A's Reportedly Offer Furcal 4/48 deal
"Rafael Furcal told El Caribe that the A’s have offered him a four-year contract worth $48 million that could reach $50 million including incentives. It’s an interesting offer, as it gives Furcal the length he is desiring in a contract, but the guaranteed money is less in average annual value than the three-year, $39 million contract he played for with the Dodgers. Furcal also said that the New York Mets have offered him a contract. Reportedly, he is returning from the Dominican to weigh the offers with his agent."

Time to fold. Sabean can’t give a guy with back problems a 4 year deal, right?
Don't think, it could only hurt the ballclub.
I think Edgardo Alfonzo and his back issues got a 4 year deal.

Hopefully that means Furcal in an A’s shirt next year then. I’m not overly keen on Furcal, but certainly wouldn’t mind him at the right price. 4/$48 is certainly more than i’d be willing to give him though.
It’s interesting though, that Furcal can have an injury plagued following a poor year & still get a big contract.

Well the best short stops due to hit the free agent market in the next 2 years are:
Tejada, Jack Wilson, Khalil Green, Bobby Crosby, , maybe Marco Scutaro and any one that sings a 1 or 2 years agreement out of Rentaria, Ceaser Izturius & Furcal.
Not a lot to drool over there.

But be wary of the alternatives
That might mean Renteria is coming. I’d sooner go with Orlando Hudson at 2nd, Buriss at short, and perhaps Frandsen at 3rd with Pablo at first. The Pablo can alternate with 3rd base if Ishikawa or Phelps get some time at first, but its Sandoval that is the everyday player.
Still no pop in the line up, so this also means that Manny is coming to town, to the chagrin of Lewis.
How come Sabean would be an idiot for giving Furcal 4 years 48 million, but Billy Beane is still a genius?? I’m still not putting that much stock into this report, because of the Met rumor. I don’t believe he has an offer from the Mets to play second base. Omar Minaya still has Luis Castillo with three years left on his contract, and just said over the weekend that he met with Castillo, and has decided to give him one more chance as the regular second baseman.

I think RX has a point
There does seem to be a double standard whenever Beane does anything. If this deal does go through at 4 years, people are going to be lining up to call it a great signing.
The exact same deal would get Sabean roasted over an open flame until his skin was crispy and lightly pink on the inside.

Yeah, but nobody was saying OMG BEANEZ A GENUZ. Paying Furcal $12M per season is about the right value for what he’s worth. That’s assuming he’s healthy — which I guess team doctors should know — and an average defender at SS.
I wouldn’t roast Sabean if he did a 4/48 deal.

I think this is were start getting in the putting a beans in to pot type scenario. In and of its self that last bean the tops the pot over can be perfectly good. But combines with the other beans already in the pot is it wise to add another?
Maybe I am overly fearful of this front office having a 90M-110M payroll producing under 85 wins. I could see them selling off all the wrong players in 2010-2012 just to "balance" the books.

all the players projected to be good in those years are all young and should be making low salaries. It’s not like they’re going to deal Tim Lincecum or Pablo Sandoval because they are paying too much money to Barry Zito. Those players won’t be making that much anyway. It would be players like Furcal, Rowand, and Zito that they would be trying to move anyway if that day ever comes.

.
Yes, but unless this winter & next create a new crop of very poor contracts exactly who will be intrested? I predict very, very few.

I think at Athletics Nation they say he’s a genius. When I heard about the Harden trade, I thought it was lunacy and they were getting ripped off. Now Holliday for a year-rental, and a Sabeanesque signing attempt at brokeback furcal, I feel like hes completely random/crazy compared to usual and noone calls him out for this psuedo-rebuilding/reloading the way everyone does with Sabean.

Fanshots
I used to never read fanshots, but have you noticed lately that they’re more interesting than fanposts?? No offense to the posters who are working hard to produce them, but wake me up when all the zips, marcels and olivers are over and after the post about Giants’ community prospect number 733.

I loves me some Fanshots.
The lazy usually stay above the in the posts and interesting tid bits ( ie flying deer heads, links to more advanced stats work etc) tend to arrive here first. If you stumble across something neat you can get it out there for comment even if you don’t have the time to expand on the work by adding content to it.

i would not be surprised if he gets less cion then that. I think he would be all over 10M/year.

I’d rather have Manny Burriss and a 2nd round pick (near the top of the 2nd round) than Edgar Rentaplaya.

Why not both?
December 1, 2008 clubs must make a decision whether to offer a player arbitration. Detroit has said it will not offer Renteria arbitration so on December 2 Sabean could sign Renteria and not forfeit a second round pick
Looks like it’s between the A’s and the Mets:
