3rd Team
Could it be us? I always thought so, Vitters just sounds so good in a Giants uniform. Maybe Timmy A or MadBum

It could be us as we have the pitching, but i’d imagine it isn’t. I’m skeptical that Sabean would want to give up Bumgarner or Alderson in a sideways move like that. Also, i’d love us to have Vitters but would you trade either for him, given that they’ve been successful at higher levels?

Didn’t the article say the Pads wanted MLB ready talent? MadBum and Tim Alderson are hardly ML ready..I’d think a team like the Angels or the Rangers, who have some ML talent to spare, would be the 3rd team.
The bases were drunk, and I painted the black with my best yakker. But blue squeezed me, and I went full. I came back with my heater, but the stick flares one the other way and the chalk flies for two bases. Three earnies! Next thing I know, skipper hooks me and I'm sipping suds with the clubby.

Would the Rangers really want to deal with the Padres after the Chris Young trade?

Alderson..
I’d call him near ML ready. Perhaps late in 2009 or by 2010.

why would we want to help the Padres?

there’s a reason intra-division trades don’t occur very often. I’m all for helping ourselves, but I’d prefer we do it without bailing out a division rival from their self-inflicted PR and player personnel problem.

On a semi-related note, the Tigers want a catcher and pitching(closer and starting)
From ESPN:
“Catcher — that’s their top priority,” said an official of one team the Tigers have talked to.
I know we want to have Bengie for a while, but would Detroit be a good trade partner? They also want pitching. I know their system is pretty depleted from last summer, but is there something here?

no
they have Rick Porcello and that’s pretty much it.

yeah, i was just thinking this earlier today, because they really could use a player like bengie, but after their big blockbuster deal for cabrera and willis last year, the farm system is pretty barren.
I’ll tell you the notion I’m starting to like: if the Red Sox do wind up signing Teixeira (a definite possibility from everything I’ve read) I’d be very much in favor of a Sanchez and Molina for Lars Anderson deal. Not sure if we’d need to throw a little more in or if they would, but that would be a nice fit for both teams, I think.

that would be one tasty deal for us
and I think they very well might do that. I doubt they’ll sign Tex, though; not with the Yanks and Angels involved. The Yankees are the Yankees and the Angels need Tex if they want to not be like the Giants. They lost far too many free agents this year and they can’t afford to lose him too.

no offense, but you’re really dreaming if you think the Giants are going to trade Bengie Molina for some prospects this offseason. It should be obvious to everyone that the Giants’ are not willing to sacrifice 2009, even if some fans believe it’s the best route to take for the future.

Actually, the most recent report from the Boston Herald
indicates that the Giants are shopping Molina to the Red Sox. What do the Sox have that would match up with our needs? Also, the Cubs are looking for an experienced lefty reliever (hello Taschner). Any ideas?

Jed Lawrie or Mike Lowell
Read somewhere that Boston could be the “mystery team” pursuing Rafael Furcal because they were not enamored with Jed Lawrie as everyday SS. Mike Lowell if the Sox pick up a large amount of the monies owed.

I'm gonna hijack my own post and put this here:
From MLBTRs
Larry LaRue writes that the Mariners could use a couple good outfielders to go along with Ichiro.
Rowand for Beltre?

Just say no
I would hate to see either Alderson or Madbum wind up pitching in our division for someone else. We have money and plenty of our own prospects, we don’t have to make risky deals like this. I doubt when Kevin Towers goes around looking for a third team to make this thing work he thinks of one of his divisional rivals to call.

Agreed
I don’t care what hitter we get back, if we help them move Peavy but give up Alderson or MadBum, that’d be just as bad.

I dunno..
If we only have to give up Alderson to get Pujols then I think I’d pull the trigger.

OK
I shouldn’t have said any hitter. I meant a prospect in the minor leagues.

What about Cain for Alderson??…wait…..

Alderson and MadBum
are worth much more to the Giants than Vitters would be. First they are further along in their development. Good pitching is a more valuable commodity than a good hitting, average fielding 3B. If the Giants were in a position where they could afford to trade either, they should receive a more established major leaguer or a can’t miss prospect in the higher minors. That said, it looks at this point at least that MadBum has the makings of a once in a decade #1 lefty starter and Timmy2 as a solid #2. Combine that with Lincecum and Cain and you get a championship caliber starting rotation. Why mess with that?
by baseballjunkie on Nov 28, 2008 9:21 AM PST reply actions 0 recs
except we have a good rotation already
and we have a GAPING hole at 3rd in our entire organization, let alone just the ML team. We have absolutely no legitimate 3B talent, and only a few good hitting prospects. We also lack Also, calling MadBum a once in a decade #1 starter would be a bit of a stretch. Most seem to think he’s a potential good #2, maybe #1 if everything goes his way, but certainly not once in a decade talent. That would be David Price you’re thinking of. And Alderson seems more of a #3 than a #2, although that could change if he continues to pitch like he did last year. But the point is our offense is anemic and needs a hitter; Alderson for Vitters is kinda lopsided, but it’s not totally laughable. If there was any way we could get Vitters, though, I’d definitely go for it.

Reading Peter Gammon’s report the Padres would get Vitters plus the young pitching from a third team. The third team then supposedly would receive players from the Padres and/or Cubbies.
