The above link of the drafted players gives a link the the minor league stats on this right handed pitcher. We'll see if he's good enough to stay on the 25 man roster. This also means our now full-up 40 man roster must have a player removed. Does that need to happen by the end of the day?

Seems an interesting pick. I was of the impression that we had 39 players on our roster so don’t need to remove a player (unless of course we want to add someone else at a later date)

Dissapointing that Ben Copeland was selected by the A’s with their selection. We’ll have to see if he sticks on their team all year.

Looks like Perdomo is a 24 year old power pitcher with a plus olus fastball, a slider with great movement, and a “meh” changeup. He has good strikeout number, fanning over a hitter per inning. Evidently he has control issues (like most of our relief prospects). He profiles as a middle inning reliever; maybe the Giants think that he the type of guy who can stick.

39 players -- correct

I miscounted on the sfgiants.com page. Well, does this prevent the Big Ugly from being signed? I still think another player will need to be tossed from the 40 player list, and we all can guess another is gone if Phelps makes the team.

Now that Renteria has signed, Ochoa could be battling Roberts for that last life jacket.

by nelson95 on Dec 11, 2008 11:14 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I think there are several guys that would be released before Roberts. If you are going pay somebody $6.5 million they might as well stay with the club all year (if only to carry Lincecum’s bags so he doesn’t hurt his elbow)

by FluLikeSymptoms on Dec 11, 2008 11:17 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I think Yabu and Holm could clear waivers

I agree with you on Roberts. They will keep him at least until the end of spring training where he might be released like Steve Kline did last year.

I don't know what it is, but I see something in Holm

If I see it maybe another GM sees it too.

If you are going to pay somebody $6.5 million

See the definition of “sunk cost”.

Roberts is pretty much limited to left field and a pinch runner duties. He has no chance of earning type "b" free agent status. In Left field Lewis blocks him so should Winn or Nate. Pinch running there is Velez and Nate. Or Ochoa.

Leave El Ocho(a) alone!!

Seriously though Ochoa can play MLB level "d" at SS and second. Something to consider if Burriss is getting regular play time in Fresno and if Renteria glove starts to become a larger hazard then expected.

by daveinexile on Dec 11, 2008 11:38 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

yeah, it all depends on what happens with Burriss. If they given him a year in AAA (as I hope they will) the MLB team needs Ochoa. If Burriss makes the MLB team, Ochoa is useless.

by FluLikeSymptoms on Dec 11, 2008 11:47 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

mostly agreed

It is possible Frandsen ends up playing 3rd a lot ( say injuries or ineffectiveness force force Pablo to play else were) or the Frandsen/Velez experiment ends up producing a billowing tire fire Benitiez proportions. He provides some insurance against a lot of possible bad things tell the infield shakes itself out.

I have always maintainted he should not block an upgrade in talent. In this case I think there are others that bring less to the 2009 & 2010 40 man roster.

All the info I could find on him is this…apparently we just picked up a 37 year old Venezuelan

But seriously, this is most definitely a low risk move…would’ve loved Veal to slip to us though…

Copeland seems like he was redundant in our levels with guys like Horwitz, McBride, Timpner, Mooney etc…Giants seem to love those powerless outfielders…

wasn’t he also the AA batting champion?? I know he was a little old for that level, but combine the minor league performance with the winter league performance and then throw in the fact that he’s a third baseman who can also play second, and you can’t help but think he has a good chance of contributing to the big league team eventually.

Giants lose Sarmiento and Haines

The Rangers took catcher Elio Sarmiento and the Phillies took second baseman Kyle Haines from us. I didn’t think either one of these guys were very strong prospects.

Pitchers vs. Hitters

What’s interesting is that the Giants system is known to be strong in pitching and weak in hitting. What happens? The Giants take two pitchers and lose three hitters.

Si

All two of us. Want the kid to get healthy and perform well. If he can do that then at minimum he is a valuable trading chip for the Giants.

by wilriv21 on Dec 11, 2008 11:16 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

valuable trading chip?

teams just had a chance to get him for nothing and they passed. You think they are going to give up something to get him?

by FluLikeSymptoms on Dec 11, 2008 11:18 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

At the present time, No. But as I write if the kid gets healthy and performs as well as he has done in the past he become a top prospect once again. The 2009 season is a make or break season for EME. At one time EME was not just a top prospect but an elite hitting prospect. The reason he lost that status had to do with his health and not his ability.

by wilriv21 on Dec 11, 2008 11:26 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I think it’s probably more correct to say that if he gets healthy and performs well again he can become an actual prospect once again. The ship has sailed on him being considered a “top prospect.”

He may be able to regain his lost status this year, but there’s no way he was a reasonable bet to stick in the majors all year.

by FluLikeSymptoms on Dec 11, 2008 2:58 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

From BaseballAmerica.com

Another noteworthy pickup was righthander Luis Perdomo, taken sixth overall by the Giants. Perdomo was acquired by St. Louis in the late July trade that sent one-time World Series hero Anthony Reyes to the Indians. Perdomo was 7-3, 2.36 with 82 strikeouts and 30 walks in 72 innings combined at high Class A Kinston, Double-A Akron and Double-A Springfield.
