The Curious Case of Benji Molina
If/when the Giants have finished their off season moves, do you think it will include a trade of Big Money? I'd think that if B-Mo is traded, it's most likely to the Red Sox or Yankees (assuming both teams move on from Varitek & Posada). Remember this isn't a "should we trade Benji?" thread, it's "will they trade Benji?". If they are to move him, what would you want in return from either of those teams? What's realistic?
I'd like ot think I'm being witty and maybe even original in using this film title as a pun, but if not oh freaking well..

I don’t believe they will trade him in the offseason. Mid to late July? Maybe.

That certainly is what to expect from Sabean
But will there be a market around the all star break?

I agree.
They’ll move Benjie only if they aquire a legit 3B (Crede?) so they can move Pablo to C,
-or-
Posey lights it up in the minors, gets called up and hits well on the big team
-or-
they’re totally out of it and someone offers them a king’s ransome for Molina
My adopted Giant: "Raptor Jesus" Guzman
They should absolutely trade him
The Mets, Brewers, Red Sox, Reds (maybe), Astros, Tigers, and a few more are all teams that might be interested in one year of Molina.
Ideally, the Giants could trade Molina for some pieces they can use to try and land Beltre. Same goes for Winn as well, although to a lesser extent
but how likely do you see any of this?

strike the Reds
They traded with the O’s for Hernandez to play C.

I don’t think Ramon Hernandez is enough of a player to really rule out anything, although Jocketty might think so I guess

I am preceding on the assumption they view him as a pain sponge. It is interesting to note, if memory serves me well, he does qualify as a type "A" free agent currently. Hitting in that park should only help in that regard. So that would limit some fo Molinia’s appeal.

How come everyone here seems to love Beltre and Burrell? I’m not flaming or anything… Just asking out of curiosity. If we were to go after Beltre, I feel like we may as well just try to get Edwin Encarnacion, who is younger and will likely put up similar numbers to Beltre.

Beltre is way better defensively than Encarnacion. More clutch too, just ask Jeff Brantley.

man, you took the words right out of my mouth. Adrian Beltre is the most overrated player in the history of McCovey Chronicles. His numbers are good for a player who makes about half of what he makes. And then you’re going to trade something of value to get one year of him?? No thanks. Play Pablo at third with Ishi and Phelps at first, or sign Pat Burrell, who we would at least not to give up anything other than money to get.

True.
He’s probably the most overrated player here. But also we always underrate players probably more often than not. And Beltre is so underrated by everyone (http://www.adrianbeltreisbetterthanpedrofeliz.com/notjustalittlebetterbutalotbetter.html) that we push it so much more.

Should they? Yes (assuming they can find a 3B who can out hit Molina, and out-field Sandoval)
Will they? No. On the plus side – draft pix!

I think Sabean likes him too much. He’s a great guy, a solid catcher, and a decent hitter. He has gamer written all over him.
This is his last year on his contract, IIRC. If true, I’d be shocked if Posey rose enough in the ranks to force Sabean’s hand in trading Bengie.
I really wish he would, though. Pablo should be playing catcher, and there is a need for catchers on a number of teams. You could probably get a league average player for him, which is what the Giants could always use.
STEVE HOLM! refuses to be the odd man out.
I love Pablo, and love the energy he brought to the team late last year. I just don’t think he’s ever going to be a big league catcher, especially with Posey coming down the pike. Posey is supposed to be a legit gold glove caliber catcher. If Pablo can be -10 runs (ish) at 3B, the future will look pretty bright with An-Vil, Posey, and Pablo all mashing togeather in a couple of years.
true
and that’s even more reason to trade Bengie. It’s rather nice that Pablo can play all 3 positions if need be.

i'm hoping...
that he does well enough next year to classify as a Type A Free Agent so that we can maybe get a 1st rounder or at least two draft picks.

For this to happen, the Giants would have to be sure that Molina isn’t going to accept arbitration. In 2010 Molina will be an obese 36 year old catcher and I doubt there’s going to be a big market for him.
If the Giants do offer arbitration to Bengie, they should first come out and announce that either Posey or Sandoval will be their starter in 2010.

Regardless of how much I respect Bengie as a player,
if Sabean lets this team go into Opening Day with Molina as the cleanup hitter, he should be fired.
Matt Cain's drinking buddy
Just as a matter of clarification………he should’ve been fired a long time ago.
Why isn't Sabean held accountable for leading the Giants into many years of mediocrity???
if Sabean lets this team go into Opening Day with Molina as the cleanup hitter two years in a row, he should be fired.
Fixed it.

The question was,
“will they trade Benji” (sic). I would have to say there is absolutely no chance that the Giants will trade Bengie, unless we are completely out, and almost mathematically eliminated from the playoffs at the trading deadline, AND the Giants get an offer that bowls them over.
Everybody knows that both Sabean and Bochy highly value veteran savvy-ness. There is no way that they would turn the handling of the pitching staff over to someone as unproven behind the plate as Pablo. Ain’t gonna happen.
