I don't practice Renteria, I ain't got no crystal ball...

According to MLB Trade Rumors, the Giants have signed Edgar Renteria to a two-year, $18M contract. When I wrote my original post about Renteria, I assumed he would get a four-year deal, even though he was coming off a down year. If it's true the Giants only gave him two years, I'm on board, especially as the 2010 FA market is completely devoid of shortstops. And if this deal prevented a 4/$50M deal to Rafael Furcal, then I'll take it as the lesser of two evils.

I'll miss the second-round pick, so I'll just assume the Giants were going to pick another Jackson Williams.

UPDATE: THIS WAS A TEST OF THE EMERGENCY RUMOR NETWORK. THIS WAS ONLY A TEST. IN THE EVENT OF AN ACTUAL EMERGENCY RUMOR, THIS FANSHOT WILL BE FOLLOWED BY A LONGER FRONT-PAGE POST.

Or, to put it another way, according to Henry Schulman, rumors of Renteria's signing have been greatly exaggerated.

Carrying this over from the side thread, but Rentria’s projections are pretty optimistic for a player who had his worst offensive season last year.

Bill James – wOBA .334
Marcel – wOBA .336
Oliver – .331

Renteria had a .308 wOBA this past season.

What’s average wOBA for a shortstop?

by Evan on Nov 24, 2008 1:15 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I think league average wOBA is projected to be .332 next year. The average NL SS had an wOBA of .323 in 2008.

I’m happy with the signing, if it is the 2/18 deal. With some bounce back offensively, and hopefully defensively, this could turn out well.

Yeah, if he continues to slip defensively he’ll be pretty bad. But, if he can defend around average, the deal isn’t bad.

Yeah, I’m hoping the deal length is right. If it is, 2-years is nothing.

How do you guys feel about Burriss at 2B? I keep going back and forth. He’s going to need to defend like Mark Ellis to have any net positive at 2B. And defending like Mark Ellis is probably pretty hard to do.

I think he’ll be very good, though probably not Mark Ellis caliber.

I’m fine with letting Burriss and Frandsen fight it out for second, or platoon or something. One of them might work out.

I’m in the same boat, but put me down for more time for Burriss in the minors. I’ve been wish casting this offseason about what Burriss could contribute at the MLB level, but the more I think about it the more skeptical I become.

Yeah, but this has been a pretty intelligent offseason (one transgression aside) so maybe that won’t happen.

Seriously though is Pablo’s bat stays remotely alive his ability to man 3 spots including back up C makes him too useful to leave in the minors at this point.

I'm not sure that's true.

Pablo hit all season long. He hit in A+, so he got moved to Conn, with the pitcher friendly parks. He hit anyway, earning a ‘lil Papi’ nickname, and a callup. He continued to hit in the majors, though for a little less power. I really don’t think there’s any reason to send him down. Sometimes, good players don’t need much time in the minors. This season may have just been the magical combination of a player maturing and hitting his stride, and just getting it together.

Call me crazy, but I just don’t think you send a player down when he hits .345 in his callup.

that Lewis and Winn will be about as good as last year.

May I ask why? Lewis had what looks like flooky BABIP issues this year, and Winn is coming off one of the best years of his career and will be 35 next year. I’m fairly certain that both will decline.

His line this year was .306/.363/.426. Not crazy, but definitely above his career averages, and he’s going to be 35 next year. FWIW, Oliver, ZiPS, and Bill James all project Winn to lose 27-33 points of OPS.

That’s a typical Randy Winn season plus 8 singles. The probability of regression for something that’s so close to the mean is not really worth talking about.

Age-related decline is, of course, always a possibility in the mid-thirties.

I don’t really like Edgar Renteria – he’s an erratic player on both sides of the ball coming off a bad year on the wrong side of 30. I’d rather have played Manny Burris. At least it’s just two years

Riiight

Because Manny Burriss is really going to be more productive at the plate and better defensively at SS than Edgar Renteria for the next 2 years.

Taken in a vacuum, I understand your point

In the context of an infield consisting almost entirely of guys with little major league experience and questionable minor league track records… the Giants had to do something. You can’t go into the season with an essentially (if not officially) rookie infield.

AS for the contract, I don’t see how they could have done much better with the available options. Without looking it up, 2nd round picks aren’t all that valuable. The bonus money would be just as well spent on the amateur FA market.

Least favorite baseball myth. How many years you have played baseball does not matter. “Intangibles” do not matter. Putting runs on the board or keeping runs off the board matters.

Eh, we’ve got a good farm system it’s just the players we trot out at the major league level and pretend are prospects aren’t very good. Bowker, Ishikawa, Velez, Ortmeier, even Frandsen (never a huge Frandsen believer) are C- guys but Sandoval, Bumgarner, Alderson, Villalona, those guys are a better bet to break that cycle going forward.

Barry Zito: Mike Hampton with a guitar

by JakeS on Nov 24, 2008 2:25 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Of the guys you listed

Only two are hitters, only one is in/near the majors, and none are shortstops.

I’ll be surprised if Noonan or Villalona, or any of their other low-minors hitting prospects are really MLB ready before Renteria’s contract is up (notice I didn’t say “make their MLB debut,” an important distinctions given the Giants’ recent behavior).

What’s the worst case scenario, that they suck? They already suck! They suck with Edgar Renteria. If his hitting doesn’t bounce back they might even suck more with Edgar Renteria, it’s plausible that Manny Burriss is capable of hitting .270/.317/.382 or close enough that the difference in his defense would make him more valuable.

Barry Zito: Mike Hampton with a guitar

by JakeS on Nov 24, 2008 1:32 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

The worst case scenario

Is that none of the infielders have a future in the majors, and the Giants just wasted another season of Lincecum. Entirely plausible, IMO. I’m certainly not sold on Sandoval’s bat at 1B or glove at 3B, and he’s probably the best prospect of the bunch.

Furthermore, the risk is that they might get all desperate again and start promoting guys who aren’t even close to MLB ready, but might be at some point in the future. I’m a believer in agressive promotion, but there’s a limit. No one would get anything out Noonan or Villalona embarrass themselves in the majors, least of all Noonan and Villalona.

Arbitration contracts are NOT GUARANTEED

You take arbitration, you’re guaranteed 30 days’ termination pay. That’s all.

Also, he wasn’t guaranteed $8 million at all; the 80% rule is inapplicable for free agents.

There’s virtually no way that Renteria would have accepted arbitration.

Well...

Durham, Molina ,Rowand, Aurilia, and Klesko all drew most if not all of their value from their bat. In fact, the only defense-first players we’ve signed in the past two years are Vizquel and (arguably) Roberts.

..so allow me to present Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain as two sweet, sweet bottles of warming hooch.

by Cookyman on Nov 25, 2008 7:27 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I’ll grant you Durham, and Klesko I guess, though really he was just a cheap flyer rather than a coherent choice. But as for the others — huh??? Rowand and Molina have long had stellar defensive reputations and spotty offensive ones. The fact that they turned out not to be very good in the field doesn’t change that. Aurilia would be offense-first at shortstop, but he has been almost entirely a first and third baseman with the Giants.

by Evan on Nov 25, 2008 10:22 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I guess you’re right, but still… Rowand had good defensive reputation, but he was also a top 5 offensive CF the year that we signed him. Molina had also had two good offensive seasons before we signed him. I partially take back what I said, but really I just don’t think that we ever had a “speed ‘n’ defense” era. It was more of a “we have no offense but we need something to sell tickets with, so let’s side that with a stupid slogan” era. Or at least that’s how I see it.

my sister had one last year. She was off of work for about a week, no lifting or physical stuff for 2 weeks. I was just reading today [Newsweek I think it was] about some dude who got his appendix taken out through his mouth! For women they can go in though the uh… ahem… reproductive area…

Apparently those tummy muscles don’t like to be messed with, and the alternate routes heal more quickly.

I can’t say I have strong feelings about Renteria one way or another. I kind of like him better as a second baseman because the reports on his defense have been bad.

But you never know. Maybe he really is in the best shape of his life and will give us a season or two out of ATL and STL career.

A two-year contract is certainly reasonable, and it doesn’t sound like he’d be so expense that we can’t shove him aside if something better comes along.

I'm not crazy about this, but...

It means not overpaying for Hudson and not overpaying for Furcal, so that’s a plus.

Still terrified

Of Burriss at 2B. Hope he gets some time at AAA. If he keeps playing well, giving him the job as a 26 y/o after spot starting in 2010 wouldn’t be that bad of a deal. But if we get the Renteria of ’08, bring on the Burriss…

All the projection systems have him bouncing back offensively, hopefully he rebounds somewhat with the defense. And the fangraph link above is very encouraging.

Brian Sabean figures that if he buys enough bottles, one of them is bound to have lightning in it.

by jasomack on Nov 24, 2008 2:27 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

That's funny

Of all the young’uns I watched play the infield last season, Burriss’ defense at 2b impressed me the most. I know he can’t hit for crap, but do we know Frandsen will be able to be a solid big league hitter after losing a year to injury?

I’m pretty meh on a possible Renteria signing. If the best we can all say about it is that it’s a better option than locking in Furcal for four years, that’s kind of damning with faint praise.

No, my Crazy Crab bobblehead is not for sale.

by Kitspool on Nov 24, 2008 2:33 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

i’d rather frandsen get all the first half AB’s at 2B. He has the minor league track record, and has about the same OPS in a larger sampler size (about 100 more AB) in the majors. i’d give him 350 in the 1st half to audition for the 2nd.

i admit i haven’t seen much of burriss at 2B, but i dont think he’s a unique enough talent to give him a starting job with less than 1200 combined minors/majors AB’s…

First base = Ishikawa + Sandoval + Phelps, most likely.

And while a couple more mid-level relievers may well be signed/traded for, I doubt we’ll see a lot of activity in that area.

I was scared shitless of this happening, but if it’s really only for two years, I can deal with him as a stopgap. Let’s hope that he really is a player who hits well in the NL and he can bounce back at least offensively next year (I’m not at all optimistic about him becoming even an average defensive player again.)

Renteria at 2B

I’m really not an expert on defense, so please don’t hit me (yet). Wouldn’t second base hide his declining defense some? That way Burriss can develop at his natural position. Second base is more of where our lack of prospects is. Any defensive experts out there on the relative merits of 2B versus SS?

If shifting him I would think it would be to third base. We actually have options to try at second over the next 18-24 months.

God dammit! There’s actually a comment thread in the history of this site where some guy was adamant about the “fact” that “it’s” was a possessive and “its” was how you spelled “it is.” But I can’t find it for the life of me. He was all like “NO GUYS I KNOA WUT IM TOKKING ABOUT!” and then groug was like “WTF you talking about. You’re wrong. It couldn’t be more clear!”

But it’s lost. So anyway, it could be defended as an inside joke.

A long time ago in the Onion (I think it was the horoscopes, but I’m not sure), they had a joke that was: “With an apostrophe, it means "it is.” Without an apostrophe, it means “belonging to it.” This is really not that hard."

Rentaria (Ugh!)

I’ve never posted here (or anywhere) before but my frustration with the Giants just needs somewhere to vent, so I hope you’ll indulge me. First, as an oldtimer, I know very little about the numbers you guys use to value players but I am frequently amazed at all your analysis’. (You also frequently give me some laughs, so thanks for that). I do, however, have the battle scars of waaaaay to many years of never getting “there”. Every rumour I hear this offseason makes me want to grab my rolaids and wellbutrin! Take them one by one:
Sabathia – do any of you feel he’ll be the same pitcher in another 4 years? The mileage he already has on that arm says probably not. Six years is ridiculous. Three, four maybe, but we know that won’t get it done.
Hudson – clearly he hits better at home (which won’t be the case in SF), is breaking down, and will need at least a four year contract.
Furcal – Wants five years at 31 years old and is coming off back surgery. Why???
Rentaria – just what we need, a 34 year old who is poor fielder and had his weakest year offensively.
Just cause we might have money to spend, doesn’t mean we should. The one thing we need more than anything is a corner infielder capable of hitting third, fourth, or fifth. Gee, wonder if there’s anybody like that out there on the FA market? If we can’t have him, damn it, stop signing mediocrity (or worse) and let the kids play. At least we can learn who should be on our roster. Nah, never mind, makes too much sense

welcome

I feel ya, but also think that a 2-year deal is a pretty reasonable stopgap at a position where we really don’t have anybody ready to go. This might be a good opportunity to “buy low” since he’s coming off a poor season.

I like Manny, but as others have suggested another year in the minors and another year as a backup is probably best for him and the team.

Also, Edgar was 32 last season. We need more offense and Renteria could provide an upgrade there, whether or not we sign Tex.

The torpedo Dominican Rafael Furcal on Monday traveled to the West Coast of the United States, where he could complete an agreement with one of the two clubs in the bay of San Francisco Giants and Oakland Athletics. The pact would be for about $ 50 million.

That was a google translation btw.

If we sign him, we have our new nickname.

There amass been plenty of articles written this spring about the stud shortstop Matt Cain and Tim Lincecum , as well as the fluid young outfielders and thirteen basemen Kevin Frandsen.

in fact, don't even know where I'd go if we lock raffi up for 4-5 years...

maybe AFTER both he & Zito are off the books, by which time we will no longer be able to afford Timmy and things will be right back where they were in 2005ish when I had no reason to be optimistic. meh…no, worse than meh…I really really really hope raffi is on the right side of the bay next season, if he’s in the Area at all…

I have to admit I’m a little upset. I hated the thought of this signing at first, then gradually came to like it. As long as it’s only 2 years, I can’t see a real downside. Now, it they sign Edgar and keep the 2nd round pick, it will be even better.

Renteria is a Type A, right? If the Giants signed him before the arbitration deadline, we would lose a sandwich pick and 2nd rounder, correct?

Someone correct me if I’m wrong. For some reason I had Renteria’s FA-type confused.

You can’t lose a sandwich pick, you can only gain one. We would lose a 2nd round pick.

..so allow me to present Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain as two sweet, sweet bottles of warming hooch.

I believe, because we are protected with our first round pick, they could get a sanwick pick then our 2nd rounder. But the Giants only lose their second round pick.

In essence the league creates another pick just for them so as to protect us (the scummy 90 losses in a season team) and encourage us to stop being as sucky.

Yeah, I meant to say that we wouldn’t actually “lose” the supplemental since we never really had that pick to begin with. But the 2nd rounder would be lost.

Well I wouldn’t say that’s accurate, since the Tigers would get a supplemental round pick regardless of how many games we one. The way it works:

Type B free agent
: Supplemental round pick.
Type A free agent, signing team was in the bottom ten: Supplemental round pick + 2nd round pick.
Type A free agent, signing team wasn’t in the bottom ten: Supplemental round pick + 1st round pick.

..so allow me to present Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain as two sweet, sweet bottles of warming hooch.

Edgar Renteria

It would be a good move because it increases the productivity of shortstop from practically no run production and power to average or a little above average. Going from like zero homeruns at that position to 10 is actually a lot better than it might seem if you just think that you are going to add a guy that hits ten homeruns a year. Renteria might hit more than that too. Or he might just hit triples which is almost as good. He also is solid as a two hitter which is something the Giants lack. The second position in the batting order is pretty important. It gets a lot of at bats and needs to be able to move the lead off guy over and have enough plate discipline to hit well, but still give the leadoff player chances to steal second.

I’d imagine that a line up with Renteria would be:

Winn
Renteria
Lewis
Molina
Sandoval
Rowand
Burris
Frandsen
Pitcher’s Spot

It sucks that we only have one guy that can hit between first and third base: Sandoval.

The problem the Giants have is that Winn had a good to great season: nearly led the league in hits. And it makes him nearly or more valuable than Rowand. So you end up with all three outfield spots taken and you then can’t sign Burrell or Dunn. Signing Dunn and putting him at first might be good, but I don’t know if I’d want Adam Dunn for like seven years with a Zito like contract. And if you traded Winn from prospect and signed Burrell, you’d probably get less than Randy Winn is worth. You’d get more for him if you waited until like the All Star Break when a team is in a pennant race.

It would help a lot if Burrell could play first base.

I wouldn’t make a drastic move to add power. I think you wait for Bumgarner and Alderson and see if someone will eventually trade a power hitting first basemen for Jonathan Sanchez.

It’s too bad we didn’t get that Mike Jacobs guy that went from the Marlins to the Royals.

I think Lewis and Sandoval will have good years and it will help.

by parisspleen on Nov 25, 2008 11:34 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

Burrell played 58 games at 1B in 2000. I think the question is whether he would want to go somewhere that would plan to play him at 1B.

If coming “home” to S.F. is appealing to him, I’d imagine he’d be cool with it.

You could sign Dunn at 1B

Although the combination of Dunn and Pablo could make for an epic fail at corner fielding

Note: i would much rather free up an OF spot (see: Trade Rowand) to play Nate Schierholtz than to free up space to pay money to a big FA OF. The team has much more pressing needs than another high priced OF. I’m fine with having Winn in CF and the corner OFs making the league minimum in Lewis and Schierholtz. I would go so far as to say i would rather go 4/50M on Furcal than sign either Burrell or Dunn for the OF

Mike Jacobs had 32 homeruns in 447 at bats last season. If we had traded for him, I don’t think we’d be stuck with a big contract. It’s hardly a ridiculous idea.

It isn’t ridiculous, not on the level of Randy Winn for 3B!, but it has made an appearance on this website a number of times.

Jacobs is one of the worst defensive 1B in the game. He also doesn’t get on base. The HRs are really the only part of his game, and you can hit a lot of HRs without really being good. Jacobs manages that.

I think no one signing free agents is a sign that free agents are going to wait a long time to sign. Baseball teams don’t want to spend the money because of the recession, but baseball players aren’t going to start signing for 20 percent less.

I wonder if Sabathia took the Yankees offer if other teams would start signing players.
