What are we going to do about Dave Roberts?
I can’t believe this guy is going to be into us for $6.5 million this year! Someone please tell me this guy has some sort of upside. Most people are concerned about Zito. He will improve. Roberts … not so much. Omar Vizquel hit better than this guy last season and cost less! How in the world can we cut this guy loose? The Giants have trim some of the fat this off season. Another way of going about that would be to trade away Winn. He’s been valuable so far, but we have other big bats to fill that role, i.e. Schierholtz. Once the cuts have been made the Giants can finally shop for a legitimate back up outfielder.

If Lewis isn’t readu to start the season, he’s a decent 4th OF and could start in LF if the right deal for Winn comes along.
I think you’d have to eat the majority of his salary (or take on an equally bad one) to move him.

Perhaps ‘we’ wasn’t the best word. It’s just still mind-boggling to me that the Giants are paying out $6.5 million for almost no return.

The Dave Roberts "problem" is like a little tiny rock in your shoe
the Zito problem is like gangrene growing on your entire hip… let’s take care of this issue first.
Zito + Alderson + 20M to texas for one of their four promising catchers.
Molina to Whoever for an infielder.
Sign CC.
Success.

while i can see the merits of dumping zito, why are we sending him to Texas for a catcher? Of all the positions where we could use help, catcher is probably dead last in my eye.
Idolizing Robb Nen since 2002...
by Smoke on the Water on Nov 20, 2008 10:56 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
my figuring, see...
is that the rangers would covet alderson and only trade from a position of depth (catcher) if he comes with the pricetag of zito-assumption. and i wouldn’t want to give alderson away just to get rid of zito, so getting something of value back would be key. i figure we’d basically be trading alderson for cc and a catcher, which would be a win.

Let's just get something straight.....
Zito is not going anywhere unless the Giants pick up 95% of the amount due under his contract. So stop suggesting trades involving Zito that have a snowball’s chance in hell of actually happening.
Why isn't Sabean held accountable for leading the Giants into many years of mediocrity???

and he has coming off a 7-15, 6.15ERA year when he was traded. and, oddly enough, it was done without 95% of the amount due under his contract.

We Are stuck with Roberts for another year
Who will want to spend $6.5M on Roberts (except us)? We have a log jam in the outfield of Sabes making. I think our best hope is trade Rowand, move Winn to center, and give Nate a legit shot at right. Rowand, of course, has a no trade clause in place for next year, but with enough money, and to the right team (Yanks?) he might say yes. Winn plays center for a year, and maybe we get an extra first round draft pick when he leaves. Roberts is fourth outfielder, and leaves at the end of next year.

Great speed for pinch running. Good defense in LF. Can draw a walk and get on base.

I think this is the right answer
the $6.5 million is a sunk cost, and we can bitch about that all we want. Now that we are where we are, he can actually be a nice bench player.

I don’t understand all the hatred of Dave Roberts. Why hate him because Brian Sabean paid him too much money?? He’s not a bad player, he’s just way overpaid. It seemed like everytime he came off the bench as a pinch hitter last year he would get a hit or a walk. His on base pct the last two months was about .380 and that’s basically what he gets paid to do. Let him sit on the bench and pinch hit and pinch run.

His skillset is just kinda mismatched for this team. A platoon lefty backing up another lefty isn’t the best use of roster space. Roberts on the Giants is like tits on a peacock.

that this time next year no one will be talking about how Dave Robert’s contract was a major reason why the Giants didn’t compete in 2009. Sure he is over paid but this team has much bigger issues to deal with. Roberts will be gone in 10 months, Zito and Rowand will not.

If Nate is carried will he see playing time before August with Roberts “to show case”? I would love to see the 4 man rotaion you proposed in the waning days of ’08 but I’ve seen Boulder Skull’s 4 man outfield rotation and it was nothing like that.
And I think 4 OF are is real possible because we trips to Coors with no days off near them and our infield situation is really unsettled.
