Giants interested in Taiwan's Cheng-Min Peng
I could post the entire post, but it is in Chinese. If you can read traditional Chinese, here you go.
Link to Taiwan Newspaper Article
I'll do my best to translate roughly for the benefit of those that do not read Chinese.
Begin Translation
Major league baseball's San Francisco Giants has contacted the Chinese Professional League's most popular player, Cheng-Min Peng, through his agent. His team, the Brother Elephants, has reservations about the interest level and has stressed that if the Giants are truly interested, they would like to discuss terms on a "team to team" basis instead of working through the agent.
Brother Elephant's PR manager Ling-Ya Hong acknowledged that Peng's agent has brought up the possibility of allowing Peng to play for the Giants. The team's initial response is not favorable. Hong went on to say, however, that if there is a truly better opportunity for Peng, the Brother Elephants will not stand in the way. However, as Peng is the single most popular player in Taiwan, the team does not want to see Peng leaves to pursue greener pastures only to sit on the bench.
Hong stressed that Peng is not only the best player for the Brothers team, but the most important property of the entire Chinese Professional League. If Peng leaves for MLB, they must properly evaluate the effect to both the team and the league. She does not want to deal verbally with the agents in "exploratory" terms. If MLB teams are serious, they need to discuss directly with the Brothers from a team to team standpoint. They must make sure Peng will be treated fairly and paid properly. Compensation for the team will also be a topic of discussion. (my thoughts : Let's give them Barry Zito and call it a deal! Cy Young!)
Peng's agent Rei-Yu Lin is not optomistic about the ongoing negotiation. He stressed that if Peng is allowed to go play for the Giants the compensation will surely be higher than it is right now. (I did a little research, his signing bonus with the Elephants is 100K, with Annual compensation of roughly 120K. That's below MLB minimum). He will continue to work with the team because playing in the MLB is the chance of a lifetime.
Edit : According to Taiwan Baseball Wiki, Peng was contacted by the New York Yankees, Florida Marlins, and the Atlanta Braves in highschool. However a wrist injury ended those talks at the time. The Tokyo Yomiyuri Giants in Japan's league was reportedly interested in Peng as well but the rumor was never substantiated.

here's Peng's english Wiki page

I found a nice video on youtube that showcases his excellent plate coverage with power to all fields and plays a decent first base.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JGX6dXkry44
Being Chinese myself, I'd love to see Peng on the Giants. Not only is he a good player, he will also bring in tons of revenue from merchandise..etc. His popularity in Taiwan is only dwarfed by Chieng Ming Wang.
Other famious Taiwan Players include the Dodger's Hong-Chih Kuo and Chin Long Hu, Ex- Rockie Chin Hui Tsao, and the Yankee's 19 game winner Chieng Ming Wang

I guess
One failure counts as never working, but I think basing our luck with cubans on Osvaldo Fernandez is a little extreme.

anyone else think that most of his swings look like Phone Booth pop-ups? I mean, Aaron Rowand can go to the opposite field in the air too…
by BigO on Nov 17, 2008 7:50 PM PST 0 recs
Not really
The HR to right obviously would have been into the gap at Mays Field, not out of the park, but I don’t know that any right-hander has ever hit a homer to right-center here.
The other two shots were solid. The one to center was well out over a 400 ft. sign and the one to left plainly was way out.
That said, I have no idea if this guy is actually any good. Plus he’s 30.

his swing
reminds me of Yonder Alonso a little. Same build too. Interesting, but I think I’d pass.
His swing needs some pretty heavy work and I think he might have to spend good time in the minors.
Dayan Viciedo is a much more interesting prospect I think.
Thanks for the translating. That’s a lot of work.

I gotta disagree
Peng has a lot of noise in his swing and the path he takes to the ball is pretty long. He also moves his head around and opens up his front side far too early. He dips into his swing and has a very long uppercut.
I might take a flyer but I wouldn’t be in the least bit surprised if it doesn’t pan out.

interesting observations
Peng is heralded in Taiwan for having the best “inside-out” swing. He is a 4 time batting champ and finished last year 2nd in HR and 2nd in steals. Almost a triple crown.

While
those numbers are impressive, the quality of the league has to come into play a little. Chien-Ming Wan is the only other player to make the transition and he did it at a very young age.
It’s true that he does have an inside-out swing, but i’m not sure that at his build it’s conducive to producing much power and without that solid front leg and the back shoulder dip it’s enough to cause concern for me.
could we get Dr. B to look at this or Brute? They are far more knowledgeable than I.

Kuo's wiki
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hong-Chih_Kuo
Kuo finished the 2008 season with a 5-3 record, an ERA of 2.14 with 96 strikeouts in 80 innings. A tricep injury forced him to miss the last 15 games of the regular season, but he recovered in time for the National League Championship series and was activated on October 9th. He appeared in 3 games during the Championship series, logging 3 innings, allowing 2 hits, 1 earned run, while striking out 3.

Thanks for the response
He gets long to the opposite field — he squares his shoulders to drive the ball to right, a technique which Major League breaking stuff would eat alive — however, his pull power is much more compact. He keeps his chin tucked to the front shoulder, has a very explosive swing allowing the ball to get deep into the zone, and is very strong handed. Also looks like he prefers the ball up. So with the exception of his right-field power, I’m sticking to the Jeff Kent comp.
