Free agent prediction thread

I was assuming that someone would have posted one of these late last week at the opening of the free agent market, but I guess I’ll toss it up before the guessing gets taken away.

Team / Years / Total Salary for the following twelve:

CC Sabathia: Yankees/7 years/$162M
AJ Burnett: Yankees/4 years/$65M
Ben Sheets: Dodgers/2 years/$36M
Francisco Rodriguez: Rangers/4 years/$50M
Brian Fuentes: Indians/4 years/$40M
Mark Teixeira: Angels/6 years/$120M
Orlando Hudson: Blue Jays/3 years/$28M
Rafael Furcal: Ginats/4 years/$50M
Edgar Renteria: Cardinals/3 years/$30M
Adam Dunn: Indians/4 years/$55M
Manny Ramirez: Mets/4 years/ $95M
Milton Bradley: Seattle/2 years/$36M

Bonus question: Where is Peavy pitching next season? (Prediction: Cubs)

Take your shot (or just ridicule my stupid guesses)…

I’m terrible at predicting these. But if those figures pan out, I’ll say that Sheets, Teixeira, and Hudson will be bargains; Furcal will be too pricey even for me; and Manny will be an all-time disaster contract.

by Evan on Nov 18, 2008 9:09 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

I don’t often disagree with you Evan, but I actually think Manny will still be raking in 4 years. I think he could make that contract well worth the money to the right team.

Get the hell out the way Bengie, Pablito's hit the show!

by Roger on Nov 18, 2008 12:51 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Maybe. But only a handful of hitters in history have staved off significant decline as they approached 40, and it’s hard to imagine Manny having the work ethic to hang with Bonds and Aaron and Williams. Or even Steve Finley.

Add that to the awful fielding, the bad baserunning, the 15-20 games a year he misses, and whatever intangible distraction comes along with Manny being Manny, and that looks to me like one ugly commitment.

by Evan on Nov 18, 2008 2:59 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Au contraire

Manny is often praised for the dedication to his craft. I have read many a report that praises Manny for the hours of work he puts into his hitting – including vigorous note-taking on opposing pitchers.

Not advocating the Giants sign Manny, just sayin’ – that’s all…..

I think the 1st team that adds the 4th year will land Furcal.

We all know the Ginats have a history of over-yearing on
FA contracts.

They say some players get out of bed hitting; Pablo Sandoval doesn't wait that long

Over-yearing and Over-biddingperyear. It’s truly a addiction Sabean has never admitted to, therefore not seeing it as a problem and trying to break.

Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes. That way, when you criticize them, you're a mile away and you have their shoes.

Nah.

He could stop anytime. Really. It’s not a problem.

Am I mad, in a coma, or back in time? Whatever's happened, it's like I've landed on a different planet. Now, maybe if I can work out the reason, I can get home.

by Lyle on Nov 18, 2008 12:12 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I have to stick up for my adopted son here, and say that the “over-yearing” is necessary due to the fact that ATT is not a desirable place for a hitter. Shorter deals are for teams in friendlier ballparks with nicer climates.

by UnleashTheGore on Nov 18, 2008 9:50 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

Furcal's apparently already been

offered 3/$39 million by an unnamed team (God help us if it is the Giants), but is excited that the Braves want in on him. Fine, let him go to Atlanta. I was originally on board with getting him, but once you cross that $11-12 million per year level, it isn’t worth it for this team. They are now talking to Renteria or Cabrera for SS, but both may cost about $10-11 million per season, which seems steep to me for either one. And they are still talking to Hudson about 2B, and his cost apparently would be in the $9-11 million per year range.

Once we get up into this price range, and with guys like Noonan on the horizon, I see less and less wisdom in going after these guys. I would much rather trade Sanchez and Taschner, and even Martinez if I had to for JJ Hardy and sign him long term, and go with Burriss/Frandsen at 2B than tie up a lot of salary in over-30 infielders.

I agree. God help us if we’re offering him that much. I don’t think he’s a $13M/year upgrade over Manny.

Yes we did!

by Goofus on Nov 18, 2008 10:52 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

What’s the difference?? Are we going to lose out on a top FA the next three years or so because we overpaid on this one contract by 2 or 3 million dollars per season?? The only contract that is a bother with this team is the one where they’re paying the pitcher about 15 million dollars a season over what he’s worth.

Sheesh...Are you guys already pre-ordering Furcal's Giants jerseys?

I’ll go out on a limb and predict that doesn’t happen…though it looks like I’d be in the wee tiny minority ‘round here. Still, hope I’m right…I’m not a fan, particularly since it looks as if he will command $10M+ per season and get a minimum of 4 years.

Teixeira

If Teixeira signs a 6yr/$120M deal hope Sabean is the GM signing on that dotted line. Tex gives SF everything it is looking for in a player and line-up.

I agree and I don't agree

On the one hand, Teixeira is the perfect fit because of our hole at 1B, but the price wil likely be around 7/150 when all is said and done.

If we keep tying money into these big time contracts, there won’t be money to extend Lincecum and Cain when all is said and done. We need to pick our battles and do it smartly.

I definitely won’t mind if Texieia is brought in, but Teixeira would bring tons of fears as well. If only it weren’t for Zito, I’d feel so much better about the idea

by NeifiChicken on Nov 18, 2008 3:02 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

My priority contract to move is Aaron Rowand (we need to be realistic with the Zito contract and no trade clause). Rowand is owed 4yrs/$44-48M. White Sox seem like a perfect fit. Maybe SF eats some salary or takes some salary back.

Replacement for CF could be Randy Winn.

+1

Suggested this in a thread last week…especially with so many GMs apparently willing to pay for name recognition. Even if we have to eat a few mil, dumping Rowand unclutters the OF picture (I’m okay with Lewis/Winn/Schierholtz to start the season if we can use freed $$ to land someone like Tex…or a solid SP).

There's been less noise about Tex than about CC, and

it makes me wonder if Sabean is focusing on him under the radar. There have been several reports over the last couple of days about teams backing away from making large offers for Tex (the Nationals being the latest) because they’re scared off by the Yankees’ dollar deluge. But I haven’t heard of any team actually making Tex an offer yet.

The Yankees are saying that Nick Swisher will be their first baseman. I don’t think they go after Tex unless they miss out on all these pitchers, and with the contracts they’re offering, I don’t expect that to happen.

Just a question

How much money do we have to spend this off-season? Any ideas? ive heard 30 million and ive also heard 10-15. If its 25 MIl plus then I say lets get Tex and Furcal, but that might be a little pricey. Any ideas?

by giantsrockdudes on Nov 18, 2008 3:15 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

$20M

Maybe Sabean is thinking 2 relievers plus Furcal. Then trading for a young hitter for middle of line-up.

by wilriv21 on Nov 18, 2008 3:25 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

??

Can’t make these numbers work, even if the $20M is referring only to 2009 dollars…didn’t we just commit ~$4M in 09 salary to Affeldt? If so, then short of some really creative math, how could we expect to land someone of Furcal’s caliber price range ($10M+?) and much of anything else…?

Again, this is where / why I think the idea of trying to pawn off Rowand on some poor sap makes sense. Heck, we could even package him with one of our surplus of inexpensive mediocre middle infielders (Velez…um, can you spell B-O-N-I-F-A-C-I-O…?) with Rowand to increase the perception of value, and then we’d be better positioned to make a run at some more serious talent…
