What matters most: Wins, Saves, New York Pressure
“It’s funny because toward the end of the season, in early September, I was thinking Lincecum would be in my top two,” De Luca told John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle. “I thought Webb’s victories (22) stood out to me more than anything, and Lincecum didn’t have the victories. Twenty victories was a big deal. We had a stretch there where no one was hitting 20.”
Added De Luca: “Santana (undefeated after June 28) stood out because there was so much pressure not just being in New York, but to be who he is. With Lidge being a perfect closer (41-for-41 in save chances), that was a tough pick for me, not to pick him No. 1.”
De Luca said he grew up in northern California, in Sacramento, and had Giants season tickets until 1984.

DeLuca
Santana stood out because there was so much pressure not just being in New York, but to be who he is
So I suppose there’s no pressure on Timmy for having an entire franchise on his shoulders, or for knowing that he’d have to give up fewer than 2 runs in order to have a chance at a victory?
I’m thinking DeLuca is really a “LoDuca” and spews Dodger Blue.
We all know that Sacramento isn’t “Northern California” anyway, despite its location.

Sorry
Sorry to take so long posting about Tim’s great award. I have been busy discussing it elsewhere.
I have to admit that when the season ended, I thought the alleged East Coast bias combined with Johan Santana’s great finish — which included a GREAT game on the last Saturday of the season and nary a loss after June 28th — would allow him to steal the award from its rightful recipient.
The thing that convinced me Tim would indeed win was that he was a dominant winner in three internet polls I viewed. Still, I was surprised that 23 of the 32 voters chose him. And dumbfounded, of course, that Chris De Luca of the Chicago Sun Times left both Tim and CC Sabathia off his ballot entirely (voting for Brandon Webb, Santana and the-deserving-of-at-least-a-little-support Brad Lidge).
I also was surprised that the Reds’ Edinson Volquez received nary a nod.
As much as I believe Tim deserved the award (apparently being the very first Giant in history to lead the MAJOR LEAGUES in strikeouts), let me point out something I learned about Brandon Webb that in my mind improves his case and makes me feel better about his beating out Santana for second place.
On August 26th, Brandon was hit in the chest with a line drive. He toughed it out and didn’t miss a start, but he had his only three poor starts of the second half immediately thereafter. In his next three starts, Brandon was tagged with three of his seven losses, yielding 19 earned runs in just 13 2/3 innings. If we assume that Brandon took not one but three for the team, his record after the All-Star break would have been 9-0 with a 1.84 ERA.
Without a complaint and while likely believing himself that Tim deserved the Cy Young, Brandon Webb put together a very impressive season — even BEFORE one knows all the circumstances, and certainly thereafter.
The margin
Lincecum got 23 of 32 first place votes and 137 points total. Webb finished second with 73 points.

Surprisingly
Brandon Webb won 22 games. Tim Lincecum won 18. Johan Santana won 16. Yet amazingly each left the same number of 23 games with the lead and in line for the victory. Webb easily outdistanced Tim and Johan in wins because his bullpen blew only one win for him, while Tim’s blew five and Johan’s an incredible SEVEN!
Bullpen blew six of Tim's leads...
4/8 vs. SD
5/15 vs. Hou
6/1 vs. SD
6/22 vs. KC
7/26 vs. Az
8/1 vs. SD
Also, the Giants offense got Timmeh off the hook on two occasions: 6/16 vs. Detroit, and 9/28 vs. LA. In the first instance Lincecum received a no-decision instead of a loss. In the 9/28 game, Pablo Sandoval pinch-hit for Lincecum in the 7th inning and delivered a game-tying single, followed later in the inning by Nate Schierholtz’ single that gave the Giants the lead and Timmy his 18th win.
Santana’s bullpen blew seven of his leads, as you say. But his offense also bailed him out of would-be losses on three occasions, and also turned what would’ve been one ND into a W (8/12 vs. Wash).
Adding that all up, Santana’s record “should’ve been” 22-10, while Lincecum’s “should’ve been” 23-7.
Why couldn't McCovey have hit the ball just three feet higher??
“One writer, Chris DeLuca of the Chicago Sun-Times, did not name Lincecum on his ballot. His three choices were Webb first, Lidge second, Santana third.”

SAN FRANCISCO — Tim Lincecum has been called “The Freak,” “The Franchise” and “Seabiscuit.”

2. Seabiscuit?? really?

Nickname
I have gotten no support for this nickname from anyone aside from Tim’s older brother Sean, but I’m kind of partial to The Ace of Diamonds. Tim’s award yesterday further demonstrated that as far as the National League at least was concerned, he was fully deserving of that nickname this season.
I’m SO glad I predicted a breakout season for Tim. But even I didn’t truly expect him to be a runaway Cy Young Award winner this soon.
The Enchanter..
Really needs to get out there more. Sometime next season there needs to be a group at the yard wearing SF Enchanter hats.

Well I think that’s because MVP had the top-10 ballot back then but they didn’t even do a top-3 ranking for the Cy Young. Until 73, that is, when Marichal got his 3rd-place vote at the tail end of his career.

I had a five-point plan for an incredible fall
-Kim Ng getting hired by the Mariners.
-The Rays win the World Series.
-Barack Obama getting elected President of the United States.
-Tim winning the National League Cy Young Award.
-Me getting into Stanford University.
Well, we know the results of the first four. I got disastrously awful SAT scores so Stanford is now out the window. But hey, two out of five ain’t bad.

This is sick. Way to go Timmy!
Of the 9 teams that passed on him in ‘06, only Tampa (Longoria) and LA (Kershaw) can make legit arguments that their pick wasn’t wasted.
Otherwise, the GMs of KC, COL, PIT, SEA, DET, CIN, BAL = FAIL
Tim Lincecum is Baseball's Chuck Norris
Seattle's fail is the worst
Gargantuan, you might say.
¿Julio is tourist in San Francisco? Harper's Bizarre!
Morrow’s no joke. The worst pick of that draft was Greg Reynolds. With the #2 pick in the draft, never pick the “solid #3 starter.” Those guys are just as likely to hurt themselves, so why not go for the upside?

Fail? Epic Fail.
I didn’t realize that this same draft we picked Burris #33 overall. Not bad, not bad at all.
I think the Brad Lincoln pick wasn’t too hot either

I agree Grant, but
The folks in Washington should have known him best (and many did), and he WANTED to play there.
¿Julio is tourist in San Francisco? Harper's Bizarre!
AWESOME!
And well deserved. First Giants pitcher to win that puppy in my lifetime! (I was born in January ‘68, so I missed McCormick’s award by this much.) After so many close calls, most recently with whatshisname—I forgot, he’s dead to me anyway—it’s fantastic to see this happen on our team.
Timmy and Sabean should each have a cigar. They’ve earned it.
No, really, I have updated my blog this year: http://skaldheim.livejournal.com/tag/baseball
I'm sure
Bochy would feel like he is owed a cigar for letting him go deeper into games when he probably already should have been taken out.
Did anyone else catch this?
Lincecum A Giant Among Men In NL
San Francisco righty Tim Lincecum (all 5 -feet-1 and 170 pounds of him) wrested the NL Cy Young Award from a beefy field that included heavyweight flamethrowers Brandon Webb, Johan Santana, Brad Lidge and CC Sabathia.
Since when the hell is Webb a flamethrower?

JOBA CHAMBERLAIN!!!!!
HIS NAME CAN BE A STAR WARS REFERENCE!!!!
Okay, like, I don’t get… if you’re going to base it solely on wins, fine.
But Lincecum was SECOND in the league in wins (and first in win percentage)
HOW DOES THAT TRANSLATE TO 4TH OR 5TH BEST PITCHER ON THE BALLOT?
DIE IN A FIRE, WILBON.
Matt Cain: He'll save children, but not the Dodger children.
PABLO SANDOVAL AM STEAL DEATH, DESTROYER OF WORLDS.
Calm down, it's simple
Brandon Webb was first in wins, so he’s first on the ballot.
Brad Lidge had two wins, but 41 saves, which each count as half a win. He’s second.
Johan Santana had one less win than Tim, but they were NEW YORK WINS, so each one is worth 1.25 more than a regular win. He’s third.
CC Sabathia had 13 wins, but if he was in the National League the whole season, he would have had like 30. But he wasn’t, so he gets penalized. He’s fourth.
Tim Lincecum is short and doesn’t look like a pitcher. He’s fifth.
My current Interwebs obsession is pretty awesome. Also, my website is called ChatterBalks Dot Com. It's not being updated right now. Hope for more at your own risk.

But they made the playoffs and almost broke the curse!!

So Chicago Wins count for 1.5 of SF wins. Dempster 1st, Santana 2nd, lidge 3rd, webb 4th, lincecum (maybe) 5th.

My letter to Chris DeLuca. Thanks for his email address.
Hi, Chris,
I imagine you are taking quite a lot of heat today for not having the Cy Young winner on your ballot at all, and possibly also for your published comments that attempted to clarify your thought process. The comments — which appeared to suggest that pitching in New York City gives extra weight to a candidacy, and to suggest that wins are the most significant stat that measure a pitcher’s effectiveness — were likely taken out of context. I have been misquoted and taken out of context in print, as well, so I ignored those.
In this empathic reverie, I was trying to remember the last time I did an analysis and drew a conclusion, and absolutely every single other person in my field came to a completely different conclusion. I was trying to remember the last time that I was so completely out of step with the best thinking in my field. I was trying to remember the last time I had to confront the fact that absolutely every single other person in my field saw something in a way that was different from mine.
And, of course, I couldn’t. I cannot think of anyone who can, and still keep his or her job.
I am curious whether you think you might have gotten it wrong or rather think that all 31 other voters got it wrong. Because, truly, a 31-1 result is not a “difference of opinion;” it is the very definition of someone getting it completely wrong— either the group of 31 (possible) or you (probable).
I don’t blame you. I really don’t. I blame MLB for turning voting over to BBWAA, and I blame BBWAA for letting people vote who have no analytical ability or basic sense about the game of baseball, nor the fundamental curiosity nor the intellectual chops to notice that the understanding of baseball has evolved beyond the mere “Wins tell you all you need to know about a pitcher” worldview. After all, medical science has moved beyond the tourniquet, and people who don’t grasp that don’t get to vote on the Nobel Prize for medicine.
It’s the winter; pick up a couple of books on modern baseball analysis and school yourself on the components of baseball performance that contribute to a team’s success. Read a little Bill James or any of his many followers. Or switch to hockey coverage. In any case, I hope you contemplate that you’re not a “maverick,” but rather underequipped for your job.

STUPIDITY ALERT
From a Rob Neyer chat:
“oe (Madison, WI): After thoroughly looking at the stats, I really don’t see how Santana should not win the NL Cy Young. You agree? Faced harder competition, was on a better team, better ERA, that enormous game that last Saturday. Should have won about 22 games, led the NL in innings. Lincecum had 2 more wins, and more strikeouts, but strikeouts shouldn’t really be a factor, who cares how someone gets the outs as long as they get the batters out. Santana just had the better season.”
So…he doesn’t think Lincecum should get credit for having (many) more strike outs, but he does think Santana should get extra points for having pitched on a good team, and for how many wins he “should” have gotten? Um….okay.
Don’t get me wrong, there’s an argument to be made for Santana, but that ain’t it.

I think one thing that really proves Timmy should have won the Cy Young...
Is to see how much pretty much EVERYONE one here was simply 100% convinced that he should win, and how RELIEVED we all were when we found out that he did win. Last year wasn’t some normal season, that was simply unreal pitching, and if he hadn’t won the Cy Young award, it would have been a terrible injustice. Last year was probably the best season I’ve ever seen by a Giants pitcher.
