Giants Sign Affeldt
Per Baggs- THe giants have signed Jermey Affedlt to a two year deal. Terms are not yet available. Isn't affeldt a type A? is it worth a second rounder? It a question will it ad 1 win or 5 wins? Also, per mlbtraderumors we have tended an offer to furcal. Put me in the anti furcal category- bad side of thirty, bad back- no thank you. SO i hope that none else did this while i was typing, rather than dropping in random filler.

which means we don’t lose a draft pick. I like Affeldt actually, so if the price isn’t insane this seems like a good deal.

Still curious about the price tag. Throwing money on the bullpen when we have an offense that will prevent us from competing isn’t smart. So if Affeldt is relatively cheap & is the highest bullpen contract we pick up this offseason, then I’ll be happy.
Don't think, it could only hurt the ballclub.

I think they key to Affeldt’s turnaround and finally realizing the potential that a lot of scouts saw in him is the fact that he has found his role as a reliever. Trying to convert him back to being a starter would be pretty stupid.

Question:
What role for Affeldt?
Will he be a 7th/8th inning guy or a lefty specialist? If 7th inning guy then Affeldt/Romo/Wilson is a nice 6 inning game. How many games can they hold/save for Lincecum and Co.?

A good reliever
I’m not opposed to the signing given a Type B, but $5M per year is absolutely ridiculous – the going rate for solid lefties is $4M per year, and I’d rather have given him 3/12 (especially with the time value of money) than 2/10.
Jonathan Sanchez. He's left-handed, like Barry Zito. His fastball breaks 80, unlike Zito.

“Though just 29, Jeremy brings a solid veteran presence to our bullpen,” said Sabean. “There is no doubt he has been able to shoulder a heavy workload. He has been to the post-season and will help bridge the gap between our young and talented starting staff and our closer, Brian Wilson, who is one of the best in the game. We are excited to have Jeremy as a Giant.”

That performance of “A Quick One While He’s Away” is legendary. It was for the “Rolling Stones Rock ’n Roll Circus”. It had been a long day of filming and everyone, including the audience was tired. Then The Who came on and blew everyone away with that performance.

Though I must admit the raptors I saw on a show the other night were disturbing. The looked like they were in a continuously mange ridden molt. They looked like they should have been playing banjo’s in the Jurassic version of Deliverance.

With the possiblity of Zito, Sanchez and a 5th starter struggling to go a solid 6 innings, the Affeldt signing should do wonders for this teams chances. Getting the ball to either Affeldt or Romo in the 7th and 8th innings should provide Wilson with plenty of save opportunities.
It also gives Sabean a chance to evaluate Valdez, Sadler, Matos, Hinshaw etc

the money is huge. I don’t think we can afford it. Nice thought though.
The real question I’d ask is what does Beltre and Furcal do for us?

An outstanding pick-up at that price,
for a guy who is better than Jack Taschner. It sounds like they plan to grab one more reliever at the least possible cost in terms of picks. Affeldt costs them zip, but I think Cruz and Reyes would cost them a pick. What about Looper or Lyon? To Sabean, it all comes down to whatever it costs them in picks.
I would think that Beimel would be forgotten now, since both of them are lefties (as is Reyes I think), but who knows?

Goof it’s up to you. I was going to have sort of a protected draft type thing, should new signees (Affeldt, Phelps, the other guy) be open to the draft or claimed for now?

I’ll leave it up to you guys, but I think it would be fun to do a complete redraft. And, for the record, I’m perfectly happy with my guy and am not interested in adopting any of the big boys. It would be nice if we could somehow incorporate site activity into the draft order so that way we don’t have the unfortunate situation of Lincecum or Cain getting adopted by someone who won’t be around ever.

Yea..
I was hoping to get some support for a site activity element. But all the other times I’ve kind of put up the front of people who post more are better I’ve been ostracized as elitist.
The only reason I didn’t want to do a complete redraft is because a lot of people like their adoptees. They’d have to consent to it.

Elitism is the only way to go. Seriously though, we want this to be a community thing, the best/only way to guarantee that is to give priority to people who have proven a “commitment” to the community. It sucks for newer members who will be active, but unless they can come up with a better solution, tough nuts. That’s my opinion, at least.

that’s at least good. I dunno. I was thinking of somehow posting a “who wants to have a draftee?” thread, then taking those who want a member and putting them through a randomizer, but with qualifiers for number of comments or something. Or somehow place a greater probability on the members who post more. But i wouldn’t know how to.

thinking allowed here. We should probably have a thread where we find out who want to adopt. Then create a draft order based on some sort of determination. I don’t know if it would be based on something like number of posts or how long someone has been a member, but i think that would pretty much assure that players are adopted by true McCoven.
Fortunately, we’ve got a long off-season to figure it out.

Affeldt was just on the MLB Late Show on XM
Mostly the usual phone interview stuff:
- Says he was open to signing somewhere as a closer, but not a big priority given the saturated closer market.
- He and his agent were impressed by the Giants and the negotiations won them over.
- Looks forward to be working with Righetti, helping Lincecum and Cain secure wins, etc.

It’s the percentage of balls hit into the air (flyballs + line drives + pop ups) that go for homeruns. League average HR/BIA for relievers is around 6% so Affeldt was a little unlucky last year in that regard. Playing in Cincinnati didn’t help him.

it would be a lot more than that
his plan is to increase the top rate from 35% to 39% which is $40,000 right there, but he also wants to apply the 6.2% Social Security tax to income above $250,000 (right now nothing over $102,000 is taxed) so for Affeldt’s $750,000 that would be an additional $46,500.
