanks presence, but he just isn’t the same salary burden.
Still, I’d agree with you about not wanting to give up our top guys, because the cost will be Alderson, Sanchez, Noonan, Lewis, Henry Sosa, Joey Martinez…..or something along those lines anyway

Are you suggesting all five of those players? That’s a lot to give up
Matt Cain: He'll save children, but not the Dodger children.
PABLO SANDOVAL AM STEAL DEATH, DESTROYER OF WORLDS.
For Gonzalez and Peavy
The way I read it, he’s suggesting:
Jonathan Sanchez, Travis Ishikawa, Madison Bumgardner, Angel Villalona, and Nate Schierholtz in exchange for Peavy and Gonzalez.
While I might be able to be convinced that is a fair trade, I’m totally uninterested in it, because I think that there’s a good possibility those 5 guys churn out at least two stars on the level of Peavy and Gonzalez, and there’s no reason for us to be trading the future for the present.
¿Julio is tourist in San Francisco? Harper's Bizarre!
Peavy is 27 yrs old and under contract thru the next 4 yrs/$52MM or 5yrs/$78MM
Gonzalez is 26 yrs old and under contract thru next 3 yrs 09:$3M, 10:$4.75M, 11:$5.5M club option (no buyout)
MadBum and AnVIl are both under 20
And their names are better.
¿Julio is tourist in San Francisco? Harper's Bizarre!
Correction on Peavy’s contract numbes:
09:$8M club option 10:$15M, 11:$16M, 12:$17M, 13:$22M club option ($4M buyout)
which would be 4yrs/$60MM or 5yrs/78MM
Another Correction - Peavy Gets $11M (not $8M) in 09
You missed the following when looking at Cot’s:
“2009 salary increases to $11M with Cy Young during 2005-07”
Therefore it would be 4Yrs/$63M or 5 Yrs/$81M

I think that there’s a good possibility those 5 guys churn out at least two stars on the level of Peavy and Gonzalez
Really? A good possibility? I’d put Nate’s and Ishikawa’s chances of becoming stars at 0.7%, so basically you think that there’s a good chance that at least two out of MadBum, Villalona, and Sanchez turn into stars? That’s a tad optimistic, don’t you think?

I'm not sold on Ishikawa
But Nate Schierholtz could turn into a great player for us. I’m not saying he would necesarilly become a “star”, but I still think he’s capable of being a perennial .280-310 hitter with plenty of RBIs.

I logged in to post the same thing. I think that’s a big underestimation of Nate’s skills. I think the guy could turn into a .300/.360/.500 guy for us. That’s nothing to sneeze at.

This makes no sense. You’re way over fetishising the future, and over fetishising young players. If the Giants get Peavy and Gonzalez, they would probably be the favourites in the NL West for the next several years.

Some teams can afford to give up four or five of their top young players for a single player, like the Dbacks trade for Dan Haren. We can’t. We aren’t an Adrian Gonzalez away from the postseason, and if we trade Sanchez and Bumgarner, we take a step back for the future, too.
We Get Two (Peavy and Gonzalez) Not Just One
And I think the following team would be a post season team:
Rotation: Lincecum, Peavy, Cain, Zito, Lowry/Misch
Lineup: Winn, Renteria, Lewis, Gonzalez, Sandoval, Molina, Rowand, Frandsen/Burriss/Velez
Bullpen: Wilson, Howry, Romo, Affeldt, Taschner/Hinshaw, Valdez/Miller/Sadler/Matos, Yabu
Bench: Holm, Phelps, Roberts/Bowker, Other 2 of Frandsen/Burriss/Velez
by giantsrainman on Dec 11, 2008 12:28 PM PST up reply actions
like the title, but not the idea
SD isnt going to deal those two within the division.
-Misch is terrible.
-Lowry isnt a sure thing to be ready at the start of the season
Then you lose:
Bumgardner, a future front line pitcher
AnVil projected as being a above average talent w/ power
Schierholtz, who has produced every year so far but hasnt got the look he deserves
Ishikawa, whoi seems to have found his stroke.

I try and swing this trade..
If Bumgarner can instead by Alderson and if we sign RJ. In that case..we’ve got quite a good chance at taking the division.

by giantsrainman on Dec 11, 2008 2:06 PM PST up reply actions
I don’t think I would. The Giants have one of the best farm systems in the game, but that’s because their top four prospects are in the top 25-50 in baseball. Getting rid of three of the four is too much of a hit, especially when I doubt that Peavy/Gonzalez turn the Giants into an automatic contender.
It’s close, though… If Peavy were a little cheaper, I would think about it. But if he blows up, which is somewhat likely, the Giants would really, really, really be screwed.
by Grant Brisbee on Dec 11, 2008 2:20 PM PST up reply actions

I would love to get Gonzalez, but the guy’s making $3 million in 2009 and $4.75 million in 2010. He’s one of the biggest bargains in the majors (if not THE biggest) given his production. If the Padres can’t afford to keep him, they may as well apply for a federal bailout right now.

If this deal is for both Gonzalez and Peavy then the Giants should complete this deal. Both teams get what they are looking for. Giants get ML talent and the Padres get top prospects and salary relief.

i think it was sort of an amoeba splitting thing and happened at the same time. Two guys went to FYC and two guys went to GP.
The bigger stars (Dave and Ranking Roger) went to GP.
On a side note, Dave still tours as “English Beat” and is freakin’ awesome. He’s still sounds great although doesn’t try to hit all the high notes on “I Confess”. He hangs out and has drinks with the audience during intermission and hangs out afterward to chat, sign autographs pose for pictures with the audience. (I came away with an autographed set list.)

I’ve seen the newest incarnation of the English Beat three times, and although I enjoyed the shows immensely, when Dave Wakeling is the only guy there from the original group you shouldn’t really call yourself the English Beat. Then again, if he toured with the original guys he probably wouldn’t do his General Public hits, which would take away from the show. VH1 did a Bands Reunited show with the orginal members a few years ago, but they couldn’t get them onstage because the two in Fine Young Cannibals wouldn’t return their phone calls.
Brian Sabean's new dad: Firm believer in corporal punishment
they weren’t the same guys. Dave Wakeling and Ranking Roger left the English Beat to become General Public. The rest of the group was just discarded. Rather than go on employment, the two guitarists, Dave Cox and Dave Steele seeked out old friend Roland Gift to form Fine Young Cannibals. I always tell my wife that I’m the king of useless information, and here I am proving it once again.

As a counter-argument, Dave founded the band. wrote all their original songs and sang lead on all but a couple of them. I don’t begrudge him calling his band “The English Beat”. If one person is the primary creative force behind the band, it’s acceptable in my book. It’s comparable to Billy Corgan finding new bandmates and still calling himself “Smashing Pumpkins”.
When I saw him earlier in the year, the only General Public songs he player were Burning Bright and Tenderness. I was hoping he’d play Hot You’re Cool.
My adopted Giant: "Raptor Jesus" Guzman
He did it in New York, because OMG he was in the Big Apple!! He also did the song, General Public. I have to admit all the shows were great. One of the tours he had Lynval Golding of the Specials and Pauline of The Selecter in his band, and they did some of their songs as well as his own. On another, he had The Fixx and The Alarm opening for him. Next month he’s coming again and Bad Manners is the opening act. The only thing I really blame him for is the way he broke up the original English Beat. From what I heard, he just told Ranking Roger he was leaving and gave him the choice of going with him. The rest of the group didn’t know anything until a few days later when their accountant called them with the news. Pretty shitty way of leaving a band.
Brian Sabean's dad- will make a few phone calls to help his son find a new job after next season
Opening acts? Holy Cow! We saw him at the Little Fox in Redwood City. Couldn’t have been more than a 150-200 people in there. Tiny venue with nothing but a two-foot high stage and a dance floor. Easily the most intimate performance of a “big name” musician I’ve ever been to. Incredible fun; felt like a party and he was playing in someone’s living room.
My adopted Giant: "Raptor Jesus" Guzman
First time I saw him it was a little place as well, the Canal Room. He was able to shake everyone’s hand. Since then, he’s played only bigger places when he came to New York, like BB King’s and Irving Plaza. (now called the Fillmore for some reason) Those are big places yet he seems to pack them pretty good. I enjoyed the intimate concert as well, but it sort of made me feel sad that his career was reduced to playing places like that. The fact that he’s packing the bigger places now and they keep asking him back for more shows makes me happy for him.
Brian Sabean's dad- will make a few phone calls to help his son find a new job after next season
I think it’s as much a matter of loving to play, so he plays lots and lots of gigs, regardless of the size. I check out his tour schedule pretty regularly and it seems like he has a gig every other night. I also noticed he plays a lot of private parties.
After seeing him in the small venue and being able dance four feet from where he was playing, seeing him in a big hall wouldn’t be as much fun.
My adopted Giant: "Raptor Jesus" Guzman
Jimmy Chamberlain is still in (or back in) Smashing Pumpkins. I think I agree with you about Billy still calling his band that but certainly not Axl Rose still calling his band Guns n’ Roses.
Speed, defense... and an almost fanatical devotion to getting picked off.
I'd make that trade
I’d hate losing those players, but yeah, I think they’d have to do that deal.
No way the Padres do it. I live in SD, and right now fan enthusiasm is abysmal coming off last year+Hoffman leaving+Peavy trade talk. If they also traded their best player (by far) who’s young affordable, and a local guy, they might not sell a ticket next year. At least not for 18 year old prospects, no matter how good they are.
if a trade of adrian and peavy goes down
i believe the only padres making over a million would be giles ($9M) and young ($4.5M); that payroll would be retardedly low. i wonder who would be the face of that franchise?

Maybe The Padres Would Consider Trading Adrian Gonzalez Too
“Towers told the Padres’ flagship radio station, 1090-AM, that the Angels expressed interest in acquiring both Peavy and first baseman Adrian Gonzalez. The Padres were intrigued to know what the Angels would offer in return for the two, but Towers said it didn’t go that far. Padres CEO Sandy Alderson has said the Padres will retain Gonzalez at least until the 2009 season and have no plans to deal him.
