phelps gets spring training invite
According to sfgiants.com, phelps signed a minor league deal with an invite to spring training. Another decent move to kick off the offseason. Low risk, moderate reward.

I know we're all about sarchasm here...
but the fanshot police thing gets a little annoying at times.
To me, this is a topic that warrants discussion, and therefore, has a place as a fanpost.

I don’t think it’s the topic that makes it a fanshot. I think it’s the fact that raisingcain had absolutely nothing to say about it.

Noted, and understood.
Although I just hate reading a post and the first comment is “FanShot”, because I guarantee most who criticize a post for its succinctness will probably end up making a FanPost that didn’t deserve to be one anyways, yadda yadda.
Just seems overly harsh at times.

ok, i admit it
I didn’t really say anything in my hurry to post it. I thought it deserved a fanpost, and, with so little activity going on at this point in the offseason, I was more excited than normal to get it up quickly for discussion.
Personally, if there’s something fairly important going on, I prefer to see it in a fanshot, but maybe that’s not the majority opinion.

While I think it’s obvious that I prefer FanPosts that have clearly been thought out through their content, I don’t want it to seem like I’m just being an attack dog here. I do think there is value in simply letting us know that something happened when that thing is worth talking about. I’ve seen time and time again on these boards where a topic is brought to attention without either the pomp or the circumstance of in-depth, personal analysis, and the discussion still takes care of itself.
If something is worth talking about, the people here will talk about it regardless of how much the person who brought it up puts on the wire at the very first mention, and because of that there is plenty of value in simply putting something out there and then joining the fray when it happens.
I do personally prefer when FanPosts are given more time in their conception, but I don’t mean to condemn them when they aren’t. For all either of us know, if you hadn’t posted this FanPost, then nobody would have, so it is a good thing you made it. I only mean to condemn FanPosts when they are asinine. And this is, very strongly, not that.
My Dave Righetti is better than your Dave Righetti.

It's not just that...
following some basic writing rules would be nice as well. At least the first time write “Josh Phelps” instead of just “Phelps”. You will never see a journalist assume that everyone knows who you’re talking about.

The bases were drunk, and I painted the black with my best yakker. But blue squeezed me, and I went full. I came back with my heater, but the stick flares one the other way and the chalk flies for two bases. Three earnies! Next thing I know, skipper hooks me and I'm sipping suds with the clubby.

Career lines:
Josh Phelps – .273/.343/.472 in ~1400 ABs
Mike Jacobs – .262/.318/.498 in ~1500 ABs
One of these guys was just acquired for free and one of these guys will make ~3 million this year and cost an average reliever.

I’m only level 4 or 5, so I’ve just been filling in skills as needed to complete quests. But in the end, he’ll be a super-sledge-wielding, rifle-toting, paragon of justice. My 2nd play through will be the evil one. He’ll probably be some sneak/steal master with a power fist bringing surprise death to anyone who has something I want.

I think I’m a level 7 right now, maybe 8, I can’t remember. I’m playing a gun nut character with a little bit of explosives and big weapons skills mixed in. I love blasting Super Mutants in the face with my hunting rifle. I’ve played as a slightly evil character, but I’ve tended to do more good than bad.
I love the power fist (I still haven’t found it) as a weapon and I think doing a melee / hand-to-hand character as a 2nd play would be awesome.

I only played
the original fallout 1, and only a little. I am pretty much sworn off video games until my son (4) can play them with me… but I have a dream to make an ultimately-realistic MMORPg post apocalypse.
Probably not 300 years like FO3, though.. maybe 10 or 20.
Basically, you would just spend your game time looking for calories (instead of HPs you would just have a little calorie intake/burn display), or fixing stuff, or trying to farm, or trading 3 bullets for a dented can of tuna. God help you if you got into a fight… if you got a scratch, you’d have to worry about it getting infected and killing you or finding a guy with a marginally working first aid kit. The “leader board” would just be “Harvey Jenkins has survived for 455 days”
But I doubt anyone would actually play something this grim.

I think the framework for an awesome game, that I would absolutely play, is there. That’s like a more realistic survival horror. You would have to combine elements from a few games; take a little from Fallout, Animal Crossing, etc. and it could be cool. Never will happen of course, it’s probably a bit too risky to try for the companies to try.

Josh Phelps....
Next year’s Carlos Pena? You heard it here first. But if he isn’t, remember I added a question mark. Seriously, for those saying “this means McClain is out of a job” or “Ishikawa will have to platoon,” remember, this is a minor-league contract. Phelps isn’t guaranteed anything. If he hits the crap out of the ball in March, he might earn a roster spot. Might.

Fans respond! (from the comments section on sfgiants.com)
wat is the point this guy sounds like a super bum why would we sign him. o and why is this even posted like its some great trade wow its horrible giants you guys better get moving on some big free agent signings before they are all gone like every other year.
I thought we already had this guy, but his name was Scott McClain. I realize this is a low-risk signing, but what’s the point? In a perfect world this guy wouldn’t be starting at Fresno because Bowker, Sandoval, Ishikawa, and even Dan Ortmeier would all be getting time ahead of him. I realize that it’s not a perfect world, but this is the kind of thing we finally saw the Giants get away from last year. Why play the vet, who you know is only going to give you so much production, instead of the kid who might be a little worse but could be a lot better. They did a great job of letting the kids play last year (like when Bowker went 0-for a week and was still in the lineup), and I’d just hate to see them get away from that trend so quickly.

Sweet, illiterate crap on a stick…
When I was a kid I used to pray every night for a new bicycle. Then I realized God doesn’t work that way, so I stole one and prayed for forgiveness. - Emo Philips

I’m not much interested in Phelps, but this is the kind of move the Giants should be making, so I guess I’ll revel in a fleeting sense of progress until the next time Sabean denkers us.

Wait...
JOSH Phelps? THE Josh Phelps? Who are you and what have you done with Brian Sabean. No wait – don’t tell me, I’ll keep the imposter.

I prefer to remember...
the rookie Phelps who qualified at catcher and made my fantasy team unstoppable. I’ll drink the cool-aid. Seriously though, I like the low risk, high reward on this. All the AAAA people are likely to be right, but his minor league line from this last season is tantalizing. More reasonable to hope for him versus Scott McClain (forgive me Scott). What’s Phelps’ AAA to Majors transition issue? Can’t hit a curve? Drools on himself?
