Tim named cover athlete of MLB 2K9

New York, NY – November 11, 2008 – 2K Sports, the sports publishing label of Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc. (NASDAQ: TTWO), announced today that National League Cy Young Award winner, Tim Lincecum of the San Francisco Giants, will be featured as the cover athlete and spokesman for next year's highly anticipated baseball video game, Major League Baseball® 2K9. Lincecum led Major League Baseball with 265 strikeouts during the 2008 season and set a new team record in the process. He has quickly become a fan favorite and established himself as one of the most thrilling young pitchers to watch in baseball today.

"Winning the Cy Young Award is truly an amazing honor, and now having the opportunity to be on the cover of Major League Baseball 2K9 is another dream come true and an absolutely surreal experience," said Tim Lincecum, MLB All-Star pitcher for the San Francisco Giants. "Whenever I’m hanging out at home or traveling on the road, you can find me playing video games, and I’m definitely the best gamer in the clubhouse by far. I’m incredibly stoked that 2K Sports picked me to represent Major League Baseball 2K9, and I look forward to lending my baseball knowledge to the development process."

...

"Tim is a special player and has the best stuff in baseball. We couldn’t have selected a more naturally talented and exciting player to represent Major League Baseball 2K9 next season, and given that he’s an avid gamer, it will be a lot of fun working together," said Greg Thomas, senior vice president of sports development for 2K. "Visual Concepts has taken over the development of our Major League Baseball title, and we look forward to continuing to provide fans with the most authentic and high quality gameplay experience that we bring to all of our sports titles."

MLB 2K8 came with a Jose Reyes bobblehead for those who pre-ordered, so I'm hoping they'll release a Lincecum bobblehead for 2K9.

The covers they listed were probably preliminary mock-ups, don't look too great yet, but heres what they had.

That was awful quick...

too bad MLB 08 on PS3 is a better game, although neither holds a candle to MVP Baseball

yeah, The Show is definitely the better game, but 2K is the bigger franchise for sure since they reach across all the major consoles.

I still play it!

by satyricrash on Nov 11, 2008 12:30 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

I still play it, too, although I had to make Cain and Lincecum from scratch. It would be nice if they put out roster updates every once in a while or something.

Another great thing about the game: In MVP 05, Zito is still good.

MVP Mods is where it’s at, my friend. Unless you don’t have the PC version.

There amass been plenty of articles written this spring about the stud shortstop Matt Cain and Tim Lincecum , as well as the fluid young outfielders and thirteen basemen Kevin Frandsen.

The mod is pretty impressive, but I think I spent more time having my PC crash than I actually did playing the game.

Which mod did you install? There are quite a few of them.

there have been rumors that they’d be replacing joe morgan and jon miller for mlb 2k9, not sure how much substance there is behind that rumor though

by i wish we were good on Nov 11, 2008 12:35 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

They should replace Jon and Joe. 2K8’s commentary was laughable. I was ready to murder school children after hearing Miller say A LINED SHOT for the 30th time after hitting a weak grounder.

I have a friend who’s working at 2K Sports who told me about this a few months ago. He actually asked me who I would like to see on the cover, and I suggested Lincecum (of course). I’ve been keeping that under wraps ever since. Also, 2K9 is supposed to be way better than 2K8, which is a very good thing.

I mean, better than it’s already supposed to be. Which is better than 2K8.

Probably $60, but the game won’t be out until March probably. Not sure on the preorder, but I assume Gamestop, EB, etc. will have that available when a release date is locked down.

I like how in all of these photos that the pieces of shoulder flair are prominently displayed.

love the cover

I assume this means they will be able to use some sort of motion capture thing (you know, the wet suit with ping pong balls, forget what it’s called) for Timmy’s delivery so it looks better.

This will be a little weird though, since usually the cover athlete’s team is one of the best in the game…

I know it’s the cover athlete mostly, but in most games their team is also really good. From the last few years for various games, from what I remember, there was Manny’s Red Sox, reyes’ mets, wright’s mets, pujols’s cardinals, guerrero’s angels, etc. For the most part, their teams were very good, and I remember seeing something online where some guy simmed all the games and found that the cover athlete’s team almost always won.

You are correct, though, that it doesn’t have to be like that, and I’m still very happy Timmy will be on the cover.
