McCovey Chronicles Community Prospect List: #7
Had to call it a tie, as the vote was too close after over 350 votes. This isn't the most elegant solution, but it's probably the best for my sanity.
1. Madison Bumgarner
2. Buster Posey
3. Tim Alderson
4. Angel Villalona
T5. Conor Gillaspie
T5. Nick Noonan
Roger Kieschnick, OF, 21 - Drafted 2008, #82 overall. Hit .302/.373/.621 over 232 AB with 24 BB and 44 K his sophmore year of college at Texas Tech in 2007. Hit .305/.407/.632 over 220 AB with 35 BB and 42 K his junior year. Is hitting approximately .261/.368/.500 in the HWL. He is a big, toolsy player who is considered to have not broken out yet despite his good college numbers.
Brandon Crawford, SS, 21 - Drafted 2008, #117 overall. Hit .335/.404/.504 over 248 AB with 25 BB and 58 K his sophmore year of college at UCLA in 2007. Hit .302/.394/.491 over 232 AB with 31 BB and 59 K his junior year. He is another toolsy player considered to have not broken out yet.
Travis Ishikawa, 1B, 25 - Drafted 2002, #637 overall. Hit .260/.355/.454 over ~2500 AB in the minors across all levels. Broke out in 2008 with a .291/.382/.462 line in AA and a .310/.370/.737 line in AAA before hitting .274/.337/.432 in the majors. He is also a great defensive firstbaseman.
Kevin Pucetas, RHP, 23 - Drafted 2006, #506 overall. Over three seasons has thrown 342.2 IP, 300 H, 267 K, 69 BB, 17 HR, 1.08 WHIP, 2.47 ERA, and ~53% groundball rate across the three levels of A-ball. In 2008 threw 125.1 IP, 115 H, 102 K, 27 BB, 6 HR, 1.13 WHIP, 3.02 ERA, and a 51% groundball rate in High-A. He throws a high 80's, low 90's fastball, a fantastic change, a curve, and an in-progress slider.
Henry Sosa, RHP, 23 - Signed out of the Dominican Republic in 2004. Over three seasons has thrown 215.2 IP, 179 H, 238 K, 93 BB, 19 HR, 1.26 WHIP, and a 3.22 ERA. His 2008 season was derailed early on when he tore his patella tendon. When he came back he threw 56.1 IP, 62 H, 58 K, 18 BB, 6 HR, 1.42 WHIP, 4.31 ERA, and a 38% groundball rate. He throws a fastball in the mid to high 90's, a curve, and a change.
Wendell Fairley, OF, 20 - Drafted 2007, #29 overall. Hit .259/.388/.337 over 193 AB in Rookie Ball in 2008 with 26 BB and 37 K. He has incredible tools with plus raw power and great speed.
Rafael Rodriguez, OF, 16 - Signed out of the Domincan Republic on his 16th birthday. As Baggs has put it, "Rodriguez is big — 6 foor-5 and 195 pounds — and plays an athletic right field. He has a strong arm, is a good runner and projects to hit for power."
Testers - Ehire Adrianza, Skip Barnes, Justin Hedrick, Joseph Martinez, Brian Anderson, Thomas Neal, Clayton Tanner

If we still have some winter downtime waiting for spring baseball may we do a SF affiliates rosterbation? Examples – Either by players or by affiliate/position.
Examples:
Player: Ehire Adrianza and then McCoven could give their suggestions of what position this player will play and for what affiliate OR
Affiliate/player: Augusta GreenJackets SS: Ehire Adrianza, Brandon Crawford, Charlie Culberson and McCoven gives their suggestions.

I was thinking of doing a recap of the list, taking the prospects day by day and having discussions about them. Perhaps their target level can be part of the discussions.

I’m a little disappointed in his K rate, actually. You’d like to see something more Cainlike from a pitcher with his kind of stuff at San Jose. Instead, his K rate is about the same as that of Jesse English, Joe Martinez, Nick Pereira.
It’s a good sign that he cut his walks so much, though.

His K rates at San Jose in 2007 were pretty nice. But he’s no Matt Cain.

Went with Sosa also. He had a dissapointing year with injuries, but that shouldn’t knock him back too much. He was best of the rest (outside of the, then, top 3) going into the season, some lists had him as a top 100 prospect & he has one of the highest ceilings.

His really whips the ball and physically he kind of reminds me of Felix Rodriguez when he was with the Giants. Tall and lanky.

I like Ishikawa, but he’s 25 and 2008 may well have been a fluke year. So I see him as more of a #11 or #12 guy.
I wouldn’t mind seeing him get some serious playing time, though. As I’ve said elsewhere, giving young players a chance to fail is exactly what the Giants should be doing right now.

A couple of reasons why i’d rank him lower:
Firstly, he did have a good year, but you can’t discount the questionable years he put before that. If he didn’t have a checkered history & last year was the norm then i’m sure he’d rank higher.
Secondly, whilst he put up good numbers, he doesn’t have the greatest upside. As a 1B the offensive standard is higher & if you compare him to other 1B i’m not sure there’s much more potential than to be an average 1B. Now that’s still very valuable of course, but when you’re comparing him to others who have a much higher potential, and other than Pucetas they’ve all got potential to be above average players, he’s going to look less impressive.

I get that, and that’s why I voted for MadBum, Alderson, Posey and Anvil before Ishi. But it seems to me voting for low minors guys simply on their upside is reaching at this point when you’ve got a guy who actually did something at the level where it counts.
Yes we did!
by Goofus on Nov 14, 2008 10:06 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, that’s fair enough, ultimately in prospect lists like this, you’re not always comparing like to like, so it’s always a case of matching up the potential with the certainty. Really, that just comes down to personal preference & different people have different ways of measuring up the two. I guess i come somewhere in the middle, where i’d go for someone like Sosa, as opposed to the two ends of the spectrum that are Rodriguez & Ishikawa.

I went with Rodriguez. I’m disappointed Scott Barnes isn’t on the list yet.
I really don’t think Ishikawa should come close to touching the top ten, not that I don’t think he could be a good player, but he’s well beyond top prospect status. Isn’t he out of options? If he doesn’t make the team he may be looking for another organization.

Justin Hedrick shouldn’t be up for a vote for a goooooood long while, IMO.
by Grant on Nov 14, 2008 4:08 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
Hedrick could, and should, be a solid contributor in the pen this year. So, he sort of has the Ishikawa thing going for him where he won’t be super valuable, but he will be valuable and cheap immediately. Really, what’s the difference between him and Romo, except for the fact that Romo was actually given the chance to move up?

For me it comes down to Kieschnick and Rodriguez, and not Sosa. I just feel like pitchers that have been injured are going to keep getting injured. Injury history has to be a huge part of the evaluation of a pitcher. I hope I’m wrong about Sosa, but there it is. Anyway, I know next to nothing about Kiesch and RafRod, but they both seem to be toolsy corner outfield types to me. I guess that Rodriguez has more upside because he’s reportedly got a cannon and should be a fine defensive player, but he hasn’t played at all against collegiate or professional players. Kiesch has, but he seems to be limited to life as a Pat Burrell type (hope that the power alone is enough to forge a successful career). I think I’m going to go Kieschnick because I really didn’t like hearing about some scouts saying that RafRod’s swing was, umm, questionable.

I went Pucetas. Very good off-speed pitches, and the guy has put up great numbers at every level. He doesn’t have the huge fastball that Lincecum/Cain/Alderson/Bumgarner have, but I think he could be a good starter.
With Sosa, the injury concerns me.
With everybody else, they are too early in their careers to know much about them.
As to TI, he’s more a known quantity, less a prospect, as far as I’m concerned.

I had him 5th, so no probems for me at 7.

No, it’s actually a great idea and I honestly never would have thought of it.

If you don’t mind, that would be awesome.

Also have a definitive poll closing time

I'm not sure if that's possible..
I’ve got work and school at different hours every day and week, I’m not sure about marcello but he also has other diversions in his life I’m sure.

But, if you mean just for the polls..
Not necessarily when the next poll is put up we could do that. 2 days from the post time?

Set a poll closing time
Then at that time take inventory.
a) can declare winner
b) have runoff with a new poll closing time then declare winner

Yes please. You can’t have a prospect list with ties.
I voted for Noonan at 5, but I’d rather concede it to Gillaspie than have a tie.
by mxmob33 on Nov 15, 2008 3:24 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
And with that..
Gillaspie is called the #5 prospect automatically. The true #5 prospect would have fans who would rather give up the prospecticy than to tie for it.

The tie is the weeniest concept in all of sports.
by mxmob33 on Nov 15, 2008 8:29 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Wrong, Walrus
You clearly haven’t read the Bible story about King Solomon and the disputed claim to a baby. If a Noonan supporter would rather give the #5 spot to Gillaspie than have a tie, then it’s clear that Noonan is the truly deserving choice, rather than Gillaspie.

Is someone threatening to cut Noonan in half?
Because after some deliberation, I’ve decided I’m against that.
