What matters most: Wins, Saves, New York Pressure
“It’s funny because toward the end of the season, in early September, I was thinking Lincecum would be in my top two,” De Luca told John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle. “I thought Webb’s victories (22) stood out to me more than anything, and Lincecum didn’t have the victories. Twenty victories was a big deal. We had a stretch there where no one was hitting 20.”

Added De Luca: “Santana (undefeated after June 28) stood out because there was so much pressure not just being in New York, but to be who he is. With Lidge being a perfect closer (41-for-41 in save chances), that was a tough pick for me, not to pick him No. 1.”

De Luca said he grew up in northern California, in Sacramento, and had Giants season tickets until 1984.

DeLuca
Santana stood out because there was so much pressure not just being in New York, but to be who he is

So I suppose there’s no pressure on Timmy for having an entire franchise on his shoulders, or for knowing that he’d have to give up fewer than 2 runs in order to have a chance at a victory?

I’m thinking DeLuca is really a “LoDuca” and spews Dodger Blue.
We all know that Sacramento isn’t “Northern California” anyway, despite its location.

He has transcended from this earthly realm and is currently playing a harp, extolling the virtues of Lincecum.

There amass been plenty of articles written this spring about the stud shortstop Matt Cain and Tim Lincecum , as well as the fluid young outfielders and thirteen basemen Kevin Frandsen.

Sorry

Sorry to take so long posting about Tim’s great award. I have been busy discussing it elsewhere.

I have to admit that when the season ended, I thought the alleged East Coast bias combined with Johan Santana’s great finish — which included a GREAT game on the last Saturday of the season and nary a loss after June 28th — would allow him to steal the award from its rightful recipient.

The thing that convinced me Tim would indeed win was that he was a dominant winner in three internet polls I viewed. Still, I was surprised that 23 of the 32 voters chose him. And dumbfounded, of course, that Chris De Luca of the Chicago Sun Times left both Tim and CC Sabathia off his ballot entirely (voting for Brandon Webb, Santana and the-deserving-of-at-least-a-little-support Brad Lidge).

I also was surprised that the Reds’ Edinson Volquez received nary a nod.

As much as I believe Tim deserved the award (apparently being the very first Giant in history to lead the MAJOR LEAGUES in strikeouts), let me point out something I learned about Brandon Webb that in my mind improves his case and makes me feel better about his beating out Santana for second place.

On August 26th, Brandon was hit in the chest with a line drive. He toughed it out and didn’t miss a start, but he had his only three poor starts of the second half immediately thereafter. In his next three starts, Brandon was tagged with three of his seven losses, yielding 19 earned runs in just 13 2/3 innings. If we assume that Brandon took not one but three for the team, his record after the All-Star break would have been 9-0 with a 1.84 ERA.

Without a complaint and while likely believing himself that Tim deserved the Cy Young, Brandon Webb put together a very impressive season — even BEFORE one knows all the circumstances, and certainly thereafter.

The margin

Lincecum got 23 of 32 first place votes and 137 points total. Webb finished second with 73 points.

Surprisingly

Brandon Webb won 22 games. Tim Lincecum won 18. Johan Santana won 16. Yet amazingly each left the same number of 23 games with the lead and in line for the victory. Webb easily outdistanced Tim and Johan in wins because his bullpen blew only one win for him, while Tim’s blew five and Johan’s an incredible SEVEN!

by sharksrog on Nov 12, 2008 1:08 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Bullpen blew six of Tim's leads...

4/8 vs. SD
5/15 vs. Hou
6/1 vs. SD
6/22 vs. KC
7/26 vs. Az
8/1 vs. SD

Also, the Giants offense got Timmeh off the hook on two occasions: 6/16 vs. Detroit, and 9/28 vs. LA. In the first instance Lincecum received a no-decision instead of a loss. In the 9/28 game, Pablo Sandoval pinch-hit for Lincecum in the 7th inning and delivered a game-tying single, followed later in the inning by Nate Schierholtz’ single that gave the Giants the lead and Timmy his 18th win.

Santana’s bullpen blew seven of his leads, as you say. But his offense also bailed him out of would-be losses on three occasions, and also turned what would’ve been one ND into a W (8/12 vs. Wash).

Adding that all up, Santana’s record “should’ve been” 22-10, while Lincecum’s “should’ve been” 23-7.

Why couldn't McCovey have hit the ball just three feet higher??

Nickname

I have gotten no support for this nickname from anyone aside from Tim’s older brother Sean, but I’m kind of partial to The Ace of Diamonds. Tim’s award yesterday further demonstrated that as far as the National League at least was concerned, he was fully deserving of that nickname this season.

I’m SO glad I predicted a breakout season for Tim. But even I didn’t truly expect him to be a runaway Cy Young Award winner this soon.

Well, we know the results of the first four. I got disastrously awful SAT scores so Stanford is now out the window. But hey, two out of five ain’t bad.

Ever positive, Rotoworld joins in on the fun
Lincecum received 137 points to Brandon Webb’s 73 and Johan Santana’s 55, so it’s clear the Giants had absolutely no need to push him so hard down the stretch in a shameless bid to secure him the award.
