Garrett Atkins?
MLB.com has a story about the Rockies almost certainly getting set to trade third-baseman Garrett Atkins with the Reds listed as a potentional suitor.
Any chance we can land this guy? He seems like a terrific option if his price isn't too high. 29 years old, 21 homers last year after an exceedingly slow start. Would the Rockies be willing to trade within the division and what do you think it would cost us to get him?
Of course it's all speculation but hey, that's what we're here for.

Nah, I’m bearish on Atkins. He’s a terrible defender (-27 plays in ’07 and -11 plays in ’08) and Coors field products scare me. His ’08 park adjust wOBA is .341 which is probably average, to slightly below for a 3B.
When you consider that he’s probably giving back 1 win on defense, he’s not a great option. He should probably play 1B but he doesn’t have the bat to do so.

Pretty much agree with this
If he was basically free, sure, but he’ll costa pretty penny and is just not worth it

For those interested, the wOBA for a league average 3B in the NL last year was .347

I made a wOBA Calculator Spreadsheet. I just go to BB-Ref and do their positional splits, fill in the spreadsheet, and find your wOBA. I can share it if anyone wants it.

Spreadsheets FTW!
Here’s the Excel file if anyone wants it – http://www.baycityball.com/misc/wobacalc.xls
The layout isn’t that great, but it gets the job done. It’s a little less useful now that StatCorner exists but it’s good for certain things.
Sometimes you’ll notice that the wOBA scores will be a 1-2 points different from places like StatCorner or FirstInning but that’s probably determined by the way each site handles PA’s, other than that, it’s been accurate.

I’d prefer Encarnacion if they make him available after acquiring Atkins.
by Fresburg on Nov 12, 2008 6:56 AM PST reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, I wasn’t sure about his defense but I wouldn’t be upset with him at first base either considering the Ortmeier/Aurilia debacle but it remains to be seen where Sandoval is going to land position-wise. I was surprised to hear the Reds mentioned in the article with Encarnacion in the system but Cincy doesn’t seem very happy with him. If we could get Encarnacion for even cheaper than Atkins I would be happy with that too.

BA OBA SLG OPS
Home .337 .394 .527 .921
Away .260 .328 .424 .752
No thanks. Always be skeptical of the Coors Field inflation. Combining sea level with his poor defense and that we would have to part with talented players to acquire him…Big mistake.

+1
…for the same reason, the A’s will regret parting with Street/Smith/CarGon for Madonna er, I mean, Matt Holliday. I think Holliday will put up decent numbers away from Coors Field, but he won’t approach the production the Rockies have enjoyed the past couple years. I’d bet the A’s are sellers on Holliday in July 09 and will just have to hope they can get a decent return on him…

I actually don’t mind the move from the A’s vantage. Smith, outside of his crazy good pickoff move, isn’t much. Street is a good reliever and CarGon has a lot of upside still. Not a bad package of players for 1-year of Holliday + 2 draft picks.

Matt Holliday, OPS+ last 3 years
137, 150, 140. Runs above average, last 3 years: 25.2, 41.8, 30.5.
Obviously Holliday’s raw numbers in the pitcher’s park that is Oakland are not going to approach the raw numbers he put up in the htiter’s park that is Colorado. That’s a no brainer. No sane A’s fan, and I’m pretty sure no one in the A’s front office is expecting Holliday to put up a >950 OPS in Oakland.
Really, people need to stop tossing out home stats and only using road stats as if the road stats matter but the home stats don’t. The home stats also happened in REAL MLB games, against REAL MLB pitchers. You’re throwing out half of what happened. WHY?
There’s no reason to use road stats, when park adjusted stats like OPS+, EQA, Batting Runs, runs above position.
Holliday is also a plus defensive player. Once you include D, Holliday has a pretty good case as the best corner OF in MLB.

Off topic
But it looked like the A’s got a steal to me. Billy doesn’t trade unless he absolutely screws the other guy. Smith doesn’t look that great to me, Street lost his job, and CarGon they just got from ARZ last year so they still have most of the prospects left from that deal. I think they might actually keep him for some reason… They have to have a building piece eventually.

The deal only makes sense for the A’s if Billy has more up his sleeve.

I think Beane is one of the top three GM’s in baseball but this isn’t true. The Hudson trade and the Lilly merry-go-round fiasco are two examples where he didn’t come out looking so good.
