C.C. will be known as the one that got away
Not really since it seems that the Giants were never that big of a dog in the hunt for Sabathia. I want to think that were the Giants to up their offer to 4 years at $25 million per (lots of backloading til after 2017), that they could have landed him, but alas twas not to be. That being said, I'd assume we're going to sign the big unit, and that will probably mean an end to F/A spending. I'm thinking that as per Sabean's M.O. we're going to see how the club does until all-star breakish time, and then Sabean will try to sucker a team into treating Jessie English like he's the next Lincecum and give us that bat we've been pining for. It's a bit of a dissapointment, since I was hoping to have the best rotation since Maddux signed with the Braves and 2nd best in the past 40 years (better than the Dodgers of the early 60's and better than Orioles team with all those 20 game winners), but I suppose settling for one of the better rotations in the majors will have to do for now. And now, your thoughts on the matter....

And how the hell do you get 2017 out of a 4 year contract?
¿Julio is tourist in San Francisco? Harper's Bizarre!
the talk was that any big money deal the gigantes would do
would require backloading the deal until after the ballpark is paid off (2017)

I really hope he doesn’t collapse under the pressure those bipolar fans and the NY media will put him under. New York isn’t quite like Cleveland or Milwaukee.

Either way, I was using the 4 years
because I’d assume that Sabean would want to limit the on field liability of a FA starting pitcher

I'm fine he went to NYY
I was always on the fence about signing him anyway, he’s had a lot of pitcher abuse points already and while it’s purely speculative, I would assume his body type doesn’t age as well as others.
as long as we don't have to see him 4 or 5 times a year
I’m fine with it. With Hank saying they’ll make a run at Manny as well, I am pretty thrilled to see that they’ll be locked up to more huge contracts and still not solve their problems enough to be serious contenders

Anything that keeps the Dodgers from getting Manny back
is ok by me…I’m still hoping that they lose Blake, and Furcal to FA and have to settle for FA replacements, and we all know what stellar options there are on teh market for 3B & SS.

My fourth favorite after Swordfishtrombones, Rain Dogs, Franks Wild Years (which I think Waits has described as something of a trilogy; certainly they’ve always gone together in my mind).

Although it’s hard to call Alice “after Mule Variations” as it was written, arranged, staged and performed around the same time as Bone Machine. While he went back and recorded it 10 years later (perhaps or perhaps not utilizing some original recordings depending on the story) it’s still guided by the original mood and concept.
So in that way it’s located in time both before AND after Mule Variations I guess.
Still brilliant, though. That point stands.
(Orphans has much the same kind of achronology, many of the scooped up orphans being re-recorded specifically for that release. Not much in the way of cohesion, but lots and lots of high points).

I was somewhat okay
with the Giants gambling on a 5 year/$120M offer to Sabathia. Signing any FA pitcher is a gamble , and IMO signing Sabathia was a bigger gamble than average, given his weight and potential leg/knee problems. I am so very glad that the Giants did not sign him to a 7 year/$161M contract. Stupid Yankees.

by VizquelQuest on Dec 10, 2008 10:41 AM PST up reply actions
CC is the new Vlad
He would have changed this team at a point when this team NEEDS a change. He may have posted an all century year pitching in the NL west. Instead we will see him destroy the AL East and just dream of what could have been. Its sad and what makes me angry is all the rumors about the Giants being in on him was probably just PR bullsh** from Sabean just like in years past. Its fodder for the lunatic fringe to keep us happy while they go out and sign more CFs.
He hasn’t signed yet so I hope the Giants at least make an offer. As of right now they had a guy AND his wife who WANTED to be Giants and they didn’t even offer anything.
Bring me the head of Barry Zito!
CC wasn't as perfect of a fit as Vlad
Both were rumored to want to play in SF but CC doesn’t fill a spot that is the team’s biggest weakness like Vlad would have.
Also Vlad sign what even at the time was a modest contract compared to CC who just blew away the highest contract ever to a pitcher.
by VizquelQuest on Dec 10, 2008 10:43 AM PST up reply actions
Not so fast
Our position of strength becomes a weakness with one more Lowry like injury.Nobody likes talking about it but most pitchers go down for an extended stretch at some point in their careers. Cain and Timmy are due and everyone in this room knows it. Pretending that CC would not be a great fit on any team is just silly. Yes we need offense but I’ll never say no to a Cy young horse with a bright future, and don’t pretend that Zito had a bright future.
Bring me the head of Barry Zito!
Just to clarify, I was for signing CC before I was against it.
If he was willing to sign here for less than the Yankees were offering he would have been a good signing.
If he wasn’t willing to sign for less there would be just too much money committed to starting pitching which is one of the few strengths the team has and is also an area with reinforcements on the way.
After Burks left the team, the lineup was sorely missing a bat to pair with Barry. Vlad could have been the bat as well fill in a position that was vacant. He was also signed for well less than expected because the Yankees and Red Sox didn’t get in the mix.
by VizquelQuest on Dec 10, 2008 3:57 PM PST up reply actions
Wait a minute...
If, as you say, “most pitchers go down for an extended stretch at some point in their careers.” Doesn’t that apply to every team and every player? So our position of strength remains such if every team loses a pitcher or pitchers for some time. And what if the pitcher to go down was the one that your team paid $160M for 7 years. CC does not have a bad history of injury, but his weight would suggest that he will not have a long career. Matt and Timmy are more due for injury? I think CC is more likely to go down than Matt or Timmy.
CC will be a disastrous fit for any team should he go down. $160M is a huge risk.

Well I could just delete this and make it look like I posted this first…

Now I'm glad Yost worked the hell out of him down the stretch...
…since he’s going to be a Yankee.

not sure if this was true
but i am disappointed that it sounds like the giants didnt even try to offer him or really have substantial talks with him. not even the 5/100.

Totally Agree
I think we all like CC and thought he was worth a substantial amount of money, but the one thing we were all worrying about was exactly how much he’s worth. 120 OK, 160 No way? That’s the heart of the matter.
Think if Sabean said “Yankees offered 161 million and we offered 155, and he chose us” I think we would have alot of people pissed.
What we did was the equivalent of walking away instead of doubling down, and i think this time around it was a better move than walking away from Vlad who we still need.

I dont think
he was every really a possibility for us. Doesnt suprise me that he will be wearing pinstripes for the next 7 years. Now I think Texiera will be in Boston.
we were never going to sign CC and never had a shot
money talks and because of the albatross, CC was never a realistic option for the Giants.
Vlad on the other hand, we didn’t even try to get him and it had nothing to do with money.

My main regret is that he is a Yankee
For some reason I feel a connection to CC because he was in the same graduating class at my high school and I played in the same Babe Ruth league as him. I never really talked to him ever so I probably shouldn’t feel any connections to him but it still makes me a little sad that he went to the Yankees.
Better than the Dodgers though.
Catcher are base running. Hitters are offense.
Only [hella] games left until the end of Zito's contract.
nah
At this point in time I think it’s pretty realistic to believe that the combined production of TimA and Madbum will at least match what CC would give us over the length of a 6 or 7 year deal, especially considering the moneys.
Anyways, there are two of them and they will be playing on the team at the same time with basic the rotation we have right now in a couple years (in theory), and we’ll have a fat chunk of change to spend elsewhere instead (extensions etc.). I ain’t complaining.
