Hopefully my attempt at importing some WL stats is successful. I've extracted these from MLB.com, eliminated some columns of marginal importance, and taken out hitters with less than 50 ABs. Thought it might be interesting for anyone who might not be tracking this stuff, and certainly might prompt some conversation(s) within this entertaining site.
One thing that jumped out at me is the catcher slot. Not to start a firestorm -- because I know we all love Bengie -- but in the blogsite's myriad trade discussions, what about the thought of dealing Bengie while he's arguably among the top 5 catchers in the NL? Lots of clubs out there need a solid catcher, and we have Sandoval & Alonzo that would be a fine tandem there...and the possibility of Posey sticking there makes it even more interesting. If we could turn Bengie into a nice SP, 1B, or, OF...maybe it's worth a thought. So, chew on these data, take a sip of tea, and talk amongst yourselves.
Oh, and I'll try to do the same thing for our pitchers later today...

I agree with you
We need to trade Molina, move Pablo to catcher full time and get a real 3rd basemen. Some club out there will see Molinas RBIs and think he’s a good offensive player(when he’s really the opposite), make a deal while his value is still high.

EME is sipping Pina Coladas on La Isla Verde
and he is smashing the beisbol around too. Esteve-Martinez is playing winter ball for Carolina in Puerto RIcan Winter League and doing very well. Since the league is less than 10 games old EME does not yet have the required 50 ABs.

This is why the Giants should have dumped Connecticut and Dodd Stadium
EME 2008:
Home: .266/..387/.277/.664, 11 ISO, 0 HR in 184 AB
Away: .330/.391/.478/.869, 148 ISO, 6 HR in 209 AB, 35 AB/HR or about 15-20 HR in a season.
Not great but not too bad either.
The Giants should have ran screaming from Connecticut this year when they had the chance instead of signing up for two more years.
Oh, the main reason EME is not Juan Pierre: he takes a huge amount of walks, 54 walks, only 36 K, in 392 AB. Only the best hitters can get their strikeout rate below 10% (or above 90% contact rate), even fewer are able to combine that with more walks than strikeouts. At the major league level, hitters who can do that average hitting .300 regularly. Pierre don’t take many walks. In addition, EME is at 1.50 (54/36), which only the best of the best can do.
Furthermore, he had a horrible April, while he was still adjusting, then hit pretty much the same the rest of the season, suppressing his overall numbers even further: .254/.329/.296/.625 in April, .311/.403/..404/.807 the rest of the year. Plus he appeared to weaken in August, hitting only .293/.384/.333/.717 with drops in LD% and FB% over what he did previously in May to July. Perhaps with further strengthening, he will hit better in 2009.
However, ever since his injury in 2006, EME’s GB% has been around 60 percent in 2007 and 2008, but the good news relatively is that he got his LD% up nicely in 2008. Still, he is like Pierre in that he doesn’t hit for much power much of the time, just more than Pierre can muster when he is able to loft the ball up. And he improved in 2008 over 2007, in terms of HR power. Nathan took a couple of years to recover from his shoulder injury, perhaps EME just needs another year of recovery and strengthening.
In any case, he should get a promotion based on his road numbers but probably will be held back at AA, like Ishikawa was, due to his overall numbers. He really should be in AAA in 2009.

That came out kind of dickish, but
Esteve’s wOBA this year was .362 – before the park adjustments. I’m not very high on him as a prospect, but you simply can’t deny that he hit well this year. I’m just really sick of people comparing him to Pierre – OBP is really important, and Esteve just demolishes Pierre in that department.

If you do the MLE’s for his season his translates as: .249/.340/.323 which isn’t so hot. MLE’s aren’t the final word but if you check out the Oliver projections, EME’s line is very similar. Do you think he’s going to be OBPing .380+ in the big leagues? I can’t see it happening. Do you know how many players had an OBP of .380 or more in the majors last season? Just 27. And all of them except Rusell Martin and Ryan Theriot slugged over .400.
He might have 60 points of OBP on Juan Pierre at AA but I think the chances of him being a .380+ OBP player in the majors is extremely slim.

EME’s Olivers are very similar to Bowker’s. Both are 24 and play bad defense at a corner position. Would you call Bowker “Juan Pierre”? Wouldn’t you be upset if we gave up Bowker for free? Again I don’t think the he’s a great prospect, but he’s a much better hitter than what people give him credit for. And he’s really not similar at all to Juan Pierre.
..so allow me to present Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain as two sweet, sweet bottles of warming hooch.
by Cookyman on Nov 24, 2008 8:27 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I’d say Bowker is a better defender in LF. He could probably play RF in a pinch, and he can fake 1B a couple of games a year.
Bowker has also hit for power more recently than EME, so no, I wouldn’t call him a singles machine. I’m by no means big on Bowker, but I’m even less enthralled with EME. If the Giants, a team devoid of hitting, doesn’t protect EME for the Rule 5, then what does that say about him? His health is so bad — staying healthy is a skill — and he can’t run, play defense, or probably hit for power any more than you’re expecting him to remain a high OBP player in the pros. I think it’s a hole bunch of hoping. He might be a better hitter than some give him credit for but he’s still not a very good overall player.
I’d love to be wrong on this.

Iād say Bowker is a better defender in LF
Why?
Bowker has also hit for power more recently than EME, so no, I wouldnāt call him a singles machine
Bowker hits for more power, EME gets on base more. At least EME has shown the ability to hit for power in the past, while Bowker has never shown plate discipline.
If the Giants, a team devoid of hitting, doesnāt protect EME for the Rule 5, then what does that say about him?
Terrible line of reasoning. The Giants, a team with good pitching, still chose to give Zito a huge contract, therefore Barry Zito is a fantastic pitcher. Not to mention that the Giants just gave away a decent hitting prospect for free a couple of weeks ago.
he canāt run, play defense, or probably hit for power any more than youāre expecting him to remain a high OBP player in the pros. I think itās a hole bunch of hoping. He might be a better hitter than some give him credit for but heās still not a very good overall player.
Again, I don’t think that he’s a very good prospect . I don’t expect him to keep a high OBP in the majors. But I think that it’s possible. More than that, though, I just don’t understand why people completely dis and insult him with Juan Pierre comparisons. He’s not a top 20, but he’s not trash.
..so allow me to present Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain as two sweet, sweet bottles of warming hooch.
by Cookyman on Nov 24, 2008 12:42 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Why?
Bowker hasn’t had multiple leg injuries. Being able to move around is a good thing for outfielders. Bowker was playing some CF in AA in ‘07. Of course I’m not saying he has any business in center, but it at least shows some athletic ability. Would a team ever consider playing EME in CF?
This is the most fascinating conversation I’ve ever had about EME.
/hits singles
We shall agree to disagree. I never called him “trash” so you can take that strawman somewhere else. He’s just perpetually injured, and not that good. His ‘05 was amazing and I’d argue that on a talent level, he blows Bowker away (if we want to continue in the vein of that comparison) but chances are that ’05 EME is never coming back.
I’ll look forward to his 2009 season.
