Beltre boosting
in post season flurry of stats, lots of love for Beltre. In a top 50 list, and rated 4th best 3B overall at our sibling "beyond the box score"
http://www.beyondtheboxscore.com/2008/10/31/649202/best-third-basemen-of-2008
Somebody on the Cincy Reds site says Adrian "doesn't want to play for a team in rebuilding mode" like the Mariners.
http://www.beyondtheboxscore.com/2008/10/31/649202/best-third-basemen-of-2008 But trade wise, that is not his decision, is it? In contract year, the guy is gonna give the best performance he can.
so for my $.02, I'd rather pursue Beltre than all those shortstops who, especially in 2nd and 3rd year of contract likely no better than Manny B. Burriss looks to have an upside with the bat, especially since he covers shortstop decently. Put him at second, the value declines a lot
Meanwhile Jayson Stark says Astros are trying to move Tejada to drop payroll. Maybe something could be worked out there. I realize his hitting has been declining for 4 years, gradually lost 100 in the slugging column.

It’s all about the cost. I think he’s a fine solution at third, and would prefer it to the SSs being mentioned.

Beltre is my favorite option for 3B
I think he’ll have a huge year since he’s going to be playing for his last big contract and we should be able to collect on some high draft picks when he leaves for FA.

Not to mention, getting out of Safeco should help his numbers immensely.

this!
his home/away splits pretty much some it up.
2005 OPS is 42 points better on the road.
2006 OPS is a mere 27 points better on the road.
2007 OPS is 113 points better on the road.
2008 OPS is 158 points better on the road.
That’s pretty much a reverse maverick Coors Field effect to my eyes.

I wouldn’t say useless, they can be used to highlight how a players overall line is misleading.

They’re misleading when people assume that they are entirely due to park effects. But considering that most players hit better at home, I think this split is not useless at all.

I’d much rather just use a stat that’s park adjusted than tossing out half of someones performance. It’s not that hard to find park adjusted stats.

Yeah i do agree with you in that, although one thing to consider is that park effects don’t account for whether you’re a right or left handed hitter, which in some cases can be different. For example for a Giants player, a left handed hitter is disadvantaged in comparison & equally a right handed Mariners player (such as Beltre) is disadvantaged.

Yup, Safeco is killer to right-handed power-hitters.
And that’s pretty much Beltre’s offensive game in a nutshell.
He’s obviously not as good of a fielder as the metrics had him in 2008 (+20 runs-ish), but he’s still one of the best, probably in the +10 to +12 range. Definitely underrated.

Cost is the issue...
Beltre will cure be costly and I just don’t know if he’s worth going after given the state of the club. It’s not like he’s THE missing piece to this club, he’s one of MANY
Once scenario I’d think about. If we got Beltre (say for Fred Lewis) how about bring back Bonds to roam LF?
If we’re trying to win, we might as well try to become as good as possible. He’ll take whatever we’ll pay him and would probably love to play again.
We have enough 4th OF types to justify it, even if we can only expect 100 games from him or so

Beltre is young enough you don’t have to go straight into "Win Now Damn it!" mode.
If he was a free agent right now I would think he is a far better choice then Furcal for sureing up the left side of the infield. If for no other reasons Beltre is pretty much healthy and hits in the hart of the order. The later is something this team could really use.

Bonds is no longer an option.
If we were going for broke, all-out 2009, Astros 2008 style:
Trade for Beltre
Sign Teixeira
Sign Furcal
This would be a competitive lineup in the west:
Furcal
Winn
Beltre
Teixeira
Lewis
Molina/Sandoval
Rowand
Burriss/Frandsen
This would shore up both offense and infield defense, our two main problems from last year.

eh, there's a respect issue
I don’t think you’d want to dishonor Bonds to the public by saying he was worth the “league minimum”. A million or two still gives him some respect and still allows for the public image to be “Bonds played for near the minimum”.
Even tell him and his publicist to write a story where Bonds sent in a one year contract to the Giants and left the dollar amount blank.
Bringing Bonds back would easily add 5+ million dollars worth of revenue

I guess, if you’re considering things other than the bottom line, then yes. I’m still very skeptical of his ability to play after this much time off and every extra dollar increases the risk.

I don't know how big a factor that is...
Naturally we assume it’s horrible, but Bonds says he keeps himself in baseball shape and takes BP consistently.
In 2005 when he came back he hadn’t been in a game for about a year and looked tremendous.
He’s a special player, and while I don’t anticipate him being even the same as was in 06-07, I still think he’d be our best hitter, albeit that is not saying much
In truth, it’s really impossible to know what Bonds will be like, but it doesn’t seem like he just retired and has been watching Captain Kangaroo at home. The guy keeps himself in shape and WANTS to play again
by NeifiChicken on Nov 19, 2008 3:54 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Compared to the level he had just been at, it was a pretty drastic drop off in 2005. That was in going from his age 39 to 40 season. We’re now talking about going from his age 42 to 44 season.

knee surgery...whoops (altho elbow happened too)
his 2005 was similar to his 06-07 levels, which were what he had become due to age/surgery. To me, that shows the rust had nothing to do with 05 performance, he was performing at his new level

I don’t think “roam” is the proper way to expect Bonds to play left field these days. I think if he raced the new Orlando Cepeda statue that race would end up in a tie. Not only that, he might be spending part of the 2009 season in prison, followed by a lengthy suspension, and that could be a problem.

I have long been a proponent of getting Beltre
the Giants have absolutely no in house options for a 3B for the 2009 season (I think Pablo Sandoval playing 3B everyday would be comical) so they are going to have to bring somebody in. I would much rather take the last year of Beltre’s contract than commit to a 3 year contract for Joe Crede or Casey Blake. I think there is a chance that Beltre can have a breakout year leaving Safeco, returning to the NL West, and playing for his last big MLB payday. But even if he doesn’t, I would rather let him walk and take the draft pick or two (he will be a type B at least) than to have money committed to Blake/Crede for 2011. I don’t think the Mariners are going to ask too much for him because they need to clear salary and move forward with their rebuilding process.

- What would the Mariners be willing to accept for Beltre?
- What would the Giants offer up in trade?
- Would it cost Alderson? Tanner? Scheirholtz?

Along these lines,
-Would you trade Pucetas and Martinez plus a PTBNL for Beltre?
-Would you trade Winn to the Cubs for D. Lee?
-Would you trade Rowand to the White Sox for Javier Vasquez?
-Would you trade Sanchez and Taschner to the Brewers for JJ Hardy?
-Would you trade Molina to the Mets for Jon Niese?
-Would you be willing to get by for a year with an outfield of Lewis/Roberts/Shierholtz?

Naw – not w/o an extension. I just wait tell next winter.
Meh – That’s a coin flip for me. I would almost rather pay the Razor and Damon Bruce to follow Winn around all season then offer him Arbitration. That should insure he we get picks … right? Funny but Cedeno & Pie would almost seem more tempting.
Yah! – 2yrs 11.5mm per trumps 4 yrs at 12MM per year. Then you could also look into( but take home only one of) Furcal, Dunn or Burrell and still plenty of payroll flexibility down the road. But then there is the NTC. So much for that.
Yah- though I doubt the Brewers do it.
Yah – but again not sure the Mets do that. At not before July and without have decimated catchers corps. Or did their view on Niese drop when I was not looking?

McPherson isn't a great bet, but...
Until we get a legitimately better option, I like gambling on his talent over a lot of people. His talent was very real when he is a top prospect, and that alone warrants him a chance over a lot of the guy we have.
Ideally, we could get a safer bet, but McPherson does have upside, however low of a percentage it might be for him to reach it

on my scale
the typo from -150 to +150 is also irrelevant.

I don’t think any of this is true. Well, ok, this is true:
he’d be good pick-up if he came cheaply though.
But that’s a statement that can be said about anyone. I use it often.
When I was a kid I used to pray every night for a new bicycle. Then I realized God doesn’t work that way, so I stole one and prayed for forgiveness. - Emo Philips

the 6 point plan by Buck gets a nice lineup
the offer for Beltre…considering it is a 1 year rental, maybe too much, those are 2 starters with signigicant potential, and Mariners have fleeced us for pitching before. Would try and dial it down a bit.
Rowand for Vasquez? sounds unlikely. Rotoworld’s player page says Vazq would refuse trades to the West Coast; also Chisox want an infielder like Julio Lugo. so the outfield would be Lewis/Rowand/Scheirholz, us mcoveners are cool with that.
Hardy? He’s only 26, power has been improving. I like him way better than FurCabreRenta. But rotoworld says Rickie Weeks is the one Brewers want to unoad, and JJ goes to second. ALSO I still like Burriss at short, why not save resources for a year and see if he continues to develop…

I think the Sanchez and Taschner for Hardy thing was sarcasm
there is no way in bloody hell the Brewers would consider that.

Unless we threw in Cain.

It was partly sarcasm, because the Brewers' fans
think the team should get Cain and several of our top prospects for Hardy.

I saw the title
and thought it would be news of Beltre transfusing himself with oxygen – rich blood a la the ’84 Olympic cycling team.

I really like Beltre & he’s a very underrated player so would love us to go after him. The main problem i see is that he’s only got a year’s contract left, which would mean you wouldn’t want to give up too much.
