Thanksgiving
Let’s see. Is there something that Giants fans should be thankful for? Something that did or didn’t happen? Something major that would have changed life as we know it, perhaps ripping open the fabric of space and time? Hmm. Can’t think of anything off the top of my head….
Oh. Right. That.
I would like to give thanks for Tim Lincecum, Cy Young Award winner, in a Giants uniform. I would like to give thanks for Alex Rios, useful and moderately productive player, in a Blue Jays uniform.
There’s a new brand of revisionist history going around, and it posits that Lincecum-for-Rios was never on the table – that it was just wishful thinking by the Blue Jays front office and/or Toronto media. I’d like to believe that; I really would. But when you have articles that directly quote Brian Sabean and a radio interview in which Sabean talks about a potential trade at length , the conspiracy theories don’t make a lot of sense.
Alex Rios for Tim Lincecum.
Tim Lincecum for Alex Rios.
I am thankful. I am thankful. I am thankful.
If you would like to revisit the progression, here’s a primer:
- The first whiff of a rumor. It’s so, so ridiculous that it’s laughed off.
- Local confirmation of the rumor’s validity. Oh. Oh my.
- Barely concealed panic masked as incredulity. Incredulity had outrage on retainer, just in case.
- People actually arguing for the trade. KNBR listeners who called in were split down the middle.
- Actual panic masked as a response to a pro-Lincecum-for-Rios article. A response to the article from the original author. More panic.
- An eventual mea culpa from the de facto voice of the trade's supporters.
I am thankful. I am thankful. I am thankful. It just seemed like something that was worth revisiting.

Upon further review
I remember hearing that interview with Ralph and Tom and being VERY, very scared until the weekend passes and the Giants didn’t do anything foolish.
Upon listening to it again, I came away with more of a sense that trading Tim was unlikely even then.
Brian Sabean said that he didn’t think there was much of a way to “even up the deal.” At first I was thinking Travis Snider in addition to Alex Rios, but later Brian talked about a pitcher to replace Tim in the rotation. My sense is that the Giants many have been asking for Rios and McGowen for Tim and that the Blue Jays balked at giving up both relatively young players.
It also sounded as if the Giants might have traded Matt Cain for Rios, but that the Blue Jays weren’t willing to make that deal. It is possible the Giants got into their uncharacteristically well-publicized talks with the Blue Jays for two reasons:
. First, they may have been hoping the discussions would move toward Cain for Rios instead of Lincecum’s being in the deal.
. Second, as I mentioned at the time, the Giants may have publicized these talks so that if nothing came through on the trade or free agent horizons, they could point to their NOT trading Lincecum or Cain as the key “deal” they made. That would fall under the heading that sometimes the best deals you make are the ones you don’t make.

When I first looked at this post, without even seeing the “Thankful-for-no-Lincecum/Rios trade” elements of it, that’s immediately what I was thankful for, as a Giants fan.

"* Rios is a young, growing No. 4 hitter whose right-handed power would fit well at AT&T Park.
Except in 2008, when his power fell way, way, way off. My oops."
Rios’s career line: .288 / .338 / .455
Rios’s 2008 line: .291 / .337 / .455
Rios’s home run totals by season, 2004-2007: 1, 10, 17, 24
Rios’s 2008 home run total: 15
Rios’s career OPS+: 106
Rios’s 2008 OPS+: 111
Oh, and also in 2008, he set career highs for doubles and triples.
Hello, crack pipe! His power didn’t fall “way, way off.” He had a season that was ENTIRELY PREDICTABLE AND NORMAL given his established track record. Kawakami could argue that, since Rios is relatively young, he could’ve been expected to post substantial improvements in 2008 over his previous numbers, but that’s not what he did – he claims that Rios’s production fell off dramatically, when in fact it didn’t fall off at all by most standards. Yeah, his home run total fell from 2007, but over his career, he’s averaged about 15 home runs a year – which is exactly what he did in 2008. It’s not that Rios fell off a cliff – it’s that Rios was never all that good to begin with.
Did Kawakami even bother to look up what kind of season Rios actually had before he posted? What a moron.

I love Jonathan Sanchez, but I’m not in love with him. But there are people on this site who don’t think he can keep his mechanics straight for an entire season, and that’s fine.
I was always a little queasy about Bowker’s approach, but young players sometimes improve on stuff like that.
The point is I don’t think this site is the group of mindless fanboys and fangirls that Kawakami thinks it is. I see an awful lot of critical evaluation of young talent happening here.

Fred Lewis can’t keep up his BABIP. Sandoval can’t lay off a bad pitch. Frandsen can’t take a walk. Posey has no power. Wilson’s saves can’t mask his sketchy peripherals. Cain can’t keep his pitch count down. There are plenty of doubters around here for just about every young player the Giants have/had/will have. It’s tough to be a mindless, adoring fanboy when you’re busy picking apart every player your team’s farm system produces.

There were even some doubters of Tim Lincecum — although moreso on other boards than here.
Let me ask an honest question though: How many here last winter felt that Matt Cain was as good as or nearly as good a prospect as Tim Lincecum was? I know some pretty smart people who felt that way.

Thankful that we were right
I love three things about the whole Lincecum-for-Rios scenario:
1) Lincecum didn’t get traded.
2) Sabean HAD to listen to the fringe, and we were right. Big time.
And the thing I want to comment on:
3) We weren’t just homers blinding by “our guy.” We looked at him, saw how tiny he is. We saw how he pitched, didn’t really understand it, but knew it was something special. We read what he and his Dad said. We considered the negatives of what many of the scouts said: small, wacky delivery. But when we looked at those ridiculous numbers, we knew this guy was the real deal. We could see the potential. True Ace potential. And he has lived up to it.
I am thankful I get to see Lincecum pitch in a Giants uniform.

To his credit
To his credit, even in the Tom and Ralph show when he discussed a possible trade, Brian Sabean clearly rated Tim well above Matt Cain. And clearly the Blue Jays did as well, as Brian indicated when he said that the Jays wouldn’t make the Rios trade for Cain.
It appears the guy who should get the glory for Tim’s being with the Giants is Dick Tidrow. Dick was so high on Tim that he convinced Brian to cancel his plane ticket to watch Tim pitch, fearing that Brian’s presence would tip other teams off.
Other teams’ scouts took a more traditional scouting approach with Tim, and now many of them are paying the price. Let’s credit Tidrow for seeing more clearly than the other scouts did.
By the way, how many people here saw Tim pitch in the minors or for the University of Washington? I’m sure there were a few. How many saw him pitch for Fresno? Tim was UNBELIEVABLE there. In five starts he gave up NO hits with runners in scoring position and only one with runners on base. Oh, and just a dozen overall. Struck out more than three batters for every hit he allowed.

Ok, I'll bite
I never saw him pitch in the minors, but I did see him pitch once with UW. It was a fluke that I saw that. A friend who enjoyed college baseball, talked me in to going. I had no idea who Tim was. All I remember was that Cal lost , and being annoyed with the UW pitcher. Then when the Giants drafted him, my only thought was good, now he can annoy some else.

Cool!
Cool story. Tim is such an exciting pitcher to watch.
I never saw Tim at Cal, but in the first weekend of Cal’s 2007 season I just happened to see a little of Cal’s game. I watched from the balcony of the Student Recreational Facility, where I was reffing wheel chair basketball. The thing that was really cool was that similar to in AT&T Park, I could have reached over the left-center field fence and caught (or tried to) a ball that otherwise would have been high off the fence. It was a pretty neat venue, made all the more special by its not actually being seating for the baseball games but merely a conveniently-placed opportunity to watch.
By the way, that grainy 41-second video over at www.calleaguers.com was taken at Cal. I understand why the scouts had questions about Tim, but I’m surprised (and highly thankful) that more of them weren’t willing to think outside the box and see what a tremendous prospect he was.

From the other perspective
Just imagine the Blue Jays rotation with The Enchanter inserted into it….
Catcher are base running. Hitters are offense.

Absolutely
Tim and Roy Halladay might be even better than Tim and Matt Cain. :)

We should do a “dumbest bay area sportswriter” list a la our community prospect list.

I think Bruce Jenkins would run away with it, but Kawakami would give him some competition.
Matt Cain: He'll save children, but not the Dodger children.

What about Mark Purdy?!
He’s been writing the same Bring the A’s to San Jose story for 10 years now.
I dont think it’s fair that alll the other writers have to come up with new stories while he turns in the same homework day-after-day.
They say some players get out of bed hitting; Pablo Sandoval doesn't wait that long

To me, the Giants were never seriously considered the deal
The issue to me was not that the trade didn’t exist but that the impression that the Giants were seriously considering it, which most people automatically assumed.
Obviously, there was an offer made by the Blue Jays, which they clearly leaked as the Giants as a organization policy don’t usually lead info. (Plus the Toronto GM is a bit squirrelly, see his Adam Dunn brouhaha for a good example). Furthermore, Sabean made it very clear over and over that he was not shopping Lincecum.
The way I see it, the Giants decided to use the Blue Jays leakage to let the rest of the teams in the majors know that an offer was made in order to see if the other teams could top the offer, which, if you read the article linked by Grant, they didn’t think much of:
“It all has to be weighed because of the pain, when you’re talking about the type of player you have to give up,” Sabean said. “That’s a loss that, in my mind, you won’t be able to cover yourself. You can make adjustments internally in the rotation, but talent-wise, you’re really taking a step back, present and future.”
So they milked it in the press until they “decided” that the trade wasn’t worth it.
I have no proof obviously, but consider this: Sabean could have traded to get someone similar to Rios in exchange for Cain all during the years that they were desperate for another impact hitter to pair with Bonds and did not yield to that temptation or opportunity. If he would not do it then, when it was more obvious to take a step back in order to get something for today, why would he do it during what he had already termed a transitional (i.e. rebuidling) year?
