McCoven Poll on Renteria

Pretty simple, really.  In reading the fanpost on the apparent signing of SS Edgar Renteria, it seems there are different opinions about the wisdom of this move.  So let's have a poll to gauge the overall reaction.  I'm imagining three general outcomes: (1) It was a brilliant move, Renteria hit well and his defense were excellent whereas Furcal did an Andruw Jones; (2) it was a so-so move, with Renteria being league-averagish while Burriss languished on the bench, Furcal didn't set the world on fire, and we wonder how the lost draft pick turns out for the Tigers; or (3) it was yet another terrible FA signing by the youth-averse Sabean, who was eventually fired for his overspending ways and over-30 man-love.

Poll
How will we view this move in November, 2010?
1. After the two years, this will be viewed as an excellent signing; we'll have easily gotten our money's worth.
31 votes
After two years, we'll be pretty meh. Renteria was okay, did better than Furcal, but wasn't anything special.
142 votes
After two years, we'll dislike this signing because it was another expensive stopgap move by the deposed Sabean that didn't work out; Renteria's stats fell off a cliff, while Burriss blossomed in the Twins organization.

Those choices are not ideal, imho

I’m with “meh”, but I certainly don’t think that Renteria will do better than Furcal, so I didn’t vote. Also, isn’t it possible for people to dislike the signing without thinking that Burriss will blossom elsewhere?

yeah, I agree. Furcal will be a better player than Renteria, and if they sign Renteria to a two year deal, it would mean they haven’t given up on Burriss as yet. Now if they give Furcal a four year deal, I think Manny might consider packing his bags.

"Meh"

Will always win any poll.

Obama is relieved that John McCain didn’t choose “Meh” as a running mate.

mlbtr says the rumor is false

so we didn’t sign him. As for signing him, I’d say fuck no. He’s 33, losing it defensively, and he costs us a draft pick and a good amount of money. He’s an okay hitter, but I’d rather chip out more money for Furcal.

Renteria + Coke = Explosion!

There amass been plenty of articles written this spring about the stud shortstop Matt Cain and Tim Lincecum , as well as the fluid young outfielders and thirteen basemen Kevin Frandsen.

I'd probably say...

If this happened (or happens) we’ll basically be mad about the draft pick going away, but ok about the 2 year deal vs a longer deal.

If the only choices are Renteria for 2 yrs 18 mil or Furcal for 4 years in the 50 mil range……I guess I hope for another Renteria bounce back year.

I’d be okay with Renteria at 2/$18m, or Furcal at 4/$42m. Either one seems better than standing pat.

But the best option would be to liberate a young shortstop from some other organization: Lillibridge, Escobar, Zobrist, Cedeno … Maybe none of these are realistic, but I wish I had some sense that the Giants were out there kicking tires on trade options.

by Evan on Nov 25, 2008 7:53 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

I’m very sure the Giants’ are kicking tires like a one legged man in a used car lot. I just don’t think there will be much action on the trade front until Manny, CC, Tex, and K-Rod sign.

by tyrannoman on Nov 25, 2008 8:20 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Maybe, but I’m not sure that makes sense. The set of Winn/Molina/Sanchez/prospects that the Giants have to deal doesn’t have much overlap with the set of Manny/Sabathia/Teixeira/KRod, so why would one affect the other?

More to the point, Sabean has basically never made a deal like what I’m suggesting, so it’s far-fetched to think he’s pursuing it now.

GM dreams

I’m with you Evan. Wouldn’t it be nice to have a GM who spotted young blocked talent in other organizations and traded for it? I wonder what that would be like…..

Am I mad, in a coma, or back in time? Whatever's happened, it's like I've landed on a different planet. Now, maybe if I can work out the reason, I can get home.
