Which of these 3 would you sign?
Greg Maddux - HOF pitcher, with well over 300 wins. Has played a lot on the West Coast lately for both SD and LA, would fit well in SF due to both the ballpark and he could help the younger pitchers with their craft.
Mike Mussina - The youngest of the 3, with 270 career wins. Coming off his first career 20 win season (had 19 or 18 multiple times with Baltimore and NYY), he changed his style a bit last year after having a poor 2007 season. Has always been kind of like a AL version of Maddux. Very smart, great command, good movement on his pitches etc. He played college ball at Stanford, but seems the least likely to come out here as his family lives on the east coast, and the Yankees will probably want to bring him back.
Randy Johnson - Surefire HOF, Johnson is only 5 wins short of 300 wins for his career, which would even further solidify his 1st ballot status. He's from Livermore, and has always been on the West Coast since being traded from Montreal to Seattle for Mark Langston in the late 80s. He's still a good pitcher at his advanced age, and bounced back nicely from a short lived 2007 season marred by back and knee injuries. Johnson's contract negotiations with AZ just broke down the other day, making him a FA. There is a good probability he could resign with AZ.
But assuming all 3 actually take a look at FA this off-season, which of the 3 would you want the most? All 3 likely would help our young studs Lincecum, Cain, Sanchez etc learn a thing or two about pitching in the big leagues, and maybe even could help the lost cause known as Zito. All 3 would be far cheaper options than somebody like Sabathia or Burnett etc, and would get a 1 or 2 year deal at best most likely. Plus they would give added intrigue to the Giants, as all 3 continue to try to pad their HOF resumes before retirement.

Sign Maddux, send each of his gold gloves to cash4gold.com, and use THAT money to sign Sabathia….Brilliant!
The bases were drunk, and I painted the black with my best yakker. But blue squeezed me, and I went full. I came back with my heater, but the stick flares one the other way and the chalk flies for two bases. Three earnies! Next thing I know, skipper hooks me and I'm sipping suds with the clubby.

Johnson played for NY
not that that matters, just pointing it out. But I’d go Mussina because he’s the youngest and least likely to break down of the three. Johnson’s got a bad back and Maddux is really old, and he’s bound to start showing it some time soon. Also, Mussina had the best year of the three.

Johnson played for the Blanks. THAT matters.
LOL at the free agency…
His back matters most. Also he’s not Johnson v.01
I s’pect he’d be all year trying to bag those five wins.

I would sign Maddux
to a multi-year deal, first as a pitcher and then after retirement as a pitching coach or manager in the minor leagues. It would be good to have him working with our prospects early in their professional careers to set a good foundation.

would be cool if it could happen
He’d probably be a great coach. I’d love for all the young pitchers to have him available for questions.

Randy
Is by far the best pitcher on this list – at least at this point in his career.
I don’t count on Mussina to get anywhere close to ’08 in ’09. Fluke written all over it.

I don’t want any of them on the Giants. We already have our gamer veteran on the staff and that’s Barry Zito. Lord knows he’s not earning that 126 million with his pitching performance, so he better be using all his spare time helping the young Giants’ pitchers.

Barry Zito knows how to pitch. He just doesn’t know how to throw hard. Thinking that Maddux can teach pitching is the same philosophy that makes some Giants’ fans think that anyone can play first base as long as JT Snow is around to teach them. It’s usually lousy pitchers that make the best pitching coaches, not great ones. They’re the ones who had to struggle their whole lives to succeed and really had to learn all the ins and outs of pitching. Who’s considered the best pitching coaches in the game?? Rick Peterson?? Leo Mazzone?? How many times did they win 20?? Why aren’t Tom Seaver, Juan Marichal or Sandy Koufax pitching coaches anywhere?? The only player that I heard Maddux really took under his wing in Atlanta was Damian Moss, and we all know how that turned out.

Maybe because for every Koufax there are 100 Mazzones?
Most of the pitchers are bad=> most of the pitching coaches were bad pitchers => most of the good pitching coaches were bad pitchers.

I can see the Lincecum argument, although I bet a lot of girls find that type of guy cute, but Cain? Cain isn’t exactly a stud, but I don’t think he’d be called ugly by any standard
Johnson is the only fugly one of that group. Now if we bring in that guy that used to be on the Astros…

I think this is a no-brainer: Randy Johnson. Not only would he serve to accomplish holding down a starting spot until one of the young flame-throwers are ready next season (Alderson, maybe Bumgarner) but the publicity/revenue he would bring while chasing 300 wins would be well worth it to the Giants. He could very easily pay for himself with the attention he would bring. And I think we all know how the Giants love cashing in on historic statistical races.

why do we need an old fart on this staff anyway?? A couple of years ago it was Matt Morris, then it was Zito, and now it’s some other washed up hurler. This idea of bringing in old guys to help the young guys is overrated. And if this is the reason you are bringing in an older guy, you should immediately eliminate guys like Randy Johnson and Pedro Martinez, who have always been selfish players. Mike Mussina should also not be a part of this discussion, because he is a Yankee and the Yankees want him back if he changes his mind about retiring. He’s from Pennsylvania, and has always pitched in the AL East. Why would he change his mind about retiring and then go all the way out to SF?? I believe Maddux has decided to retire as well. With the FA period starting yesterday, we should finally start to have real trade and FA rumors to talk about, so why are we talking about this again??
