Which Free Agent(s) do you/we want?

There are many free agents and rumors floating around during the offseason and it's always exciting to follow the Hot Stove. I was just wondering, out of the many free agents we are linked to, which one or ones should we be going after? Obviously, if we pursue superstars like Manny, CC, and Mark, we would not have the option of a Furcal and Hudson to go after, because we would not have enough money. Therefore if we take a Adam Dunn instead, or a cheaper, less-pursued player, we could help more than one position on the team. Although on natural instincts we would love to see a Manny in the Bay, we have to look at reality also and for the future of the team.

OK.

1) How does signing someone now prevent them from gaining those 20 wins in 2011
2) The odds of anyone of our our guys putting up an OPS greater that Texieria (for example) in 2011 is quite low.

Signing free agents is bad if:
a) the player you sign sucks (see Zito, Barry)
b) you run out of money to sign more, better free agents (see Zito, Barry)
c) you have better players that you are blocking (see Robert, Dave)

I am pretty sure, given the Giants budget they could manage to find something in the FA market, if they weren’t stupid.

It’s also bad if:
d) you have to sign a player for his mid/late 30’s years at too many dollars when the player is no longer worth it.

Different schools of thought on this, but I’m with jponry on this. It’s like playing marbles, they’re going to try and grab all the marbles, and it’s our job to hide them.

Cain is untouchable.

That’s what Sabean said. I wouldn’t want a first baseman who most of the time either hits home runs or gets out. Of course, most of the time you’d get out. We need on-base percentage to go along with that. Plus, I’d hate to see Cain develop into an ace and we would look like a fool dealing him (do I have to mention the other pitchers that turned out great for another team)?

In fairness, I’d have to guess that Manny will be vastly more productive over the next four years than anyone currently in our organization. Whether or not he’ll justify the contract he wants to sign is another issue, and of course we’re a bit overloaded with OF right now, but from a bottom line perspective I’d be willing to guess that even the Manny of 2012 might well be a better hitter than the best one on our roster.

Seriously though, Jason Phelps type signings really are the best option for a team in the Giants situations. Guys who you can get for minor-league or league-minimum type deals. Provided we don’t give them playing time over actual interesting youngsters (almost a guarantee, unfortunately, with Bochy) then we’ve got backups and insurance for injuries or complete ineffectiveness from those interesting players.

Sabathia gained my admiration and respect when he put the Milwaukee Brewers on his back and led them to the playoffs. Here was a man a month away from a huge FA contract and he wanted the ball. On three days rest. Repeatedly. This is the kind of teammate you would want. A great face to any organization.

Build the team through the draft and player development and fill holes through free ageny. Granted, we have a lot of holes, but I could definitely stomach a sandoval-furcal-burriss/franny-ishi infield.

by iheartdickau on Nov 11, 2008 11:49 PM PST reply actions

CC and/or Tiexiera

If CC doesn’t want to go to NY then shouldn’t we be the frontrunner?

I say pay him $20M/yr for 6 years and front-load the contract so that we pay him $24M/yr for the first 3 years and $16M/yr for the last 3 years. We pay him more when the rest of our payroll is still cheap and by the time we need more money his contract takes a huge cut. Plus if for some reason we needed or wanted to move him down the line, it would be much easier to move a $16M/yr contract.

I think I pulled my swagger muscle...

by BawLa on Nov 11, 2008 11:53 PM PST reply actions

There's no salary cap.

No need to try to “fit” a payroll.

That extra $8M a year you’re spending today, is going to worth (much) less in 3-6 years time, due to salary inflation. And you can invest the money that you’re not spending.

For the most part, front loading an MLB contract is NOT a good thing. Backloading is good. MLB is not the NFL. The reason you want to frontload, is if doing so can get a player to take a shorter contract, or a smaller contract.

And I doubt that the NYC teams / RS / Cubs / Angels, aren’t going to beat a $120M / 6 offer.

I think he means that since Sabean isn’t using the entire budget now, spend more up front so you have more to spend on other player when you actually need it.

Since, as you point out, present value dollars are worth more than future value dollars, I’d want the player to take less over-all if I’m front-loading the contract.

Yes we did!

I voted for Dunn/Hudson

I’ve jumped on the Dunn train, and I’ll stay on if it means a 2 or 3 year contract, even if he’s being overpaid. With AnVil still a few years away, it wouldn’t handcuff the team to have an overpaid 1st baseman for a couple years. I’d rather have Hudson than Furcal, mostly because of my outspoken disdain for Furcal, and because Hudson would be cheaper and probably healthier.
