Baggs Blog take on the issue.
Bottom line: the Giants could sign Renteria tomorrow and it wouldn’t cost them a pick. It’s just another reason these two parties appear to be gravitating toward each other.
There’s been plenty of reasoned analysis on the blog circuit about the attractiveness of a two-year deal for Renteria as opposed to a four-year deal for Furcal. Can’t say I disagree. But how accurate were the contract numbers (two years, $18 million) in last week’s jump-the-gun report from a New York radio station that Renteria had signed with the Giants? We know the St. Louis Cardinals are another suitor for Renteria, so I’d imagine he would command at least two years plus a vesting option.

Trade Burriss?
Everyone knows the Giants like getting down to business quickly. There’s no doubt Brian Sabean would prefer to have his free-agent infielder signed, sealed and delivered before he strolls into the lobby of the Bellagio next week. (Especially if he’s thinking of including Emmanuel Burriss in trade proposals.)

The more I think about it, the more I’d rather just re-sign Vizquel.

I’m not in love with Renteria, but AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH NO PLEASE JEEBUS!
Vizquel was a Good Giant, but his expiration date is firmly in the past.

I've actually kinda been thinking this more and more
Personally, I’m of the opinion that Burriss should be given his rightful chance. Obviously, him succeeding next year in the majors isn’t exactly a sure thing, so having Omar around in case Burriss implodes wouldn’t be the worst thing.
It seems the general sentiment is that Renteria is a HUGE question mark with the glove, and his bat ain’t exactly a sure thing either. Plus we’d have to cough up eight figures over at least two years.
Omar would sign a one year deal for virtually nothing. We all know what he can do with the glove, and he did get better with the bat (relatively, at least) towards the end of the year. We could also bring him in as a defensive replacement beast while pinch hitting for Burriss or on double switches, especially since Burriss can play second. His bat could be useful off the bench too; I would much rather have him pinch-bunting than Eugenio. Plus he’s the man, and would add that veteran presence mumbo-jumbo to the clubhouse.

Omar would not sign for “virtually” nothing. He raped us last year for “virtually” five million dollars and would be making the same this year if he had not been hurt. The man is done…let him retire, paint, and go into the HOF gracefully without hitting below the mendoza line. Would be a real shame for it to be renamed ‘The Vizquel Line’

Just another in the long line of over rated, aging, declining veteran players to be signed by Sabean. More of the same BS we’ve seen for years from him.
I just wonder how he keeps his job?
Why isn't Sabean held accountable for leading the Giants into many years of mediocrity???

I’m as happy to trash Sabean as anyone, but even I think it’s a little silly to trash the man for signing a player who he hasn’t actually signed yet for what would reportedly be a fairly modest contract.

I don't understand it
The Giants seem to want to field a contender in 2009, and their fans don’t seem to want them to. I’d rather them try and fail then not try at all. If Edgar Renteria or Furcal is the only move to improve the offense this offseason, it’s a waste, but I’m sure more is going to follow.

i agree, but it depends on how they fail at trying. to take an extreme, if they “tried” by trading Cain and Lincecum away for junk, signed Rentaria for a 15 mil/year 5 year deal, etc, etc I’d rather they didn’t “try”. Spending money on Free Agents that won’t cost a draft pick and where there is need… try away, I say.
Castillo got the DFA. Guestimate for Castillo DFA to come before the 2009 season = 2.

I can’t imagine a scenario in which Renteria makes the difference between the Giants being contenders or not.

Now that this is official, I’d be okay with a short term Renteria contract.
