Potential Arbitration/Option Declined Players
So I suppose this is a Uggla/Cantu centric post, but I'm interested to know what players McC posters and lurkers are eyeballing as options para los Gigantes. In my eyes (warped by years in teh "Lunatic Fringe" realm), there's no way that the fish are agreeing to arbitration on more than 1 of their arbitration eligible players. If the G's could trade for any of the following and not have to give up any of the top 4 prospects (from the McC list) or lil money, Lincecum, and Cain, I'd think they would be putting themselves in a great position to put FA dollars towards best available vs. filling a need.
My targeted arbitration eligible players (in no particular order)
Who’s on your list?

Two
Francoeur and Uggla. Other than those two I think we should keep our own players and see how they do.
These two players just have such high ceilings that I think you would have to take a run at them.

If we had Renteria and Uggla as our middle infield, our offense would be much improved.
The defense might be another story.

When?
Omar is a stellar defender, but at 2B you’ve had years of Durham and Kent, with only a pinch of Velez in there and the only average Frandsen.

No Interest In The Three Outfilders
But I would definately be interested in the three infielders. Even if we had a hole in the outfield these three outfielders would not interest me.

Someone’s going to steal Hermida. Would be cool if it were us.
Francouer’s probably still a bit overrated, but give him another year of floppery and he might become underrated.
I’d take one of the third baseman, but I wouldn’t give up anything I cared about.

Evan – How different are Hermida and Schierholtz?
by aGIANTfan on Nov 25, 2008 5:34 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Uggla, yes. Encarnacion, maybe, but I’d have to look at his numbers again. Hermida is attractive, too, but there’s no way they take Winn or Rowand, so it just complicates the outfield. If Cantu happens, I’ll be very depressed.
by BigO on Nov 25, 2008 1:47 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
I think the Marlins are going to pony up for Hermida and Uggla. I think they will let Cantu walk and try to trade Ross. At least, that is what I would do if I were them.

Cody Ross
I remember that Sunday Night Baseball game a couple of seasons ago where Omar turned that double play to 3rd and caught Ross sleeping by the bag.
Best double play. Ever.
Jon Miller’s call was classic.

The only two who I see as really filling a need are
Uggla and Encarnacion. MacPherson is an injury risk long term. I would consider moving Uggla to 3rd. Francouer seems to be in a steady decline and may follow the career path of Ben Grieve. Hermida is intriguing, but OF is not really the Giants’ most pressing concern. Cantu and Ross are probably not even worth mentioning.

i wouldn’t mind some mcpherson for last year. his extreme fly ball rate (50% in minor league career) compounded by the fact that he’s a lefty probably wouldn’t play well in the phone booth. would have beat 300 ABs of castle last year…blegh
