TUESDAY! TUESDAY! TUESDAY!

Yep indeedy.  This Tuesday, November 11, is the date which MLB has chosen to announce the National League Cy Young winner is Tim Lincecum.  Um...I meant they are announcing the recipient of the award.  It should be Tim Lincecum but sometimes people are dumb.

In any case, we have not had a Timmy Day in a while and it is with great hope that we can have a final stirring Timmy Day to close out the 2008 season.  I know that I have been struggling to focus on the GM meetings in large part because until the award is announced, I am still stuck in 2008.

Anyone else feel this way?  Anyone else excited and counting the seconds (approximately 240,000 if my really quick estimate is correct) until we get some much needed validation.  I don't know why but as much as life goes on with a snub, I feel that this award would be more than just a personal achievement for Timmy, it would be a prize for all of the fans.

The votes are cast, the ballots are drawn, the polls are closed.  It's just a couple days now.  Anyone want to share a Lincecum memory?

I have two.  My father has been raving on and on about his seats for the last game of the season.  Tenth row, third base side.  He had watched Timmy but never like this and he's been marvelling ever since.  I began hyping Timmy a couple days after he was drafted but dad didn't really listen.  It does the heart joy to see him on the bandwagon.

My own personal lincecum moment was at his final minor league start.  I sat right behind the plate, front row, and watched in awe as batter after batter flailed away.  Many walked from the plate with their head shaking.  I had never seen a pitcher with such filthy stuff from such a viewing angle.  Hopefully I can do that again.

My Timmy memory is when my wife said she would let him get her pregnant, we have been having trouble ourselves. Hopefully I would have a kid with a blazing fastball, nasty curve, and a change up that makes even the best batters weep!

go timmy!

And I really hope the voters get it right this time. I will be pretty pissed if Webb or Sabathia win. Santana, I would be disappointed, but it would at least be somewhat justifiable. Still, I’m really really hoping for Timmy and I think he’ll get it.

It was hard for me to watch his games as the season went on

knowing his CY chances made me so stat crazy. Tracking the K’s, ERA+, FIP, his competitors etc. Every time he would give up a hit or ER I would get so mad at the defense for not doing enough. I’m glad it’s all over.

I want this Cy Young

Bad.

Been a Giants fan for 30 years and I don’t have one.

If Santana gets it I’ll be PO’ed, but probably won’t be inclined to inflict physical violence.

If Webb or Sabathia gets it someone’s dog is getting kicked.

Favorite Tim Moment

My own favorite Tim Lincecum moments would be:

. Watching that grainy 41-second video at www.calleaguers.com. Just watching the ease with which he threw long toss and the pop it made in the catcher’s glove some 120 or so feet away brought tears to my eyes.

. Watching Tim in person for the first time in San Jose. Wondering why they were letting that high school kid pitch to the big boys — and then seeing him make the batters look like the real kids.

. Watching his debut on Willie Mays’ 76th birthday.

. Watching him dominate the Diamondbacks on 7/1/07, marking his second straight great start and putting his June slump totally behind him.

. Seeing the “Tim WinCyYoung” sign at the park.

By the way, that final Fresno outing you mentioned was indeed a great one — probably the very best of his fine minor league career. I must have been sitting just a few rows behind you, right over the umpire’s right shoulder.

Lincewho?

There amass been plenty of articles written this spring about the stud shortstop Matt Cain and Tim Lincecum , as well as the fluid young outfielders and thirteen basemen Kevin Frandsen.

Not to be the bracing splash of cold water, but...

We all know baseball voters can get things wrong. I’m usually surprised when they get things right, in fact. And we know that the CY voters are preternaturally enamored of wins (Webb), and secondarily of ERA (Santana). Those are the big, shiny, sparkly bits of foil that captivate those cats. I personally believe that there is an argument to be made only for Lincecum and Sabathia, and that if those two guys weren’t around, only then would I bring Santana into the conversation. And only if those three guys didn’t exist would I put Webb even in the conversation.

It isn’t enough just to cite a bunch of sophisticated stats (and I mean “sophisticated” in the positive sense, which should be its only sense, and not the current right-wing, negative, anti-intellectual sense of that word) and say they “prove” Lincecum was better than anyone else. Stats aren’t the truth of anything— they are essential for describing certain components. I have read some of the cases made on behalf of Lincecum that purport to “prove” that he “obviously” is the better pitcher. They are strong cases, but the case for Sabathia is strong, too— it’s not nothing. For that matter, the case for Santana is not nothing. (The case for Webb is, however, nothing.) I also believe that some of the stats I have seen cited to “prove” Lincecum’s case are cherry-picked and a bit too abstract to be truly descriptive of what the player is adding to the team’s chances of winning. While certainly wins should be largely ignored and a half-dozen other major stats should be given a lot of weight, and maybe a few more lesser-used stats should be given SOME weight, the arrangement of statistics are nevertheless an argument on behalf of a conclusion, rather than the self-evident capital-T Truth.

I am certainly not saying that Lincecum doesn’t deserve it— if I had a vote, he would get mine. But I am saying that if Sabathia gets it, Lincecum wasn’t robbed; if Santana gets it, Lincecum arguably wasn’t robbed; and if Webb gets it, that sack of crap should be arrested like OJ for stealing sports memorabilia that belongs to someone else.

Go Tim! I am 1-for-1 this month on backing winning candidates— I’m on a roll.

I'm adopting a true Giant and an awe-inspring gamer: tk. "Atta babe."

The vote

Since the players and fans know Tim Lincecum was the best pitcher in the NL last season, it is my belief that there will be a plurality of writers who know that as well.

If you think it comes down to Tim and CC, it really comes down to Tim. CC pitched brilliantly after coming over to Milwaukee and was truly the best pitcher in the NL during that time. But he put in less than half a season for them.

I’m not certain Tim will win the award, but I believe he will. What I am certain of is that he deserves it.

This line
if Webb gets it, that sack of crap should be arrested like OJ for stealing sports memorabilia that belongs to someone else.

Is both topical and poignant. Well played.

Favorite Timmy moment...

Was getting to see Randy Johnson v. Timmy face off in AZ. It was one of my few chances I got to see the Giants this year and I hyped it up to some friends as the game I’d tell my Grandkids about 40 years down the road. They laughed and said my grand kids wouldn’t know who either of those two were. Phooey to them. Phooey.

Unfortunately, Eugenio had to ruin the night.

by Fresburg on Nov 9, 2008 5:38 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

I love stan fresburg. sweet.

seriously tho, Eugenio didn’t ruin that game.
that honor goes to boulder skull, for making him play LF.

I will not join in the Eugenio bashing. He’s just young and inexperienced. besides, doesn’t he have more “walk-off” hits than anyone else on this pathetic offense? If Eugenio can “learn the game”, he can be a real difference maker, imho. or else a nice trading chip.

I was at Timmy's last Fresno start as well

Although he had some control problems, he had the no-hitter going through the 8th, i believe. Then, because of our friendly pitch count rules, he got yanked. I was pretty pissed, but understood that it was for the greater good.

Different start

I think the start you are describing was what I believe was Tim’s penultimate start at Fresno, on a Monday night after being rained out of his start on Sunday. (I remember that one, since it is a long drive from the Bay Area to Fresno only to find out the game was rained out 45 minutes before it was scheduled to start.)

On a cool evening, Tim did indeed pitch a no-hitter for 6 1/3 innings, although he looked worse in doing so than in any minor league start in which I saw him. I think he walked five or six, and his control cost him the chance at a complete game no-hitter. Since the game was rescheduled as a double header, it was only seven innings long. But in the seventh, Tim hit another of his wild streaks, and his chances were gone.

Still, I have to admit that I was rather impressed that when he pitched the worst I had seen him pitch, he still was able to throw a no-hitter for 6 1/3 innings. In a month of pitching in Fresno, Tim yielded only a dozen hits — with only one coming with runners on and none with RISP.

In Tim’s final minor league outing — which came on a hot Sunday afternoon precisely a week before he made his major league debut on 5/6/7 — I believe he fanned 14 batters in just six innings, as his control was as good as I had ever seen it. He just kept pounding the corners at the knees — and retired 14 of his 18 outs by strikeout as a result.

You may be combining his last two Fresno starts in your mind, although I must say it was pleasant reliving them!

by sharksrog on Nov 10, 2008 11:26 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I didn’t want to correct the original post, but you are correct. The final start was 6 IP, 14 Ks, 2 hits. One was a long fly ball double down the line that the left or right fielder couldnt’ get to. Don’t remember the direction.

Rain-out

First, I’d like to echo some of the posts above; this was the year of Tim, so it is very hard for me to pick a single positive moment.

But my main Tim memory is when I bought tickets to watch his match-up with Santana here in NY, Bochy switched the rotation order, and I got to watch Sanchez give up 3R in 4 innings (6 Ks though) before the sky’s opened, thunderstoem ensued and the Giants went on to lose 5-0, getting 3 hits. And of course, after Bochy moved Tim up a day, he gave up 4 runs on 9 hits in 6 innings. Maybe this isn’t a Tim memory as much as when I realized I hated Bochy.

Castillo got the DFA. Guestimate for Castillo DFA to come before the 2009 season = 2.

The early results from the Pennsylvania, Ohio and Florida baseball writers will be key. If they go for Lincecum, then that’s a good sign. At this point, Wisconsin is too close to call. I’ve written off the Deep South as Brandon Webb country.

Man, I am freaking out. For some reason I am deeply emotionally attached to this to an extent I almost feel like it is my award. Perhaps it is the years and years of stress and suck and this is some sort of validation. Don’t really know, to be honest.
