Giants touch base with Sabathia
Interesting to see this....

They also go on to say Furcal is their main target while Pablo Sandoval will be the choice to start at third rather than go after Joe Crede or Casey Blake. Also Sabean says that the Elias ranking will also be weighed to not lose a draft pick. I think the Giants may be better suited to go after Derek Lowe (in the type A catagory) or a Braden Looper/ Brad Penny type who can fill a need for not a lot of $$$. I personally like the idea of Casey Blake as a Giant. Do you like this course of action by Sabean? Your thoughts

where's the casey blake DO NOT WANT picture?
though having furcal, penny, lowe, and blake jump see the light at the end of the blue tunnel all in the same year would be a little funny.

Looks like Blake is taking a giant Lasorda on the infield…
The bases were drunk, and I painted the black with my best yakker. But blue squeezed me, and I went full. I came back with my heater, but the stick flares one the other way and the chalk flies for two bases. Three earnies! Next thing I know, skipper hooks me and I'm sipping suds with the clubby.

Glad to read Sandoval will be playing 3b instead of 1b and that SF is interested in Furcal.

I’m glad Pablo will be at 3B as well. As much as I’m drooling over Texeria right now, I’m pretty sure I would have buyer’s remorse before Spring Training. I do like the Phelps/Ishikawa platoon at 1B, and am confident the O will be better this season.
by tyrannoman on Nov 14, 2008 9:47 AM PST 0 recs
it will almost certainly be better
but it has a long way to go before it’s even average.

Reality check, please. Phelps has less chance of being on the ML roster next year than Scott McClain. He’s a scrap heap pickup who couldnt’ crack the majors in his prime years. Let’s not put much hope into him doing so next year, especially in a semi-regular role.

I’m sure you personally are being consistent, but a helluva lot of Giants’ fans wanted us to sign Josh Phelps the last two offseasons till we actually signed him. Now he’s a bum.

Uh, from 24-27 he accrued 1190 AB’s over 4 seasons. That’s basically an average of 300 AB’s per year. I’d say he cracked a a few rosters during his prime years.

And, not to rehash any Phelps discussions but ZiPs just projected him for a line of: .273/.339/.457 OPS+ 106. That’s entirely useful off the bench or in a platoon role.

Point taken. I used “crack” with too large a grain of salt. Heh. He got a lot fewer AB in the past three years, though I would have done better to refresh my memory of his work.
But I stand by my larger point, which is that he’s a longshot to make the roster. Penciling him in as the 1B platoon with Ish (which would mean the bulk of the starts) is waaaay premature.

He’d only platoon against LHP, which would give TI the bulk of playing time at first, no? I’d say he’s a “medium” shot to make the team depending on what the Giants do with Aurilia.

I do think he can play a solid platoon role, and will be a handy guy to have around. If it doesn’t work, then it doesn’t. I’m not expecting .270/.335./20/85 out of Phelps, after all.
Yes, the offense will still be a long way from average, but it will be better than last year.

I’m on board with Sandoval at 3B and signing Furcal to a 3-4 yr deal, and moving Burriss to 2B where he will be awesome defensively. Furcal is good, and costs no pick.

And then when Furcal gets injured in late April, Burris goes back to SS where he belongs, and Frandsen gets the 2B he deserves and puts up a .375 OBP, giving lots of RBI opportunities for Pablo, Travis, and Bengie.
So, yeah, that could work……

The Yanks reportedly will offer CC something in the $140-$142 million range. The Giants probably wouldn’t have to go that high, but we’re still talking Zito money/term to get CC. Plus, the union will be putting a lot of pressure on CC to take the Yankee offer, though my gut tells me that CC is the kind of guy who would resist that and go where he wants to go if other offers are “in the ballpark.”

I’m hearing on the radio that the Yankees have already offered CC that money, and are willing to go even higher if they have to. Somebody close to Sabathia supposedly said he has no intention of leaving any money on the table to give someone a hometown discount. The Yankees are not going to let him get away after making the mistake of not trading for Johan Santana last offseason.

Say what you will, if the Yankees are willing Payby $20 to $30 million over the course of the contract more than any other team, C.C. will be looking at apartments in Manhattan. I don’t think anyone could realistically leave that kind of cash on the table. If he really wanted to stay with the Brewers, he would’ve signed the $100 mil deal they’ve (alledglly) offered.

Not saying I know one way or the other...
… but of course Sabathia’s going to say that. It potentially drives up the price of teams like the Giants, where CC may actually prefer to go but aren’t offering enough.
Like everyone else though, I highly doubt he’ll leave 20 or 30 million on the table just to come home to the Bay Area.

I have mixed emotions on Furcal. Yes, he’s a better player than Burris, but this is typical Giants. They promise 145 starts to a kid then give a long term expensive deal to some veteran and the kid is on the outside looking in. He’ll never hit well enough to be a good major league second baseman, so basically his Giants’ career is over as anything other than a backup.

it comes down to health
If we were confident that Furcal would be healthy in each of the next 3-4 years, I think at 10-12 million per year he could prove to be a bargain. He offers above average offense at defense at a position of great need.
Problem is, he’s been hurt for huge chunks each of the past two years and is getting further and further past age 35

Disagree
now is the time when we can take a chance on someone who might have injury issues. we are in rebuilding mode and an injury to a veteran in the next couple years isn’t going to affect our bottom line. I’d rather see us focus our money for one big free agent, but if we came away with Furcal, I wouldn’t be upset. And I wouldn’t be worried about injuries.
I think I pulled my swagger muscle...

I don’t mind the $10-12 per (even $15, the money is there to spend in this case) but I wouldn’t go over 2 years with a club (or vesting option) for the third. That being said, I’m okay with a long look at Burriss if the Giants’ don’t sign Furcal, as long as they bring in an Adam Everett type as a backup in case Emmanuel needs a little more Fresno time.

No A-List free agent wants to come here,
and the sooner the Giants reconcile to that, the better. They will only be able to add needed parts through trades, or by letting the kids play another year to see what they have.
