OT - TV Shows to watch
So I like TV dramas/comedies/animation/etc and for whatever reasons the TV gods seem intent on killing off/canceling my favorites. I’m looking for something new and exciting that I’ve yet to try out, and who knows maybe one of you smart McC posters has something I should try out. I’m listing my favorites (in no particular order) below, so feel free to try any of them out.
- The Wire
- The Sopranos
- Deadwood (though if I ever meet David Milch, I’m kicking him in the nuts repeatedly for not finishing the show)
- Rome
- Rescue Me (1st two seasons are excellent, then they realized they could pull in female viewers by getting rid of the alcoholism, violence, and hallucinations).
- Battlestar Galactica (new series)
- Dexter
- The Shield
- Brotherhood
- Entourage (I guess…though a show called Arie Gold might have me more enthusiastic)
- Six Feet Under
- Top Gear
- Oz
- Simpsons (first 10 years), South Park, The Boondocks
- True Blood
- Scrubs
- Star Trek TNG/DS9
- Firefly
- Lost
- HBO’s Miniseries (John Adams, Band of Brothers, and the upcoming Saddam Hussein miniseries)

Mad Men – the best show on tv. Start at the beginning.
Damages – on FX. The first season was awesome. I don’t have the same feeling about the upcoming second season.
Friday Night Lights – so, so good. Unrealistic but it has extremely hot women and football. Good acting as well.
Big Love – You will be exhausted after watching these shows. I could never have three wives.
to round it out…….
It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia – the critics have called it “Seinfeld on crack”. More like acid speedballs. I love this show.

what’s the attraction to big love? i’ll freely admit I haven’t given it a chance so I know next to nothing except bill paxton should be required to say “Game over man!” over and over again.

it doesn't really focus on the bigamy
The show has great plot lines and fantastic characters. For the most part it shows the dark side and most of the struggles of having multiple wives. Give it a chance and you will be hooked.

ahem, maybe I should say more than just the title. it’s a sitcom about a cockney guy and welsh gal getting married and their families meeting, moving in together, being bored at home without work as your spouse goes to work, etc. it runs in the vein of “the office” shows – low key poking fun at real life, with a handful of over the top characters, but without the faux-documentary interviews. Thanksgiving, BBC-America had it on marathon and it totally hooked me.

Love the show, unfortunately it’s the last season. The only thing that bothers me is that the writers use every episode to state their political agenda, and even though I usually agree with their political views, I want entertainment and escapism from the real world when I watch series like these, not more politics.

The only thing that bothers me is that the writers use every episode to state their political agenda
So you love it for what – it’s one and a half dimensional characters? The surprisingly predictable story lines? Candice Bergen’s terrible acting? The fact the half the cast is changed every season? IMO, the political arguments are the only thing that save this show. Yes, they are forced into each episode, and they are generally one sided (which can be very annoying, especially when you don’t agree with them), but at least they’re pretty intelligent, definitely more intelligent than anything you’d find on The Daily Show or Colbert or anything like that. Without the political discussion, it’s just a bad Ally McBeal knockoff. At least this way its a bad Ally McBeal knockoff with a pretty interesting monologue once every few episodes.

Ally McBeal knockoff
is there a co-ed bathroom?
OT, it seems the cast of Ally McMeal have done well for themselves. Flockhart has Brothers and Sisters, Jane Krakowski has 30 Rock, Portia De Rossi had Arrested Development, some new show, and Ellen, Courtney Thorne Smith had According to Jim (wouldn’t ever watch it, but it did have longevity at least), Lucy Liu was catapulted into stardom… Even the kid who came on during the last season as McBeal’s kid went on to star in Heroes and Remember the Titans and stuff. Pretty impressive, really. They even had Taye Diggs, Jon Bon Jovi, and Iron Man!

At the moment, I watch:
Heroes – AWFUL but it makes me lol.
House – I’m about ready to give up on this.
Pushing Daisies – ;_______;
Life – not as interesting as it was last year for some reason
The Office (US) – I’m enjoying this season
30 ROCK – ♥ ♥ ♥
Dexter – Best show on tv right now imho
I’m also catching up on Psych through Netflix (1/4 of the way through S2) and it’s stupid fun. And Gus is awesome.
And it wasn’t as good as Life on Mars (UK) but I’m looking forward to series 2 of Ashes to Ashes, whenever that’s going to happen.

the TIVO thing sort of makes it hard though. You think you can talk about the show after it airs, but so many people don’t see it until days or weeks afterwards. Maybe President Obama’s first order of business instead of this economy or Iraq thing is to address correct TIVO or In Demand etiquette.

Sons of Anarchy, The Shield
Watched the first few episodes, and found it compelling, save for the pretty-boy lead. That guy simply is wrong for that role. Katey Segal is terrific, and her character is very rich.
Vic Mackey. What can one say? One of televisions greatest characters, a hurricane let loose on the streets of Los Angeles, now reduced to wearing a funny little suit. Do your penance, Vic…three years for the Feds. C’mon man, we’re all pullin’ for you.

Others have already mentioned some shows I watch, so here’s my recommendation.
The Big Bang Theory – I just recently started watching this and find it quite entertaining. The laugh track can get annoying, but it is pretty funny, especially for a nerd like me.
Some cartoons I watch:
Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends
Chowder
The Misadventures of Flapjack
These three shows have sharp writing and clever jokes that older folks can enjoy.

I watched the pilot episode, and that told me all I needed to know about the show. All the jokes seemed to be mailed in, the premise seemed lazy… I was completely unimpressed. I kind of assumed that TBBT was just getting the ‘Til Death treatment from CBS. You know, where the show is obviously beyond awful, but the year it came out saw such a creative drought for the network that they renewed it just so the year didn’t look like a total wash. I honestly didn’t expect it would be a watched show. And the fact the show is watched by you and Natto… I guess there’s got to be some decent quality there after all!

The end of each of the first three seasons has been just outstanding. When Marshall and Lily broke up, then the wedding, and the stuff with Stella was all fantastic to me.
I saw the season 4 premiere and the episode where they run into Stella at the restaurant. Robin’s part of that episode was funny but otherwise, I wasn’t impressed. I gather I’ve missed some really good episodes.

I loved H:LOTS (sounds funny to say “I love homicide”). It’s based on David Simon’s book, but he didn’t run the show the way he ran The Wire, and I think it’s different enough in feel from The Wire to be worth a look. I think Homicide is more poetic, though still gloriously grounded in the mundane details of everyday police work, and although it’s hardly a comedy it’s incredibly funny at times.
Stick to the first four seasons, though, maybe the fifth if you’re generous.

You people watching sitcoms...
420 years ago I was watching Leno monologuing on The Tonite Show…and I realized the laughter had a pattern to it.
1st joke – laughter.
2nd joke – laughter.
3rd joke – laughter , applause.
No one laughed too loud or long , and the timing was impeccable.
I then realized it was canned…and nothing’s been the same since.
The jokes they tell on your shows – they’re funny , right?
Of course they are , listen to everybody laughing at them.
That’s canned , too.
Aren’t those jokes funny enough to stand up on their own?
Why do you need to be told they’re funny?
Can’t you decide for yourself? Or do they think you’re too stupid to do that?
Like I said…nothing’s been the same since.
That’s why I watch animation – no idiot fucking laughtrack insulting my intelligence.

There are some shows I like with laugh tracks, although laugh tracks drive me crazy. Mostly they’re of the silly variety, mind you – NewsRadio, 3rd Rock from the Sun, etc. And I’ve been a fan of the tv version of M*A*S*H since I was a kid, and it had a laugh track. When I watched the DVDs, though, I always turned it off, which was a really nice special feature to have.

Sports Night
Besides being a great show, Sports Night helped kill off the laugh track. ABC insisted on giving it a laugh track over Aaron Sorkin’s objections. It didn’t work at all with the laugh track and they eventually dropped it.

The only show I care enough to watch the commercials of
(i.e. not online or via bittorrent) is House.
Monk is fun, but you have to think of it as a comedy, not a detective show.
Boston Legal— likewise, comedy, NOT law show.
I like several of the characters in Bones a lot, but the writers could do a lot more with them. Has the advantage of Michaela Conlin, who is… easy on the eyes, shall we say.

Great show!! It’s a pretty fun detective show at times. Best part about it is it’s the first detective show I’ve ever watched that doesn’t have a formula. Sometimes they show you who dunnit and how the crime was commited in the first five minutes. Many times they only show you one or the other. Sometimes they show you neither.

The best tv show ever was Freaks & Geeks. They only did 18 episodes, but it was SO FUCKING GOOD. If you haven’t seen it, it was an hour-long comedy drama about the unpopular kids in a suburban Michigan high school in 1980. It was both funny and sad, which a lot of shows have done over the years, but Freaks & Geeks did it so much better.
Most of my other favorites have been mentioned. I did also really like Sports Night, which really isn’t about sports, although there was an episode that involved the Bobby Thomson homer. It was created by Aaron Sorkin before he did The West Wing, and starred Peter Krause before he was in Six Feet Under and Felicity Huffman before she was in Desperate Housewives.

Most of my favorite shows have already been named here, but one that’s been left out is ‘Breaking Bad’ on AMC. It’s only had one season so far, but it was good enough to win the lead actor (Bryan Cranston) an Emmy, and has been called the best show on TV by several critics (including Stephen King).

If you like humor, spy stuff (less hardcore than like, 24, but it’s not fluffy in the action department), and hot women, you’ll enjoy Chuck. The main female spy is ridiculously hot.

always a daunting thought.
That said I really like Chuck. I say that because I’ve been watching for a season+, and I actually still enjoy the little running jokes, and plot lines. I’m a big Adam Baldwin fan from his Firefly days, so that may help.

I watch quite a few...
GUILTY PLEASURES
Chuck (Sometimes the dialogue makes me want to puke, but it’s funny and hip)
CSI (I usually watch this en masse when I’m sick)
Heroes (I had to stop watching, because it was just getting ridiculous)
JUST DAMN GOOD
Dexter – The very best show on TV, no doubt. Last night’s episode was AMAZING. So dark, but so good.
House – People will disagree, but Hugh Laurie is great and I love medical dramas.
Monk – I love OCD humor mixed with homicide.
Psych – Silly, but the banter between Shawn and Gus is hilarious and intelligent.
Life – Such a fresh take on the usual crime drama.
SNL- Is still funny, no matter what the haters say. I do miss Amy, though.
Inside the NFL – Such great insults exchanged between Cris Collinsworth and Phil Simms, with Sapp and JB being amusing spectators. Smart football show.
The Office/30 Rock – My obsession on Thursday nights. They are both intelligent, hilarious and consistent. I love Kenneth from the latter and Creed from the former.
Fringe – I have been completely pulled in by the strangeness of it.
South Park – Brilliant satire. Just gets better each year.
Entourage – Jeremy Piven is my idol. Great acting, compelling plot.
Weeds – A smart pot comedy. Doug is great.
Lost – I almost gave up on it, but it sucked me back in last season. Pure escapism.
GOLDEN OLDIES (OR NOT-ON-THE-AIR-ANYMORE-IES)
Sports Night – Best pure banter I’ve ever seen. Love every episode.
Freaks and Geeks – Apatow FTW!
Pushing Daisies – So sad to see it go…Vivid colors, great acting, bizzare and beautiful.
The Fugitive – Maybe even better than the movie.

The last two season were much worse than the first three IMO, though it has more to do with the cases than the characters. I know that it’s not supposed to be that realistic, but it’s gotten completely ridiculous. I think the life saving boob job was the worst.

I felt the character interactions were becoming much too jaded
There wasn’t any room to explore anymore.
+1 on the hair thing, though. Brunette Cameron— hot. Blonde Cameron— not.
I was watching some of the old episodes over the break, and Cameron actually looked sort of Sarah Palin-y in some of them. Not that that’s a bad thing— Sarah Palin is a good looking lady, even if she’s also an insane fundamentalist nutcase imbecile— I just thought it was sorta funny.

and I’ve enjoyed it a lot this season. The political stuff was their big strength, but in the episodes I’ve seen this season there have been at least a few really good sketches, with most of the rest being decent.

If SNL
has stopped doing skits where they tell the same joke over and over again until the skit is interminally long, then maybe it has improved. But it’s been so bad for so long I have no interest in it anymore. The news was good though.

It’s been my experience that people ALWAYS say that SNL was bad before, but “is getting better.” I’ve been hearing that every year for about a decade now.
Personally, I think it might as well have died after Phil Hartman, Mike Meyers, and Dana Carvey left. It’s never been reliably good since then.

I think it got a lot better with the political coverage, but that’s because ALL comedy thrives with high profile political coverage. But it’ll probably slowly head right back on down to being the SNL crap we all got used to before, now that the election’s over.
It’s like giving a starving puppy lots of food for a few weeks (or, in this case, months). it starts to look really awesome! But then you run out of food and money to buy food (or something, so long as the analogy works) and slowly, slowly… well, you get the idea.

If you go back and watch “classic” SNL -whatever the classic SNL means to you - you will find a lot of the actual shows stink. We tend to remember classic sketches and then attribute their quality to the era in which they appear. But watch a whole show from an era you consider classic and you will find that SNL always has been and always will be uneven… but that’s sketch comedy.

Absolutely 100%. The Chase/Belushi/Radner years were good, but a lot of the stuff that wasn’t classic fell absolutely flat. Steve Martin and Buck Henry tended to lift their episodes to a really high level, but many episodes were so-so. I never thought those bees were funny.
I think the late 80s/early 90s was actually SNL’s "goldn era:
- Phil Hartman
- Dana Carvey
- Kevin Nealon
- Jon Lovitz
- Nora Dunn
- Mike Myers
- Jan Hooks
- Chris Farley
- David Spade
- Rob Schneider (from Pacifica!)

Forgot About "Sports Night"
A very good show that was well ahead of its time. Very intelligent humor.
I too have been watching “Fringe” from the beginning. It does have a cool sort of weirdness going on, and I like the randomness of the “Walter” character quite a bit. My only concern is that the show drifts into a “Lost” type of story line where nothing will ever be resolved.
