San Francisco Giants: Offseason Outlook, Part XVIILCMCSMCC$X of CCVCLMMMLVCCX
Between Andrew Baggarly here and John Shea here, there's a lot of petrol for the rumor Fiat. Some thoughts in nugget format, trying to keep pace with the nuggety goodness of both articles:
- The names this offseason -- Orlando Hudson, Rafael Furcal, Adam Dunn, Mark Teixeira -- beat the hell out of the Joe Crede-types from last winter. Unfortunately, they also all make more sense than the Aaron Rowand-type the Giants actually ended up with. Still...baby steps.
- For the past three offseasons, Brian Sabean brought the ladle of center fielder stew to his lips and said, "Hmm. Needs more center fielder." But Sabean's approach to this offseason makes sense. Help us all, his approach makes sense. The ostensible plan is to get two additional infielders and slide Pablo Sandoval over where he's needed. It's a novel idea. I'm in.
- Kevin Pucetas could jump from the Cal League to the rotation. The organization's faith in Pucetas might explain why the Giants were willing to let Kevin Correia go, but then why wouldn't they give Pucetas a taste of the upper minors last season? Because, heck, I would have thought Ben Snyder would have been on a similar path until he was destroyed in Connecticut, so I'm not exactly overflowing with confidence that Pucetas can even be a passable innings-eater right off the bat.
- And suddenly, after reading this in Baggarly's post, I feel less crazy: "And after watching Rowand play defense last season, scouts were telling me they felt Randy Winn was actually a better center fielder." Dang, what a pointless signing for the Giants.
Inspired by only the names in these two articles, allow me to rosterbate guiltily:
LF - Fred Lewis
2B - Orlando Hudson
RF - Randy Winn
1B - Adam Dunn
3B - Pablo Sandoval
C - Bengie Molina
CF - Aaron Rowand
SS - Manny Burriss
Guhhhh....I feel so dirty. There's no way I can do that again for at least another three days. But danged if that ain't a much better lineup than we had a right to expect last April. And Hudson's silly-good defense makes up for Big Donkey's iron glove at first.
Comment starter: Anything of interest in the above articles.

I liked this from Shea’s piece:
Asked if Cain is untouchable, Sabean said, “Yes. Clubs know that. That hasn’t necessarily discouraged clubs from inquiring or making suggestions of offers. But we don’t see anything out there that gives us a net gain by losing him.”
I have an irrational love of Matt Cain the pitcher and I don’t want to see him leave. Plus, what would I do with my Natto-designed Superwonderful shirt if Cain were traded?
I haven’t been able to watch a lot of baseball the last 10 years, so take what I comment on with a grain of salt, but I’ve always liked Hudson. Just checked his stats though and it’s interesting to note his OPS+ only broke 100 after he moved to the NL in ’06. Before then he was consistently below league average (97, 87, 98, 91).
Noonan. Nooooonan!

It is a lot easier for the front office to go wrong moving Cain then it is to holding on to him. And that’s true if the Front office is geniuses wise men. Just saying.

Pucetas
He probably wasn’t advanced last year because he got hurt. He’s going to be a solid innings eater I think. Probably what the Giants hoped they were getting with Correia when they drafted him except he didn’t have the command to stay in a rotation.

“I would have thought Ben Snyder would have been on a similar path until he was destroyed in Connecticut, so I’m not exactly overflowing with confidence that Pucetas can even be a passable innings-eater right off the bat.”
I know this is only reasonable, and normally I’d agree, but something happened when I saw Pucetas pitch in the Future’s Game this year. I don’t know exactly what it was, but the next thing I knew I was waking up in the parking lot of an Applebee’s in Charleston, South Carolina, buck naked and covered from head to toe in Crisco. I could only be sure of one thing: That Kevin Pucetas was going to be a quality 3rd or 4th starter in the big leagues.
Sure, he was only topping out at 91, and didn’t appear to have one devastating pitch, but what I saw was great command and movement on three pitches. In my mind, that’s a more promising make-up for a quick call up than a blazing fastball and no command (though clearly a lower ceiling).

Well, there’s “good” ideas, and then there’s “great” ideas. Nobody thinks this is a great idea. But, given the options available to us, and unless he is Dave-Kingman-bad defensively, then 3B is the logical place for him if we don’t trade away Bengie Molina. There just aren’t any good great 3B out there that we could obtain at a price lower than $Lincecum. Firstbasemen are actually obtainable (recent SF history not withdstanding), and although I have a very low opinion of Adam Dunn, even he would be an hitstorical improvement for the Giants at 1B. Teixeira, of course, even better. I would actually prefer we give Ishikawa a chance to claim the spot, but then I’m a wild-eyed optimist who refuses to take his meds, so what do I know?

I always thought it was interesting that a Bellarmine grad would end up at Miami. I know it’s a great baseball school, but it looks to me that Pat majored in baseball in HS and college.
Not that there’s anything wrong with that, I just think of the reputation of the Miami football program…I doubt they’re recruiting at the nation’s top Prep Schools.

can someone explain this quote from the Shea article?
“We have a list of very definitive untouchables for various reasons,” Sabean said. “After that, if someone wants to get creative and we could find a way to do something, even if it takes more than one prospect, we’re willing to do it.”
Is he essentially undermining his own definition of “untouchable”, or am I just reading it wrong?

whereby Sabean effectively undermines the meaning of “untouchable”. I guess he wouldn’t be alone there. I suppose I should know by now that “untouchable” really means “you can’t touch him unless you give me your first born son”, but it still irritates me that they use the word.

between Adam Dunn or Kevin Millar & a kick in the head, I’d take Kevin Millar & a kick in the head.

I’ve been rosterbating like this:
B Furcal, SS
L Lewis, LF
B Hudson, 2B
R Molina, C
B Sandoval, 3B
B Winn, RF
R Rowand, CF
L Ishikawa, 1B
I like Grant’s suggestion, too, but the defense would be brutal at first and third.
by Dan from NM on Nov 6, 2008 11:16 AM PST reply actions 0 recs
yeah, who says we need the big thumper! With Furcal, we can run! We can run with Lewis! That O-Dog’ll be runnin’ too! And then, WAIT. Hold on everyone. Back to your stations. Slow it all down. Big Money’s up.

Big Money comes up and knocks a bases clearing single into triples alley. That works for me.

Dan, I’m assuming B Sandoval in Pablo’s better-fielding, slimmer, better-hitting brother that the Giants have been secretly grooming to take over thirdbase??

best part of the Bags Article:
–One name that I expect to be discussed on some level: Aaron Rowand. A number of teams, including the Yankees and White Sox, would be interested. And it’s reasonable to believe the Giants could get a trade partner to take a major share of Rowand’s hefty contract — especially after the Brewers surprisingly picked up Mike Cameron’s $10 million option, reinforcing the market for center fielders.
it almost seems like, with P Mags out of the picture, the real Sabes is back. Time, of course, will tell.

the more I think about it
the less likely it seems that Rowand is going anywhere. I suppose you could entice the Yanks if they get desperate – though they are now in on Mike Cameron – but the Pale Hose want someone with speed…

Last I checked
The Brewers exercised their option on Mike Cameron.

You mean there is a huge market for center fielders. You Brian Sabean are a genius. Well Played.

Sandoval
I’m still not sold on him at a position other than catcher. He has the worst strike zone discipline in baseball (most likely to swing at a pitch out of the zone). Granted he’s very young and could pan out to be a Hall of Fame caliber player. But a position that fails to utilize his ability to throw out a base stealers will seriously take away from his value.

The number 7 topic in their top 10 offseason ‘hot topics’ is “How will the Yankees respond after missing the playoffs?” Last time I checked, 21 other teams didn’t make the playoffs also.

I especially enjoy the parts where Rohlinger is our everyday 3B and the ESPN.com gods ate up Bengie (wouldn’t that be tough to do? even if they are internet gods, they would have to have huge mouths…)

so essentially, ESPN writes about how the Giants are in a youth movement and decides to exclude quite possibly THE key component of this youth movement. hmm…

I like this lineup better:
LF – Fred Lewis
2B – Orlando Hudson
RF – Randy Winn
1B – Pablo Sandoval
3B – Adrian Beltre
C – Bengie Molina
CF – Aaron Rowand
SS – Manny Burriss
less pop, but much better defense. Of course, what we’d have to give up to get Beltre is another question. It is likely too much. I would love to see Hudson playing here, however.

Not really relevant to the above article but this comment was on the Giants’ homepage under the Romo article that appeared recently:
To rebuild, Giants need to trade anybody and everybody with apparent value. Lincecum. Cain. Wilson. Sandoval. Lewis. Trade for top prospects. Bench the veterans. Keep players with no apparent value like Romo and Schierholtz. That is how the Giants can be competitive in less than 5 years.
Made me laugh, just thought I’d share the mirth.

And when the prospects mature into good players? Trade them for even more prospects.
And when those prospects mature into good players? Trade them for even more prospects.
At the proposed rate, the Giants would have 1,341 prospects by the year 2042. You would have to bench players like Brian McCann to start players like Joe Mauer.
It can’t lose.
