40-Man Roster Updates
Per Baggs: Giants add Jesse English, three others to 40-man roster
The Giants added four players to the 40-man roster, which tells us the organization thinks highly of their potential. All are pitchers: LHP Jesse English and RHPs Joey Martinez, Henry Sosa and Waldis Joaquin.
Their roster now stands at 37. (Random thought: Is it like buying seats in coach? Do they need to keep two spaces clear for CC Sabathia?)
If you’re a prospect hound, you’re familiar with all four new additions. Joaquin is a power arm with a plus slider who could be a factor in late relief. Sosa is another power pitcher who had the biggest fastball in the system last year and earned a trip to the Futures Game. But this year, it took him a long time to rebound from knee surgery and he didn’t flash the same consistently good stuff this past season. Martinez is a control pitcher who is coming off an ERA title in the Double-A Eastern League. There’s nothing to make scouts drool, but he keeps the ball down and has plus command with four pitches.

So I Was Right Then
The Giants did indeed still have time to add English to the 40 man roster and thus avoid him becoming a minor league free agent. Good to know I at least got this one right.

It was bound to happen at least once! ^ _ ^

Also, I’m guessing if the Giants try to take English off the 40-man he has to go back through waivers? Transaction stuff always makes my head spin.

Not quite
The deadline was October 15th. As reported elsewhere, English did become a minor league free agent, but the Giants organization re-signed him.
Well..
It doesn’t necesarily mean that. If he was a minor league free agent he would have become one anyway and we would have needed to resign him. They only added him to the roster to protect him from the Rule V draft.

On Second Read What Are You Saying?
If he was a minor league free agent why would the Giants be concerned about the Rule 5 Draft? I initially thought you were saying they could of re-signed him as a minor league free agent but in re-reading your post this just is not clear. If you are saying he could of been an minor league free agent, then re-signed, and then added to the 40 Man Roster to protect from Rule 5 draft then I agree that I initially did not see this possibility. But, if this is what you ment you were not very clear.

OK..
There are 2 basic situations here.
1. He was a minor league free agent. He was resigned to a minor league contract. He needs to be protected from the Rule V. He was added to the roster.
2. He wasn’t a minor league free agent. He needs to be protected from the Rule V. He was added to the roster.
If we’ve only got those two situations then we don’t know what his contract status is still.

Excuse me..
“contract status was still.”

We Now Have The Answer And I Was Indeed Right
According to the above official press release from the Giants they purchased English’s contract as opposed to signing him as a minor league free agent.

Oh, Carebear...
…you’ll never change. Here’s your silly link request that supports that English was in fact a minor league free agent.
http://www.baseballamerica.com/blog/prospects/?p=1786
Here’s the deal: since English had six years of pro service, he could declare himself a free agent; free to hook up with any organization who could offer him the best chance at the majors. The Giants simply re-signed him, probably by promising to add him to the 40-man roster.
It’s really not that complicated and not worthy of all that arguing and debating you’re so (in)famous for.
Who Is Carebear?
I saw the BA claim and it was discussed in the other Fanpost. Per the Giants (as I linked) BA was wrong.

But I am thinking the other spot is for that righthanded reliever we are supose to be after.
Are there any notable exclusions?

I'm not sure..
I don’t have access to the actual contracts the Giants have with the players.

From a post from #10 Prospect
EME, J.Martinez, Copeland as Prospects
With the Rule 5 draft coming up, I think we get some insight on how the Giants value some of their own prospects. Last year at this time they added Denker, Bowker, Timpner, and Pichardo to the 40 man roster is order to keep them out of last year’s draft. Within the next couple of weeks they will probably add 3 or 4 prospects to keep them out of this year’s draft. I believe that EME, J.Martinez, Copeland, Richardson, H.Sosa, Ford, Joaquin, Schoop, Periera, Hendrick, B.Anderson, Trinidad, Mooney, Hammond, and Espineli are all eligible to be drafted.
My guess is they add H.Sosa for sure. Joaquin, Copeland, and Ford all were chosen to play for prestigious Fall leagues, so I think that they would be the favorites for the remaining spots. We will likely lose two or three of the remaining players in the draft.

Didn't You Read The Whole Post?
After adding the 4 (Martinez, Sosa, English, and Joaquin) there are now only 3 spots left on the 40 man roster and these spots are earmarked for the starting pitcher, middle infielder, and reliever the Giants are chasing in free agency. There are no more open 40 man roster slots to add any more the these 4 and the deadline to add has now passed. Everyone else is exposed to the Rule 5 Draft.

Wow that’s difficult typing all those capitalizations dude.
Anyway, he reposted that from another thread. Those are the prospects that did need protecting from what nelson95 found, obviously English wasn’t someone he looked at.

Ok but what if
you don’t hate them per se, and in fact, kind of enjoy catching an occassional song on the radio now and again, but have seriously negative feelings toward the band related to going to high school in the San Joaquin Valley in the mid-70s, when virtually every one of your school mates worshipped and idolized them, wore Boston T-shirts on a daily basis, named them the greatest band in rock history and the inventor of every important innovation the music world would ever see, while you were mocked and derided for your sad devotion to bands nobody had or would ever hear of like X and the Clash and even (what a bizarre world the valley in the 70s was) Bruce Springsteen.
Not that ever happened to me or anything. I’m just saying what if…

Roger
That was my first reaction to Boston as well, although my particular circumstances involved the guys in the college dorm room at the end of the hall playing that album LOUDLY and constantly. Couldn’t get far enough away from it. Then, as a DJ at the college radio station, I found it was in our rotation. When played at an acceptable level, it wasn’t bad. Then I geeked out on the guitar virtuosity of Tom Scholz, as well as his technical skills.

So who of note in the organization could potentially be selected away in the rule 5?
Is EME still protected?
Hello Cleveland!!!
The Clevelad Indians left the formerly highly regarded, and Burlingame resident Chuck Lofgren unprotected. He was Baseball America’s #2 Cleveland prospect coming in to the 2007, but was absolutely terrible pitching in Akron this year. On top of that, he was probably the single worst pitcher in the AFL, giving up an estimated 3,873 earned runs in his twelve innings of work.
He’s still young. He’s still a lefty. He’s a nice kid. Think that there’s any interest?
Espinelli? they don’t expect him to be grabbed in rule 5? Just because lefties ahead of him include Affeldt, Hinshaw, Taschner, plus Misch and now English. Misch has seen mixed results at the major level. Both are kinda old, Gino 26 and Pat 27.
Copeland, EME and my man Antwan Richardson are kind of generic outfielders that don’t hit for power that would not look great on a big league roster if grabbed in rule 5.
Schoop would be a gutsy guy to draft and a shame to lose, if the post is correct.

Well the way he’s been pitching, the ladies will not step aboard. Disappointing in both ways.
