CC's Opt-out Clause (Keeping the Dream Alive)
So lets assume that the Yankees don't win the 2009, 2010, and 2011 World Series. By that time the entirety of Yankee Nation will be looking to BBQ CC and CC and the wifey very well could be looking for much greener pastures (heh - grazing). Since the Winter Meetings are drawing to a close and all this rampant speculation on steroids is slowing down a bit, would anyone care to look into their decoder ring, crystal ball, or their last warm swig of Olde English and take a stab at where CC signs after he opts out from the Yankee deal?
-- Sign with the Giants?
-- make another deal with the Devil and sign with the Bums?
-- join Teixeira on the defending World Champion Nationals?
-- or opt out and renegotiate with the 3 time defending WS Champion Yanks?
and just what about this Opt Out Clause anyway? Paranoia theory: Players Union demanded he take the record deal and suck it up 3 years for the good of the union until he opts out and THEN can go play where he actually prefers. Sneaky union.
This is my first fanpost and I'm sure I've made greivous errors in design and format, please be gentle. As far as conent goes -> this is quality BS I just cooked, so enjoy!
Per ESPN : http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3759182
Sources told Olney that, to get the deal completed, the Yankees added a seventh year to their original six-year, $140 million offer, bringing the total package to seven years and $161 million -- at $23 million a season, by far the biggest contract for any pitcher in history. He also confirmed that Sabathia can opt out of the deal after three years -- addressing his concerns about living in New York with his wife and children.

My Thoughts
I think CC is really fucking himself with this opt out clause. I don’t think any pitcher can live up to a 160 million dollar contract, unless he wins cy youngs each season, or gets insanely close. I think you have to be pretty legendary to live up to that contract. Hence the Yankees fans are going to be booing the shit out of him. Come three years he might just buckle under the pressure and opt out even if there is no better deal available.

I sincerely doubt it
Players don’t skip out on $90 million because their feelings are hurt.
If he got a competitive offer from a West Coast team, maybe…

however, you can’t get another offer until you actually opt out. He’d have to risk that huge contract to do this.

I really don't see it
How can adding a 4 year, $100 million (or however much it is) option to a contract make it worse?
If he opts out, then it’s probably the right decision for him. If not, then that’s probably the right decision for him.

I see the opt out as a much bigger problem for the club. The only way CC stays is if it’s in his best interest to. Do you really think Zito is going to use his opt out?

Zito has an opt out?

According to Cot’s:
if 2014 option vests, Zito may opt out & receive $3.5M buyout
This part made me LOL:
Award bonuses:
Cy Young award: $0.5M for winning once, $0.75M for 2nd time, $1M each for 3 or more ($0.2M for placing 2nd in vote, $0.15M for 3rd, $0.1M for 4th, $50,000 for 5th)
MVP: $0.25M for winning, $0.15M for 2nd place in vote, $0.1M for 3rd, $75,000 for 4th, $50,000 for 5th
$0.2M for WS MVP
$0.1M each for Gold Glove, All Star selection, LCS MVP

Reading Zito’s contract is pure comedy. At least he won’t be hitting any of those MVP or CYA bonuses. He’s practically saving us money!

Will we still want him or have room for him in three years though? By then, Alderson, MadBum and others will probably be up in the majors.

good points, and there is absolutely no telling where Cain, Lincecum, and Dirty are three years from now too. Of course, we all know where Zito will be in 3 years time. And I don’t mean deer hunting with the other Barry

I think the opt out clause was added because of his desire to play on the west coast. If he really hates it in New York he will opt out and take less money to play in a place where he and his family would be happier. Thinking he will sign with the Giants at that time is a dream though. In three years, guys like Bumgarner and Alderson will be here. We needed Sabathia now, not in three years.

I agree. It was very shrewed for him to get that opt out close. It’s a built in do-over if he doesn’t like it there.

Well, one never knows what one needs in three years.

He will only opt out if he thinks it will pay
can you imagine what a team will have to pony up a year to make that happen? I agree with beagle that no pitcher can live up to a contract like this… therefore, he won’t opt out. So the real point is don’t get your hopes up on this line of thinking!

As said above, it might be about more than money if opts out.

The Yankees are taking on a ton of risk with this contract. If CC pitches well, he opts out in 3 years and gets a bigger contract in a (likely) less depressed market. If he pitches poorly, or gets hurt, then he’ll just collect his monies.
So, best case scenario is they get a great pitcher for 3/69. That’s pretty good, but there are a lot of ways this can go bad and CC has all the control.

This is right
If he’s good, there’s almost no way he can’t get more than $23/per in three years. That’s a very, very reasonable deal for a pitcher like CC has been — in fact, he’s been worth something like $35 million each of the past two years. But we all know how much suck he can become and stick the Yankees with the whole thing. Jack McDowell seems like a good comp.
