Election Projection Thread
We can do this, right? The election considered as sport, not as politics?
Take a stab at predicting the results in the following categories:
1. Electoral vote
2. Popular vote, in percentages
3. Senate breakdown (currently 49-49-2)
4. House breakdown (currently 235-199 with one vacant seat)
Tiebreaker: total number of votes cast
Everyone chip in 100 McCovey Bucks, Lyle will tally up the results,* and whoever comes closest scoops the pot.

That’s all I’ll be doing at work, starting at 4am Central Time tomorrow. I might as well have some fun in my free time.

The most important day in our history?
Our meaning homo sapiens. I imagine the dinosaurs noticed when the meteor hit…that was pretty important.
Anyway, I’ve been giving it a lot of thought and thought there are many important dates in our history, I am pretty sure this is the biggest one. Never has there been more focus from the entire world, at the same time, on a single thing.
We have had wars, but communication was much slower and so when major events happened, the news filtered out slowly. There is no slow any more. Everyone everywhere (mostly) knows what is going on. Come 7 or 8 PST there will be a worldwide celebration.
I feel so grateful to be alive on this day, back in San Francisco (I just moved back from the dreaded OC), and having the clarity of mind to vote for Obama.
And:
EV: 406 to 132. I think Obama will pick up GA, MT, ND, MO AND AZ today. And hold all the others he currently leads.

I’d put the Apollo 11 mission above this election.
by Lars The Wanderer on Nov 4, 2008 10:25 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I understand what you are saying.
I think you missed my point about the rest of the world focusing on the US. Also, we have much better communication now. Though, many people watched the moon landing, i’d wager it is a small percentage compared to the number of people throughout the entire world who are riveted on this election.
by positiveuphemism on Nov 4, 2008 10:29 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
The Apollo 11 mission was a US event that captured worldwide attention. It was watched live all over the world non-stop for the entire length of the mission. It still stands as the pinnacle of mankind’s achievements.
I understand everyone’s exuberance over this election. Hell, I am a pretty happy camper right now myself. But I believe a little perspective is in order. This day, while historic, will be forgotten about when the next American Idol is chosen. The world is a different place now. Attention spans are shorter. I expect the world’s reaction to this election to be something like, “Obama won? Cool! Now how do I earn my next (applicable currency unit)?”

Why are commercial breaks ~6-7 minutes long?
That’s our attention span. And it’s decreasing each generation. soon we’ll have 10 second commercials for every 30 seconds of TV.

Except back in the day commercial breaks were only 2 minutes long according to Chuck Woolery.
Speed, defense... and an almost fanatical devotion to getting picked off.
by SF Pete on Nov 4, 2008 1:36 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
That used to be an FCC rule – no more than 2 consecutive minutes. You had to separate commercial breaks by some kind of program content (to the frustration of rookie news producers around the US, who would let their show go long, then want to cram two breaks together to make up for lost time).

I don’t if I’d put the launch of Netscape at the top of the list, though. Important, yeah, but no more so than a dozen other watershed moments in the computer industry.
The 2000 election was a lot more important in retrospect than it seemed in the days leading up.

Number of people watching = important?
I think your equation is a bit off. People love spectacle (which this is) but spectacle does not equal importance.
Plus, there’s always people like me who will deliberately ignore the media bloviation, and just wait until tomorrow when every will tell me who got elected. It isn’t that I don’t care, I just don’t see why knowing late at night is somehow better than knowing the next morning.

It’s definitely one of the tightest. I’d put North Carolina in the tossup category too, though my suspicion is it’ll go for Obama. He’s slightly ahead in most of the polls there, and in the primary season, he outperformed the polls by wide margins in southern states with large black populations.

We still have, I believe, six parties on the ballot: Democrats, Republicans, Greens, Libertarians, Peace & Freedom, and American Independent. Who’re running Alan Keyes.

bob barr = asshat, not libertarian.
For people who who have known about bob barr for more than a month, he is a hypocrite, rightwing asshat, NOT a virtuous libertarian. When he was in Congress, he was a co-sponsor of and vicious advocate for the Defense of Marriage Act, which denied equality of benefits for people in same-sex relationships rather than marriages. Think what you want of that, but it’s NOT Libertarian: true libertarians believe this is nothing for the government to get involved in. He is for every single anti-abortion legislation AND an amendment to the US Constitution to ban abortion. Again, think whatever you want about abortion, but banning it is NOT Libertarian, and amending the Constitution to LIMIT freedoms of people is not libertarian.
He would annually file a motion in the House to impeach Bill Clinton… BEFORE Monica. It was just foil-hat insanity.

whether or not he follows libertarian “rules” doesn’t affect the fact that I’d vote for him for the stances he’s taken. Not being a democrat myself, if Obama was for things like lower taxes, and less government programs, I may feel inclined to vote for him.
If you’re accusing him of being hypocritical, then I can’t really argue with that since I don’t really know anything about him other than what he’s spoken of during this race.

Exit polls made things look better for Kerry than they should’ve in 2004, but there weren’t incorrect network calls made based on them – for that, you have to look back to Florida in 2000.
In any case, Rode Island, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, and DC are all Democratic strongholds on the Presidential level. Even if this were an election where McCain was expected to win big, Obama would almost certainly carry those states.

I think after the initial “hey look our VP is a woman, maybe we’ll sway some left-wingers”, most Republicans came to the realization that she has even less experience than Obama, and is too easily mocked to make a serious run at the White House.
And by the way, I don’t listen to political TV, it disgusts me. I am just a believer that higher taxes for businesses and a higher minimum wage reduces the jobs available.

The national unemployment rate is basically set by the Fed plus or minus a random error.
You aren’t likely to see marginal tax rates high enough to affect National employment in the foreseeable future. And Obama’s economic team is made up of University of Chicago guys who are very knowledgeable about the effects of marginal taxes on economic growth.

When the country was first founded, less populated states fear that they would have little voice in national politics. Both the electoral college and the apportionment of the Senate are designed to give smaller states just a little extra pull.
I’m not sure using the popular vote would be such a bad idea either, but that’s the rationale.
by oldjacket on Nov 5, 2008 8:25 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I guess I just don’t see how a state like Montana, for example, gets much of a voice in the electoral college either. Just 3 electoral votes may be slightly more of a voice than they might get in a popular vote, but it seems like the lesser states are pretty much brushed aside as unimportant anyway.

Hmm, let’s see. If you’re the Republicans, you’ve got:
- The most unpopular president in the history of opinion polls
- Massive losses to the Democrats in terms of party identification and voter registration
- A candidate who large portions of your base hate
- A running mate who your base loves, but who has a net negative approve/disapprove rating, especially among swing voters
- An economic mess, and your candidate has said he doesn’t no much about the economy, and that the economy is strong
- An unpopular war started by a President from your party
- A huge fundraising disadvantage
- An election cycle where you’re playing defense in both houses of Congress
All those factors definitely should’ve pointed to a huge McCain victory. It must’ve been the media!

You are right in your snarkiness
But even putting all those things aside, I think it’s pretty clear the media, other than Fox News, is very left-leaning. I wouldn’t go as far as saying they won the election for Obama, but they do have an influence, however small it may be.

I think you’ve got Fox on the right and MSNBC on the left, and the rest of the mainstream media is pretty close to the middle. If that remaining media leans slightly left, I think it’s more than balanced out by the preponderance of far-right talk radio.
I don’t buy that the study that concluded there were more negative stories about McCain indicates media bias. I think the McCain folks generated a fair amount of negative stories for themselves with their leaks, internal squabbling, attack-oriented campaining and tendency to be more loose with the facts.
Yes we did!

George Stephanopolis alone
puts ABC nearly as far to the left as MSNBC. That a former Clinton aide is supposed to be giving unbiased coverage irks me (although not as much as letting the little snot moderate a debate).
I think you’re right about the McCain “strategy” being a negative campaign — they did too much of it themselves to be blaming the media for that. However, negativity came from the Obama camp as well (and has been coming from both sides in every election since I can remember). It’s politics, so you have to expect negative stories, and I didn’t really understand all the uproar over McCain doing it, since everyone usually does.

by UnleashTheGore on Nov 5, 2008 3:03 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Maybe the fact that he promised he wasn’t going to run a negative campaign had something to do with it.
As for Stephanopolis, I think he’s just one of many “leaning” pundits and there are plenty that lean right. I don’t watch the broardcast networks much, but CNN alone has Ed Rollins, Alex Castellanos, Bay Buchanan, Leslie Sanchez , Bob Bennett and that Amy whatsherface.
Yes we did!

I’m okay with claiming that the media is biased (though I have my doubts about that), I just don’t want to hear any Republicans blaming the media for the loss.
Republicans have done pretty well for themselves in the presidency since the seventies, so if there is some massive bias to the media, then it doesn’t have much effect on voting outcomes.
Conservatives blaming the media (which they certainly know how to play) makes me want to call the wahmbulance.

I think calling the media left leaning (or very left leaning) in your case has made the media more conscious about how it goes about reporting, and I think some of that criticism is due, due to the fact that after Watergate, every reporter wanted to be Woodward and Bernstien, and it got a little nutty after a while with that. But in recent years, it has been more fair, but the GOP have continued to maintain this “liberal media” narrative in order to have the media second guess themselves and be tougher on Dem candidates while going softer on GOP candidates. But we all should realize that we all have our own point of view we bring in to any story we see covered, and it is perhaps our own bias, rather than the media, that comes into play when judging coverage. ‘Cause I have seen it on both sides, rabid Dems foaming at the mouth over so-and-so not reporting about this or that that mirror rancor coming from the GOP perspective when they see something they don’t agree with.

Aside from Faux News,
which I don’t consider a legitimate news organization, the mainstream media is biased towards whatever will bring in the most ratings. Sure, you can point out individuals that are liberal or conservative. However, the mainstream media is corporate controlled, and everything is about profit. On some subjects they lean to the left, and on others they tend to lean right. I think that this reflects what the majority opinions tend to be on those subjects, more than anything else. Itās all about bringing in the max ratings, and not upsetting the status quo. If that wasn’t true, we wouldn’t be constantly inundated by the constant barrage of completely unimportant bull shit, such as what was happening with Paris Hilton or Britney Spears.
I think that the main reason Obama got more press was because he is a much more interesting person. His story is unique, his campaign and accomplishments are unprecedented, and there was obviously much more enthusiasm towards his campaign worldwide. This interest wasnāt because of any media bias, any more than Bushās extraordinarily low approval ratings were the mediaās fault.

Fox news lost me about 6 years ago. I had jury duty. Fox News was on in the jury room. This was the day that old guy had a heart attack or a seizure or whatever and plowed into the market/pedestrians down in southern california. Fox kept showing live feeds from the area, and the voice over kept going on and on about how it was a terrorist attack. Great reporting guys. That I correctly called 49 of the 50 states – only missed Indiana. I also missed the popular margin by 1% – it was 7, and I guessed 6. I haven’t been wrong on any of the Senate races that have been called so far, though it looks like I (and everyone else) was probably wrong on Ted Stevens. And I may or may not have been right about Coleman winning in Minnesota – that’s going to a recount.
