Community Prospect List
So, I got this idea from other places around here, specifically Minor League Ball and I think Athletics Nation, and I thought it would be something fun to do that would break up the monotony of the rosterbation posts. Basically, the idea is that we go through and vote on our top prospects from #1 to #whatever-we-feel-like to create an McC Community Prospect List. I don't think anyone did this last year. If someone did, I apologize if I'm stepping on any toes.
Not only will it be fun, but I think it will be a good way for all of us to learn more about the prospects in our system and spark some debate. My goal is to have a little blurb on each player in the poll which would include their stats at various levels/ages along with hopefully some basic scouting and background info on them. That second part may be a little tricky to come by, as some of that info isn't easily found. Hopefully people here will be able to help fill in the gaps. The first few guys should be relatively easy to find info on, but as we get down into the teens it will certainly get a bit more interesting.
So, this post is created for three purposes:
- To gauge interest.
- To see if there are any suggestions on how to do this better.
- To try to get the candidates for the first poll sorted out.
#1 will be handled in poll form. #2 will be handled in the comments. Please give me any suggestions/comments/ideas. As for #3, I figure the initial list should include MadBum, Hardly Know 'Er, T2, and AnVil. Please let me know if any others should be added.
Oh...uh...trade Matt Cain for John McCain. He's a good buy-low candidate and could provide some veteran leadership.

This would be..
Just Giants prospects right? I think it could be something to do over the winter. Once we get the list done we could also do a spotlight post for every prospect, listing their numbers and accumulating any scouting reports for discussion. I’d be in for participating in that. I’d be in for helping with that too.

Yup, just Giants. Help would be most appreciated as this is a sort of large undertaking.

24 hour limit...
…before declaring a winner and moving on to the next prospect.
Additional people for the next vote can be nominated in the comments section.
One prospect per day, top-30 gets us to the winter meetings. Brilliant!

24 hours might be a little fast, but maybe not. I figured we could play it by ear as we go along so some votes take a day and some take 2-3.

100% agree with this.

Depends on the results.
But we’d have to see what happens. We’ve got 4 months until spring training heats up and if we do 30 prospects that’s more than enough time to do a few days per poll too.

Excellent Idea, Excellent Idea, Excellent Idea, Excellent Idea, Excellent Idea, and oh Excellent Idea. Love it, great to keep us busy during the offseason.

I’m in, this is great idea, thank you for bringing it up. Maybe i’m behind the curve, but what are we doing for the definition of a prospect? for instance, would John Bowker and Nate Schierholtz be considered prospects?
Todd Jennings: If he's on the DL, he can't suck as much, right?
Prospects..
Generally they are confined by 130 AB, 50 IP, or 45 days on the active roster before September 1. That’s the limit for rookies in the majors. Nate and John would not qualify after this season. Pablo is also off the tables, but Ishikawa is still eligible to be rookie of the year next year so he’d be a “prospect.”

We'd have to..
Get a list together of who will be eligible.

I have a list...
I’ll post it below.

I think Nate would still be a rookie then; he got about 100 ab’s in 2007, and he wasn’t called up until September this year.

Nate got 75 AB’s this year…i’m not sure if they add up over consecutive years though

but they were all as a september callup this year, so they wouldn’t count; its kinda the same thing as Pablo.

45 days on the active roster, so nevermind

The September part...
Only applies to the 45 days. AB or IP are totals.

also, how many days did Bocock spend on the roster? could we include Bocock at #30 on the list just on principle?

I believe..
He’d still be able to be included. He had below the minimum AB and he was only on the roster from March 30 – May 9

First hand info
If there are 1 or hopefully more fans from the city’s where our minor league teams are they volunteer to do prospect reports on the games they attend.
Anyone can read a game recap and I know we are not scouts but I bet the reports would good.
List of nominees
This is what Baron and I are using as Nominees for our Top 50 list this offseason. Yes, it’s a lot, but I like being thorough. :) I apologize for the length. If I did somehow miss someone, please do post with it. It’s easy for players to fall through the cracks.
I use BA’s standard, which is the 130 AB or 50 IP, but ignoring days on the roster.
My nominations for the #1 spot are marked with an asterisk.

Problems? Or am I missing something..
Alex Hinshaw 78 days of service time before September 1.
Steve Holm would have…over 70 days of service time before September 1.
Ivan Ochoa would have about 50 days of service time.
Sergio Romo would have 50-55 days of service time.
Billy Sadler would have 60+ days of service time.
Merkin Valdez would have 70+ days of service time.
All of the players are within the AB/IP limits though.

I was thinking the same thing too but then I saw:

Ohhh
Right that reading thing…

I liked
I liked the idea they used over at Minor League Ball where they started out with a list of 10 players for the #1 pick, then added one player to the list for every player chosen.
By the way, that list incredibly enough wound up with Madison Bumgarner, Tim Alderson, Buster Posey and (here is the surprise to me) Angel Villalona in the top 25 prospects in baseball.
Off the top of my head, I would think a list of say those four plus Conor Gillaspie, Rafael Rodriguez, Roger Kieschnick, Alex Hinshaw, Sergio Romo and Billy Sadler might make ten to start with. I’m sure I probably left someone deserving out, but that list would at least be close for a place to start. Makes it a little simpler to focus and draws the process out for long enough to properly appreciate it.
Valdez
If Merkin Valdez qualifies, I would replace one of the last three pitchers in the group with him. Kyle Nicholson and Brandon Crawford might be other possibilities.
“I apologize for the length.”
No worries — the girth more than makes up for it.
