McCovey Chronicles Community Prospect List: #3
1. Madison Bumgarner
2. Buster Posey
Tim Alderson, RHP, 20 - Drafted 2007, #22 overall. Pitched in High-A at San Jose in 2008 with 145.1 IP, 125 H, 124 K, 34 BB, 4 HR, 1.09 WHIP, 2.79 ERA, and a 45% groundball rate. Throws a fastball that sits low 90's and can hit low to mid 90's, a slider, and a change. He is a polished pitcher who still has very good upside.
Angel Villalona, 1B, 18 - Signed out of the "Dominic Republican" in 2006. Hit .285/.344/.450 with 15 BB, 42 K, 5 HR, and 20 total XBH in 229 PA in Rookie Ball in 2007 as a 16 year old. Hit .263/.312/.435 with 18 BB, 118 K, 17 HR, and 46 total XBH in ~500 PA in A-Ball at Augusta as a 17 year old. As a hitter, he has a ceiling that is rivaled by few batters in the minors, but he is still extremely young and still needs refinement.
Conor Gillaspie, 3B, 21 - Drafted 2008, #37 overall. Hit .419/.500/.697 with 38 BB and 22 K over 234 AB his junior year of college at Wichita State in 2008. Projects to hit for good average, a good OBP, and decent power.
Nick Noonan, 2B, 19 - Drafted 2007, #32 overall. Hit .316/.357/.451 over 206 AB in Rookie Ball in 2007 with 18 SB and 3 CS in 2007. Hit .279/.315/.415 over 499 AB in A-Ball in 2008 with 29 SB and 4 CS. Survived an aggressive assignment to Augusta in 2008.

Hit .305/.407/.632 over 220 AB with 35 BB and 42 K his junior year. Is hitting approximately .261/.368/.500 in the HWL. He is a big, toolsy player who is considered to have not broken out yet despite his good college numbers.
Testers - Henry Sosa, Wendell Fairley, Rafael Rodriguez, Travis Ishikawa, Kevin Pucetas, Brandon Crawford, Clayton Tanner
Note: Sorry Marcello, no time to add any tonight, I will sometime though.

Angel
In the hopes that Tim will become so enraged by my lack of respect for his ceiling that he will never allow another baserunner again.
My current Interwebs obsession is pretty awesome. Also, my website is called ChatterBalks Dot Com. It's not being updated right now. Hope for more at your own risk.
I'll take demonstrated success over pie in the sky any day.
Anvil needs to have a breakout year before I really want to rank him up with those who have.
+1
Let’s hope he brings that next season….

Wearing the crown by 2011. Or at least the LOOGY hat
Went Villalona here. After seeing OGC’s post about T2’s home/road splits, I lost a little of my enthusiasm for Alderson.

The strikeout and walk rates really aren’t.

I fail to see
How one can draw a strong correlation between park effects and K/BB rate.
I understand HR/FB, BABIP, etc – but K/BB?
Does SJ have someone reflecting the sun in all of the hitters eyes? :)

Actually, yes.
San Jose’s ballpark is oriented in a southwesterly direction, which can leave a lot of glare in the evening sky in hitter’s eyes, particularly right handed hitters.
Most parts face in an easterly direction, avoiding this.

damn, Brute...
unless you were being sarcastic, that’s some knowledge right thar!
Psycho killer, qu'est-ce que c'est?
No problem.
The Giants are working on a mobile glare reflector to travel wherever Tim2 pitches. When confronted about it, they’ll claim it’s a green, eco-friendly solar panel demonstration project, and what are you doing to help us save the planet, pal? Or do you like global warming? Thought so.

Definitely the One They Call the Other Tim
I’m aware of the H/R splits, but he’s played – and suceeded – at a higher level than the two guys ahead of him and Villalona. And even though he’s a couple years older than AnVil, he was still young for his level. And, ooh, a young pitcher had H/R splits in a hitter-friendly league! It’s not like Villalona lit the Sally on fire. I know that if I’m another team’s GM, I’d rather get Alderson in a trade.
Going Tim II
So young and so good. AnVil has a higer ceiling but Tim II looks more like he will get to his.

Can we go slower on these after we get past the top four?
I feel it’s a bit rushed. Maybe every other day?
Noonan. Nooooonan!

That's the plan.
It’s just everybody knows these four prospects, and probably has them rated in their own mind. We intend to leave the polls after the top four open for at least 2 days.

Angel Villalona
1. Madison Bumgarner
2. Tim Alderson
3. Angel Villalona
This kid continued his improvement in 2008. How many high school seniors could have played this well in the SAL? Expect another season of improvement in 2009 and then a huge breakout season in his third pro season 2010.
I don't think ranking is a relative thing, however.
Yeah – he did good for a 17 year old kid.
But he is still a long way from the majors and has a lot of improving to do before he will be a viable major leaguer.

I like wilriv's rankings
that’s how I’d be voting so far

Going With Alderson.
For Alderson, Bumgarner and Villalona, all of them require some major polish at this level. But for me, Villalona needs the most polishing. His upside remains tremendous, but so are his swing and misses on curveballs.
SFDugout.com is BACK! See the Top 50 Giants Prospects!
I wouldn’t argue with either Alderson or Villalona, but I’m going with Angel.
I tend to like upside a bit more than polish in my prospects. Basically, Villalona has star potential and Alderson doesn’t. Basically, Alderson just isn’t advanced enough yet to trump’s Villalona’s sky-high ceiling.
Often a players upside is inversely proportional to his distance to the majors.
We all look like high-upside super stars in Tball. The closer players get to the ML level, the more the ceiling drops.
Don’t punish Alderson for being closer to the ML than Angel.
by FairweatherFan on Nov 9, 2008 9:12 PM PST up reply actions
Yeah, but they’re not that far apart. One guy was in Low-A, the other in High-A. I can see the argument for Alderson, though. I just prefer Angel slightly.
In terms of actual levels, no
In terms of years before likely debut, they are quite far apart.
Alderson is more polished and much closer to making his ML debut than Angel. It’s really easy and great to talk about Angel’s upside because he is so far from the majors that you don’t have to hold him accountable for his shortcomings.

As for the next poll...
I would keep it short. I seems like Villalona will run away with it, though i would put Villalona, Gillespie, Ishikawa and Noonan on it, though others would probably disagree. I’m higher on Travis than most.
Todd Jennings: If he's on the DL, he can't suck as much, right?
Probably just pencil in Angel for #4 and move to #5

Angel
I want to see what his numbers translate to for a senior year of high school or freshman year of college. You know, other places where he’d still be younger than the competition.
Brian Sabean figures that if he buys enough bottles, one of them is bound to have lightning in it.
TimToo
As much as I love Angel’s upside and think he still has a bright future going forward, I have to go with the guy who succeeded at the higher level. Alderson may not be the sexy pick here, but I think his solid track record and overall polish needs to carry the day. I hope by this time next year, Angel has done so much to refine his skillset as a hitter that this isn’t even debatable and Angel blows away the field, because clearly he’s our most TALENTED prospect… just not our best.

Someone above suggested Nick himself was posting…but for
him to reregister two more usernames is a bit much.
They say some players get out of bed hitting; Pablo Sandoval doesn't wait that long
there was 1 vote for him at the time
And I was kidding (of course, you never know). But I’m sure there are some people who just really really love Noonan. And besides, if you want to take a hitter who’s perhaps a little less risky than Anvil, Noonan’s not a bad pick, although I personally would put him a few spots lower.
Less arm, more talk. Raisingcain is a GAMER.
