Thanksgiving Menus

Grant already wrote a "Being Thankful" post, but I figured we could use a Fanpost to talk about what we're all having for Thanksgiving. What are some of your favorite/traditional dishes? Are you trying anything new this year?

We're having dinner at my grandmother's house. She always grills the turkey, which is great. I'm not sure what else she's making, although chestnut puree and cranberry sauce are traditional staples.

The last few years, for stuffing, we've been going with my wife's family's traditional stuffing - it's a sticky rice stuffing with roasted pork, dried shrimp, soy sauce, and shiitake mushrooms. It's SO GOOD, although I do sometimes miss the old cornbread oyster stuffing.

I'm making two dishes - one old, one new. The old is a dish my mom makes for Thanksgiving that was my favorite growing up - ham, sweet potato, and apple casserole. It also features chestnuts, brown sugar, and apple cider. The new is roasted cornmeal masala brussels sprouts. I made it once before, but never for Thanksgiving.

So, what are y'all having?

Every year I go with my wife and her family to the American Club here in Singapore for the mammoth Thanksgiving buffet. We eat lots of turkey, ham, stuffing, mash, five different types of pie (yes, pie!) — all the good stuff.
This year I’m on a work-related scuba diving trip at a resort in Indonesia. Last night (it’s Friday morning now) I ate shrimp cocktail, sickeningly sweet “summer” pasta, and two plates of churros. It wasn’t Thanksgiving; it was sad.

Noonan. Nooooonan!

I had one really lousy Thanksgiving in college. I went to school in New York, while my parents lived in Florida and the rest of my family in California. It was the year before I met my wife and I wasn’t able to go home. So, I was on my own, and I had planned to go buy some cranberry sauce and sliced turkey and such to at least make turkey sandwiches. But by the time I got to the supermarket in the early afternoon, it was already closed.

So, my Thanksgiving dinner was the only food I had in the cupboard – a bowl of ramen. SUCK.

Oh, and at the time, I was commuting into school from Central New Jersey. Had I been in Manhattan at that point, obviously, I could’ve done better, food-wise. But I was stuck in a nothing suburban town and nothing at all was open.

Thanksgivings alone I’ve learned pretty much suck.

Pretty standard turkey, potatoes, etc.

I am making bread pudding with a brandy sauce, though.

nothing too special or unique

-Turkey
-Honey Baked Ham
-Candied Yams
-Mashed Potatoes
-Corn Bread
-Cranberry Sauce
-Pumpkin Pie
-Pecan Pie
-Blueberry and Sour Cream Pie
-Stuffing

We went out for dinner. I’m slammed with schoolwork for the next few weeks and I didn’t have time to cook a big meal.

There was a place nearby that did the whole dinner for $15, salad/soup, bread, the full dinner, and dessert. Pretty awesome. Although my chocolate mousse is so crappy compared to my grandmother’s bread pudding.

Every year for Thanksgiving, everyone from my dad’s side of the family goes to my uncle’s house in Daly City, bringing a dish with them. My mom usually makes the turkey. We have the usual Thanksgiving items (ham, mashed potatoes, etc.), but we also have chow mein, broccoli beef, lumpia, my grandma’s glutinous rice, plus plenty of dessert. Good thing I like to eat.

There amass been plenty of articles written this spring about the stud shortstop Matt Cain and Tim Lincecum , as well as the fluid young outfielders and thirteen basemen Kevin Frandsen.

Right on

I’m 23 and live by myself so Thanksgiving is always a lonely day =(

For Christmas I go to my parent’s place but they’re always out of town for T-Day. I’m establishing a tradition of drinking a 12 pack and watching football. And eating pizza. There is worse loneliness.

by fwoty oz on Nov 27, 2008 3:58 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Next year I’m sure to be alone for Thanksgiving. I’ll be at university and my former best friends who live near campus are no longer in my life. I plan to volunteer for the holiday. So my life sucks. If I can help some other people have less sucky lives, I’ll count that as a win.

That is WAY HUGER than my plan. It is a great solution to the “being alone on a holiday” problem.

I’m just thinking it’s a semi-normal part of being a early twenties male – that you can’t always do the family thing for holidays. I feel stupid for eating pizza today but I guess it happens.

I’ll definitely look into volunteering next year (or any holiday where I’m alone). That sounds really mutually beneficial.

Well on the menu made by me was nothing..

But one of my co-workers brought in some extra food they had and so we had “thanksgiving dinner” while we were working. They basically placed an order at a local supermarket and they do all the baking and cooking and then you just have to pick it up. There was..

-sort of dry turkey
-very good ham
-good mashed potatoes (with good seasonings, don’t know what it was though)
-stuffing (oniony)

And that’s all I’ve gotten to so far. There is pie, but it’s in the fridge now for a bit later.

I'll add something in here..

Usually at home we have dried corn, which is something from the Pennsylvania Dutch area. We use Corr’s dried corn and basically a recipe on the back, but it’s very good. Of course I tried cooking it last year and I interpreted “1tbsp sugar and salt to taste” as a tbsp of both sugar and salt. It kind of turned out salty.

Like eat one kernel with a spoonful of mashed potatoes and it tasted good salty.

Mom insists on doing all the holiday cooking, partly due to her dietary restrictions [she’s over 70] but mostly due to her being stubborn. This year she wanted to do something different so we had lasagna, garlic bread, a green salad, and chocolate cake.

I cooked my first turkey this year, and it was awesome!

Stuck in Eugene because of band stuff, so I decided to try the whole cooking thing. Used the Chez Panisse brine recipe and man is it amazing. Also had potatoes, stuffing etc… but goal 1 was to make a good turkey and i succeeded.

I’m at Grandma’s house and we had Turkey, Sausage Stuffing, Brussels Sprouts, Candied Sweet Potatoes, Creamed Onions, Creamed Cauliflower, Biscuits, Cranberry Sauce, Sauteed Mushrooms, Pumpkin and Apple Pie

It was very good. Way too much food for just four people though (my grandparents, my great-uncle and I), so it looks like I’ll be bringing some back to Boston with me on the Amtrak!

I love pretty much all traditional Thanksgiving food, but I just wanted to put in a plug for pumpkin pie. Seriously, I have to say, it’s got to be the best kind of pie. I think part of it is every year you kind of forget about it, and then around halloween, suddenly (gasp!) it’s pumpkin pie time again, and there is much rejoicing. And then, right about the time you might start getting sick of it, it goes away at New Years. It’s a desert that never wears out it’s welcome and so stays delicious year after year.

Scalloped potatoes

not to mention the copious amounts of beer and wine that is consumed

Being an Italian family, we don’t do the turkey thing. Each year we do pretty much the same thing:

Lasagna
Shrimp Salad (greatest thing ever, it’s tiny shrimp with cut up avocado in a sauce made of vodka, mayo, dash of tabasco, and some other stuff that I don’t know)
Prosciutto
Smoked Salmon
Bresaola
Schiacciata
Pumpkin Cheesecake

My dad and sister do the cooking and I am not allowed near the kitchen as I’m pretty dangerous in that regard. Although, I am in charge of drinking as much beer as possible and watching football, so I have my tasks.

cousins brought a real nice jello salad with pineapple and banana. As I hang around midwesterners more, I have gotten to like jello salad at holiday meals. Our California born kids chuckle at it.
Had walnuts, raisins, apple, celery in the stuffing. I mash the potatos (yukon gold) by hand first, then with blender and very little milk.
I used to make a stir fry to balance things, but now I wait ’til Friday and people appreciate it then. Big soup tonight based on the turkey carcass.

Non-turkey Thanksgiving

I stopped eating most meats several years ago, but indulge in fish or seafood, maybe once a month. this month it was thanksgiving.

pumpkin pie from a pumpkin, not a can. it actually turned out pretty nice, not chunky or stringy.
brussel sprouts with apples. recipe from “on-demand NY1”. pretty meh.
mashed potatoes and mashed sweet potatoes. yum.
salmon with pesto mayo. better than i thought it would be.

and oh yes, tin of organic cranberry jelly – in shape of tin. divine.

It wasn't very good this year

My dad, JD and I went to the Broker in Denver because I didn’t want to bust out cooking after the year I’ve had. So I got trout, JD got filet mignon and my dad got the “traditional turkey dinner” prix fixe thinger. None of it was anything special and my trout was actually not too good at all. Everything came with some stringy-ass green beans which is pretty much the only veggie I don’t eat. Dessert and wine were good — pumpkin pie and raspberry cheesecake, and a pinot noir from Oregon. Next year I cook … I do it better than this place, which used to be the swankiest restaurant in town.
