I agree with Sabean here. Looking back at some of the posts on Baggs’ blog, Sabean was consistently saying that it was unlikely that the Giants would go after the big name free agents like CC, Tex or Manny. But there was still a lot more buzz that CC would sign with us, when there was never an offer and never a meeting. After all that the Yanks’ negotiated against themselves and added an extra year an extra $20M.

I think that CC and his people used the media and played the Yanks, forcing them to up the ante, when they were the only ones in contention all along.

Meanwhile, a bunch of fans who hear “Giants trying to sign CC” now think he’s the one that got away and are pissed at Sabes for it, when we never even seriously trying to sign him because it would be unaffordable – we already have our $120M+ pitcher.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t like Sabean much, but it isn’t his fault we didn’t sign CC.

THIS

let’s face it, if sabes were even a serviceable GM, we would not have ZITO’s AMAZING COCKBLOCKING CONTRACT.

The dismal state of this team (especially the offense) is nobody’s fault but Sabes. This isn’t the Gov’t. where the executive branch can blame the legislature. Sabes is the General Manager, and generally, he doesn’t manage.

Besides, confusion on a ship is nothing to fear. it should be taken advantage of. Lest you forget we are a ship of war, designed for battle. you don’t just fight battles when things are hunky dory.

Were I one of those fans who were clamoring for Sabathia.

I’d be more pissed if the Giants never seriously considered pursuing Sabathia than if they tried to get him and simply decided that 161M and 7 years was just completely batsh1t crazy.

That said, I didn’t want them to signing Sabathia for any remotely realistic contract, and I’m glad they didn’t.

the Yanks made a pretty big offer early on (6/$140M) and that probably was enough for the Giants to start looking elsewhere. Sabean said they wouldn’t have gone higher than 5 years, which probably means there was some communication, but it was clear that the longer deal was preferred. Obviously, CC got the Yanks to give him 7 years, which means the Giants were probably just used as leverage against the Yanks to get more years and money.

It is weird saying this, but I agree with Sabes. I dont know why everyone got this perception that we were going to be big spenders this season, it was stated repeatedly that we wouldnt be going after any of the “big guns”. On a side not, I dont see why everyone calling into KNBR and such are so angry that we arent going after Manny or Tex, do people really think that by getting Manny this team will become World Series contenders. I am amazed how some of the “fans” out there dropped their gung ho rebuilding attitude so soon.

by sfgiants114 on Dec 10, 2008 9:28 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

I don’t think that most fans were that into rebuilding. They want instant gratification regardless of the price. They have no idea how to run a franchise or what the team’s budget is. They think they can make up for a bad Zito signing and Bonds leaving by spending all this money on big name free agents. It isn’t their money after all.

I have to admit, Baggarly was the one who really started making me believe the GIants could sign CC, way back a couple of weeks ago. He brought up the Comcast deal and the redevelopment plan as revenue streams and I totally bought it.

From what I’ve heard the redevelopment plan is on hold, something about the economy being a little off… and there’s some problem with real estate loans, just some rumor I suppose.

Every single day we would read reports about how CC could soon become a Giant, and everytime Sabean spoke to the media he shot it down… And yet the rumor hounding continued.

Sabean has no plan and needs to grow up

I will reiterate some of the things I wrote on Baggarly’s blog:

Sabean needs to grow up. How much does Sabean earn every year? $2-$3 million? He can’t take the pressure and criticism for that much cash? The whole reason that he works in an industry that can support such exorbitant salaries for not only players but front office workers IS because fans are so fanatic. We are willing to support a field full of prima-donnas because we love the game and want to see it played at a high level. We are willing to pay ridiculous prices to see a game and buy a bunch of merchandise crap, this subsidizing his and his players way of life. He needs to be able to take the criticism and the pressure or go to grad school and get a real job.

He has no plan. Regardless of how the season pans out, he has non-prospects (I don’t believe that Sandoval was considered a high prospect until recently – and I argue that assertion is debatable) at three of the four infield positions and an overpaid and past-their-prime CF and SS. The cleanup hitter? That guys hit 16 HRs last year. Winn and Lewis are the lone bright spots on offense, but neither have much power, and Winn is 35. He has a good pitching staff, but one that is anchored by one of the largest albatrosses in professional sports (hint: he’s the one at the end of the alphabet). Oh, and he almost traded the Cy Young-to-be for a pretty-good (no better) ballplayer.

The guy just doesn’t get it, and then he rants and raves at a poor guy doing his job. One who is responsible in no insignificant part for contributing to the earnings potential and lifestyle of all the Giants by being a solid reporter. I could take Sabean being an incompetent moron because I know he isn’t the only GM out there who has no analytic abilities, but he has gone too far for me this time. His standoffishness and lack of respect is despicable, and the Giants would do better for themselves by firing him and bringing in somebody who understands the game from more than a gut level and can treat people with some courtesy – and maybe a little gratitude.

Why disclose his “plans” with everyone? It wouldn’t make sense. Wouldn’t make sense in any business where you have competitors, which is actually every ….umm…. every business.

I don’t think Giants season ticket holders need to have a memo sent to them in the mail with Sabean’s Master Plan. If he did have a plan, you would be able to see evidence of it on the field. The evidence is sorely lacking. This could be (likely) the 5th year in a row below .500 in a weak division. That lies at Sabean’s feat.

I'm gonna have to go ahead and disagree with you there.

I totally get your frustration. I’m not a sabean fan by any means, and he is an asshole as far as I’m concerned, but at least this time, he has a legitimate gripe.

But, as to my disagreement:

First, I think there is a plan, but it isn’t to sign a bunch of high priced free agents to long term deals that could be albatrosses down the line.

Secondly, the plan for this offseason, as far as I can tell, is to shore up the bullpen at reasonable prices, add a bit more offense through short term free agent signings where possible, allow the young hitters to gain experience against big league pitching, and rely on the starting pitching to carry the team.

Lastly, over the long term, the team is going to let the minor league system provide the pool of players that will form the core of this franchise. But it takes time for prospects to develop (and for a whole system to become deep) and the team didn’t take prospect development seriously (as far as I’m concerned) until about 2006. So this part of the plan is only starting to bear fruit. Patience is required. Signing budget busting free agents, which cost draft picks, or trading top prospects for immediate help is contrary to this plan.

We’re in a weak enough division that competing in 2009 is certainly a possibility, especially if there is only average offensive production. At the same time, the team needs to be a lot wiser with its free agent dollars than it has been over the last couple of winters when it signed some big name free agents to huge contracts that we all know are mistakes and we all complain about constantly.

Bonds stands alone.

Proud adopted parent of future big league slugger Thomas Neal

by nostocksjustbonds on Dec 10, 2008 10:57 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

exactly

For the most part the McCoven believed before last season that the team would most likely not be competitive in 2009. Therefore, the goal would be to build from inside, and we really haven’t disappointed. Many critics now consider our farm a top 5 system, and Sabes hasn’t done any stoopid trades (Cantu for Sanchez etc.) or signings that could jeopardize the future.

It sucks that the team doesn’t seem likely to compete in 2009, but I like to think of us as driving away from the cliff rather than about to crash and burn.

hmm...

I suppose I could have been a little more explicit about a plan. Let me first say that I am not advocating signing any free agent this winter – I think Sabean’s hands are basically tied because of the Zito deal. And I can also plainly see that this team is not one, two, or even three players away from a championship. I agree that any team that is not the Yankees, Red Sox, Mets, and Cubs has to build a solid nucleus from their farm system and cannot just buy a winning team.

I can see some semblance of a good strategy taking place now – though we should be clear not to confuse high draft picks (including a stratospheric jump to the bigs in Timmy’s case) due to losing with competence, but I am willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. But the team on the field is a result of a fail strategy (or plan) for years. We have been over this again and again: Tucker, Shinjo, etc. instead of young players or trying to go bigger (i.e. Vlad-type).

As far as the bullpen goes, Sabean has signed two players who will not be part of the next championship team simply due to the length of their contracts. In turn, he has delayed the potential development of young arms in the farm system by not giving them a chance in SF. He has also taken money from the payroll that could be used for international scouting, signing bonuses, etc. Additionally, bullpen pitchers are the most replaceable commodity on a team, as they are rarely consistent from year to year. So I view the bullpen signings, while solid, efficient signings for a good team, not beneficial to this team in anything but the short-term.

I am also very wary of calling low-level farm player “prospects”. My understanding is that the bulk of the Giants talent is below AA (I may be wrong in this). While it is good that we are finally excited about farm players, there is a low chance that these guys will be impact players.

I am not frustrated by the waxing and waning of my favorite professional sports team. Such is the beast. I am more frustrated with Sabean’s lack of ability. Actually I am even more upset that he is just a stupid jerk and was calling out other people’s vocations when his job, in the grand scheme of things is completely inconsequential.

Go Fred Lewis... You're better than the alternative... Yippee...

by Uribe nee Gonzalez on Dec 11, 2008 8:12 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

You can't see the plan?

As others posted above, the plan has shifted to a build from the inside and retain your prospects, unless you get a deal you can’t refuse. So he’s kept Cain, Lincecum and Sanchez, and left room for the mediocre prospects to battle for a position.

And this:

Oh, and he almost traded the Cy Young-to-be for a pretty-good (no better) ballplayer.

is a gripe that was entirely built by the rumor-trade last year. We don’t know what Sabean’s demands were, or if the trade ever became serious. I think it was a rumor created to show “Hey everyone, see that! Look what we didn’t do. We have a plan!”

Nope. Sabean as much admitted on KNBR that they were basically ready to make the deal, but the backlash was so great that he had to pull away. So reporting of Baggarly’s style and the musing of the Lunatic Fringe contributed to keeping Timmy in SF.

Wow

I give up. I have tried to present a counter-view with some backing information and what I think are coherent arguments and have been shot down on a consistent basis.

As per Sabean on KNBR: I live in Santa Barbara and I am an environmental monitor for a job site north of where I live. As you can imagine, KNBR doesn’t come in well. In the evenings I can barely get a signal, sometimes when there is cloud cover it comes in better. Point being, I don’t hear Sabean on Ralph and Tom’s show very much, so when I do hear him and he says something that makes me do a double-take, I remember it. I can’t tell you verbatim what he said, but he was extremely contrite (hard to believe, I know) and said that they were definitely interested, but the fan backlash was so strong (and the indication was it wasn’t just KNBR listeners, more more of the extreme fringe) that he decided that they couldn’t pull the trigger even if they wanted to.

Go Fred Lewis... You're better than the alternative... Yippee...

by Uribe nee Gonzalez on Dec 11, 2008 12:13 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

ok, I hadn’t heard that. The impression I got from Sabe’s quotes at the the time was that while Rios was a nice player he wasn’t enough for Lincecum and the Jays weren’t interested in adding to the pot. The Fans on the other hand seemed to be all in or all out, and Sabean got burned by the rumor mill, IMO. Now I certainly don’t know how much more he wanted Rios, but the fact that he ended up holding onto Tim, even if it doesn’t show a plan, shows a pattern when combined with the fact that Lowry*, Sanchez, Lincecum and Cain are all on the roster. How about that?

 * here’s where the plan/pattern didn’t work out as well.

I can see why Sabean is mad. In retrospect, it seems like there were a lot of Sabathia rumors without a whole lot of substance.

But I also think Sabean’s rather cryptic way of speaking fanned the flames a bit. He talks about swimming with sharks and boat races and tire kicking, and it all gets rather confusing.

My thoughts exactly. He should read Baggarly’s post a couple of days ago about the radically new environment in which rumormongering gets disseminated nowadays, and then he should learn to live with it, because it’s not going away.

And he should REALLY forget about people “holding it against him” if he doesn’t deliver the shiny new free agent or whatever. Everyone likes to kvetch and second-guess and rosterbate during the off-season, but all we really care about is what happens on the field from April to October, and that’s the only thing he’s going to be judged on.

If we really weren’t in the running for Sabathia, it could be a sign we don’t have as much money to spend as most people think. “10-4 good buddy. That’s some nice Verucaing. Out.”

The Denker bus is now bound for San Diego. Those who were passengers on it are now angrily stranded at a gas station in Modesto, CA. Not much about baseball here .

if Baggs didn't post the gossip...

there would be fewer of these sites and they would be less fun. Part of the fun of sports—for me at least—is the anticipation of what sort of crazy stuff might happen. Despite all the times when a top player predictably signs with the Evil Empire, there are times when something unexpected happens. I don’t fault the reporters for passing along what they hear. Hell, they might have done all of us a service by driving up the price on the ridiculous Yankees. BTW… does anyone know what their payroll is going to be next year? Is $250 million out of the question?

These meetings are about gossip and gossiping about gossip and gossiping about the gossipers who are gossiping about gossip.

All the wet blankets are going to be bored in a couple weeks. Enjoy it while it lasts.

I think Sabes is mad because he had to speak to Barbieri and Tolbert.

They say some players get out of bed hitting; Pablo Sandoval doesn't wait that long

Sabean is under a lot of stress. Sabean has a legitimate beef. Sabean goes on a mild and controlled rant without the use of profanity or personal insults. Sabean resumes not thinking about how to acquire Daniel Murphy.

I can dig it

But seriously, he was never in consideration to replace Steve Perry in Journey, so I don’t know why he should take that out on reporters.

No, really, I have updated my blog this year: http://skaldheim.livejournal.com/tag/baseball

Frustration

As stated before believe Sabean has become frustrated. Frustrated with the slow process of free agency and trades. Sabean got off to a quick strike. He scored quickly with Affeldt. Right after the arbitration deadline with Renteria. And wants to strike quickly here at the winter meetings with a starting pitcher. RJ says it is too eary. Agents say we will get back to you. Meanwhile Sabean wants to wrap up his “To Do List”.

Be patient, Grasshopper.

Annoying

After reading what Sabean said, I felt like ‘what a punk’. Why is he whining so much about this? With the internet, high fan interest, winter meetings held in VEGAS, 1/6 of a billion dollars going to one player, shitty real life (US economy, people who hate their jobs or family), there is going to be rapid talk about everything, whether it’s true or not, and not just in baseball. But publishing ‘rumors’ on a baseball blog and the media talking about signing players, I just don’t see what the big deal is. I think most Giants fans are not pissed or disappointed that we did not sign CC, or that we will not sign Tex or Manny or any other high-priced free agent. What they are pissed about is that Barry Zito still has 5 years on his stupid-ass contract, the Giants have few to little mlb-ready prospects, and our team has sucked since 2004. When the dude earlier said that Sabean doesn’t have a plan, well, maybe he does, but his plan sucked, and therefore, the Giants sucked. I just wish we had good (better) talent to go along with the high payroll we keep seeing every year.

I take it as someone who just lost a bit of control during a stressful situation. You surround any of us with reporters trying to catch a story then you’re going to come off as irritable every now & again too.

Don't think, it could only hurt the ballclub.

I agree

that he probably just snapped, had a bad day, maybe woke up on the wrong side of the bed, saw his last alimony bill or whatever…I just think it’s really weak these days for people to always blame the internet, the media, for a lot of problems that go way deeper than reporters posting rumors on websites
/throws stone in glass house, breaks wall, air comes in, biosphere no longer
But whatever, I digress; I am just unhappy that our team sucks more than anything else, and that since the Giants moved to the Bay we haven’t had a World Series title

He needs to handle the media much better...

that’s part of his job, and he does that about as well as some of his personnel decisions

I hope Sabean gets testicular cancer, no wait…maybe some kind of flesh eating bacteria that only attacks his genitals. That’s something I’ve never wished on another man (or woman, for that matter) but he truly deserves it. I’m not saying I want him to die…I just want his testicles to rot off. That’s not so bad, right?

He did draft Lincecum. He should be allowed at least one testicle for that.
