Resolution for the Offseason
WHEREAS: I would be entirely fine with Travis Ishikawa starting at first against right-handers, and Josh Phelps starting at first against left-handers. An upgrade would be fantastic, but a Phelshi platoon would give the Giants an opportunity to see if the Ishikawa's resurgence was for real.
WHEREAS: I have no problem trying Pablo Sandoval for 100 games at third next season, with Kevin Frandsen an option against left-handers. Sandoval might have the range of a legless Bob Brenly, but at least he has soft hands and a good arm.
WHEREAS: There are four options in the outfield, with nary a dud in the bunch. Aaron Rowand had an ugly slump to end the season, he's overpaid, and he never really made sense on a team with Randy Winn already on the roster, but he's still a worthy starter on most teams.
WHEREAS: Noah Lowry's arm and shoulder and elbow and thumbs and cuticles and wrists and triceps and three of his four humors are all questionable for the upcoming season; I'm pulling for him -- I really, really am -- but there's a difference between "pulling for" and "counting on."
WHEREAS: Kevin Pucetas interests me as a pitching prospect, and I'm looking forward to seeing how he does in Connecticut and Fresno, but I doubt his ability to survive the Bocock rocket straight from the Cal League to the majors. Note: the original astronaut on the Bocock rocket burned up upon reentry.
WHEREAS: Two of the most valuable players in the organization can't legally drink, and in the event of rotational implosion, it would be way too tempting to rush them into a major league rotation.
RESOLVED: The Giants' highest free-agent priority should be a low-cost starting pitcher.
None of this CC Sabathia silliness, mind you. This resolution is only in favor of guys who would accept a one- or two-year deal. Greg Maddux. Carl Pavano. Randy Wolf. Pedro Martinez. Paul Byrd. Orlando Hernandez. Brad Penny. Those aren't in order of preference, but none of those players (with the possible exceptions of Wolf and Penny) should want more than a few million for a year or two. If one of these guys stays healthy and reasonably effective, the Giants don't have to rush a prospect, and they don't have to rely on uncertainties like Steve Hammond. If one of these guys signs for a few million and disintegrates, no big whoop. INMM.
Agree or disagree?

Martinez
I have to admit, it is an interesting option. However, isn’t he more of a 5 inning guy now? With him starting, our pen is going to get a lot of work (they might anyway!). And if we are running out the same type of middle relief, it probably won’t result in a good outcome.

Especially with our staff averages...
Sanchez 5.44
Zito 5.63
Cain 6.4
Lincecum 6.76

Yes for Cain and Lincecum..
I’m just talking about Sanchez and Zito. Sanchez could go up, or he could stay the same. And Zito figures to stay the same or go down.

Still, I don’t think there’s a rotation out there that’s going to have more than 2 or 3 pitchers at most averaging over 6 innings per start.

The Expos put a lot of innings on that arm and he can’t sneak anything by anyone anymore.

We should get him to make Zito feel better – Livan was one of only 4 starters who threw a slower fastball than Zito this year.
..so allow me to present Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain as two sweet, sweet bottles of warming hooch.

Also, it’s unlikely whatever Bay Area ties he has is going to make him want to travel cross country to his home in Montoursville, Pennsylvania. It’s very unlikely that he’s going to sign with west coast team.

What about Joe Martinez instead of Pucetas? Just based off his numbers, since I can’t find any other info on him, he looks like a strike throwing ground baller with average strikeout stuff. I’m not sure on the ground baller part, since I can’t find those numbers anywhere; I’m just basing it off his fantastic HR rates in the minors. He seems like the perfect option for the #5 spot in the rotation.

I actually had words with Penny during this game. Penny gave up 2 HRs in the top of the first to Winn and BLB and threw the water jug in the dugout after. My father and I were sitting in the dugout seats next to the away ondeck circle and when Penny came on deck in the top of the second I ragged on him saying that he threw the water jug nearly as far as the two home runs went. He responded with “You could probably hit me tonight with how my f-ing shoulder feels tonight”… we had a couple little banters back and forth after that during the game and ever since I just see him as a complainer.

A vote for Martinez over Pucetas
He’s the best they have above High-A and deserves a shot for the 5 slot. And a ground-ball pitcher as well. They need to sign Beimel and maybe Eyre.
I am still intrigued by Beltre at 3B and/or Blalock at 1B as one-year options to get us to 2010, since Furcal and probably Hudson have been priced out of our range, and we have internal options up the middle whose offensive shortcomings would be offset by power at the corners. I would trade Bengie if I could and go with Pablo, but keep Winn until the deadline.

On Infield offense: You see the glass as half empty. I see the glass as working towards the danger of being half full . For the first time in years. To be fair I’ll be happy with better then average Infield production on either side of the ball.

I hate it when Grant is wrong.
I’m not that concerned about the rotation. Lincecum, Cain, Sanchez and Zito are fine as the first four, and if nothing better comes along, Pat Misch/Noah Lowry/waiver pickups can compete for the last spot. I’m not saying that’s a contending rotation, but I think it’s adequate for now.
My top priority would be an infielder, one who plays either up the middle or at third. Rafael Furcal, J.J. Hardy and Brandon Wood are my current favorites to target. Maybe Adrian Beltre as a free agent next year.
by Dan from NM on Nov 8, 2008 12:57 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
Lincecum, Cain, Sanchez and Zito are fine as the first four
See, I don’t really believe that. Lincecum and Cain are fine as the first two. They’re great as the first two. Almost any team would be thrilled to have them as the first two.
Sanchez is a giant (Giant?) question mark. He might be very good, or he might be awful. Remember, for every Johan Santana who realizes his potential there are fifty Brett Tomkos who have all the talent in the world and can never put it together. The team hasn’t helped Sanchez by jerking him around so much, but what’s done there is done. He hasn’t shown he can perform at a high level over more than half a season. Let’s see that before he’s Ace Number Three.
Barry Zito is awful and will continue to be awful. He improved in the second half last year too. The difference is that he was worse in the first half this year, so he looked better. He is not fine in any spot in the rotation.
My current Interwebs obsession is pretty awesome. Also, my website is called ChatterBalks Dot Com. It's not being updated right now. Hope for more at your own risk.
by groug on Nov 8, 2008 1:33 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
No real disagreements here… Sanchez would be best slotted as an intriguing #4, and Zito pitches like a #5, if that. We are a pitcher away from have an elite-level rotation. We are four hitters away from having an elite-level lineup, so that should probably take precedence.
Given the actual array of FA talent, though, I more or less agree with Grant. The commodity we need most — decent infielders — is in short supply, and the commodity we need least — decent starting pitching — is available in abundance. Given the landscape, we should be looking to sign arms and trade for bats.
by onlxn on Nov 8, 2008 2:04 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
honestly, i think we should stay away from FA this year (and possibly next) with the one exception being possibly Sabathia. Sabathia would let us slot sanchez as #4 and zito as #5, and eventually as a bullpen guy once alderson is ready. It also gives us the chance to trade one of our pitchers, most preferrably sanchez if he improves next season, for cheaper, younger hitting. A rotation of Lincecum, Cain, Sabathia, and Alderson (i’m expecting alderson in 2010, bumgarner 2011) and some fifth starter in 2010 with our young hitters starting to filter through and a hitter or two from the sanchez trade would be pretty dominant
