McCovey Chronicles Community Prospect List: #4
1. Madison Bumgarner
2. Buster Posey
3. Tim Alderson
Angel Villalona, 1B, 18 - Signed out of the "Dominic Republican" in 2006. Hit .285/.344/.450 with 15 BB, 42 K, 5 HR, and 20 total XBH in 229 PA in Rookie Ball in 2007 as a 16 year old. Hit .263/.312/.435 with 18 BB, 118 K, 17 HR, and 46 total XBH in ~500 PA in A-Ball at Augusta as a 17 year old. As a hitter, he has a ceiling that is rivaled by few batters in the minors, but he is still extremely young and still needs refinement.
Conor Gillaspie, 3B, 21 - Drafted 2008, #37 overall. Hit .419/.500/.697 with 38 BB and 22 K over 234 AB his junior year of college at Wichita State in 2008. Hit .269/.352/.344 between Rookie Ball and Low-A in 2008 over 93 AB. He torched the Cape Cod league, a wooden bat league, in 2007 with a .345/.448/.673 line, earning league MVP award. Projects to hit for good average, a good OBP, and decent power.
Nick Noonan, 2B, 19 - Drafted 2007, #32 overall. Hit .316/.357/.451 over 206 AB in Rookie Ball in 2007 with 18 SB and 3 CS in 2007. Hit .279/.315/.415 over 499 AB in A-Ball in 2008 with 29 SB and 4 CS. Survived an aggressive assignment to Augusta in 2008.
Roger Kieschnick, OF, 21 - Drafted 2008, #82 overall. Hit .302/.373/.621 over 232 AB with 24 BB and 44 K his sophmore year of college at Texas Tech in 2007. Hit .305/.407/.632 over 220 AB with 35 BB and 42 K his junior year. Is hitting approximately .261/.368/.500 in the HWL. He is a big, toolsy player who is considered to have not broken out yet despite his good college numbers.
Brandon Crawford, SS, 21 - Drafted 2008, #117 overall. Hit .335/.404/.504 over 248 AB with 25 BB and 58 K his sophmore year of college at UCLA in 2007. Hit .302/.394/.491 over 232 AB with 31 BB and 59 K his junior year. He is another toolsy player considered to have not broken out yet.
Travis Ishikawa, 1B, 25 - Drafted 2002, #637 overall. Hit .260/.355/.454 over ~2500 AB in the minors across all levels. Broke out in 2008 with a .291/.382/.462 line in AA and a .310/.370/.737 line in AAA before hitting .274/.337/.432 in the majors. He is also a great defensive firstbaseman.
Kevin Pucetas, LHP, 23 - Drafted 2006, #506 overall. Over three seasons has thrown 342.2 IP, 300 H, 267 K, 69 BB, 17 HR, 1.08 WHIP, 2.47 ERA, and ~53% groundball rate across the three levels of A-ball. In 2008 threw 125.1 IP, 115 H, 102 K, 27 BB, 6 HR, 1.13 WHIP, 3.02 ERA, and a 51% groundball rate in High-A. He throws a high 80's, low 90's fastball, a fantastic change, a curve, and an in-progress slider.
Henry Sosa, RHP, 23 - Signed out of the Dominican Republic in 2004. Over three seasons has thrown 215.2 IP, 179 H, 238 K, 93 BB, 19 HR, 1.26 WHIP, and a 3.22 ERA. His 2008 season was derailed early on when he tore his patella tendon. When he came back he threw 56.1 IP, 62 H, 58 K, 18 BB, 6 HR, 1.42 WHIP, 4.31 ERA, and a 38% groundball rate. He throws a fastball in the mid to high 90's, a curve, and a change.
Wendell Fairley, OF, 20 - Drafted 2007, #29 overall. Hit .259/.388/.337 over 193 AB in Rookie Ball in 2008 with 26 BB and 37 K. He has incredible tools with plus raw power and great speed.
Rafael Rodriguez, OF, 16 - Signed out of the Domincan Republic on his 16th birthday. As Baggs has put it, "Rodriguez is big — 6 foor-5 and 195 pounds — and plays an athletic right field. He has a strong arm, is a good runner and projects to hit for power."
Testers - Please suggest some, although we likely won't need to add more options to the poll for a few votes.

Also..
Next poll we will be able to add one more person. After that, if someone else needs to be added because you think they should be in the 5-7 area then post them with who you think should be removed and why. That will give both marcello and I something to think about, as well as giving the community some information.

Should he be in the poll soon? What do you rate him? I know he’s interesting, but he also was only in a latin league this year.

Maybe I should spell his family name correctly – Adrianza. Played the 2008 season with the Giants AZL affiliate. The kid has received rave reviews about his defense and his bats projects to play well. Just turned 19 yrs old.

I think suggestions for nominations should be pretty open...
…but I wouldn’t vote for Adrianza for at least another ten votes at least. Would Adrianza even be on anyone’s radar if he didn’t have that crazy day this season where he played for the AZL in the afternoon game and then Fresno in the night game?
Outside of that, his history is a little too similar to Schoop a la three years ago. Young, ‘rave reviews’ of his defense (from the same single source, BA), and a lot of potential with little actual production.

But the BA reports
are really, really high. They considered ranking him the #1 prospect in the AZ league. As it was, he finished #4, primarily, they said, because he was hurt during the year.
I know he’s raw. I know he’s young. But there’s a lot to get excited about. Andrew Baggerly of the San Jose Mercury News also says he’s a top-10 prospect in the Giants system.

AnVil’s gonna win by the biggest margin in any of these polls.
As for testers, Adrianza’s a good one… maybe Edwin Quirarte? His role as a reliever means he probably doesn’t have as big an upside as some, but I think he’s a very solid bet to advance quickly and eventually contribute in a big league bullpen.

it'll be interesting to see
who number 5 is. I’m torn between Noonan, Kieschnick, Sosa, and Fairley; they could all be at #5 for different reasons – Noonan has shown the most, Sosa could turn into a studly strikeout starter, Kieschnick could develop some pretty sweet power, and Fairley could turn into a Carl Crawford-lite if his tools develop (I liked his plate discipline a LOT, and his hitting got better every month after a very slow start). Choices, choices..

Testers for next poll(s)
Brian Anderson – Missed 2008 with an undisclosed injury, but a high performance closer who is very close to the bigs as is.
Thomas Neal – Toolsy outfielder-turned first baseman, came off of injury this season and flashed his power potential, those his performance was inconsistent.

I think Anderson will shake out in middle relief in the bigs, he lacks a true plus pitch and his arsenal isn’t anything that’s super dominating. Not sure how much of a prospect he is. Maybe he’s in the 35-40 range?

Whatever happened to him? I remember looking forward to seeing how he would do in AA this year, and he didn’t pitch an inning. Though looking at his stats again, you might be right, he walked a fair number of people in 2007 for being a reliever, and gave up more hits then innings pitched – those two combined don’t really work that well for closers unless they rack up K’s, which he doesn’t quite do. I’m still optimistic though!

Quality middle relievers with control...no one wants to pay for them, no one values home-growing them.
It’s like the hot dog. People love, nay, need them, but don’t value their development…or don’t even want to see it.
I don’t know that Anderson would be a Top 10 guy, between the injury and relative depth of the Giants system right now, but I would have him in the 10-15 range.

We all know the correct answer to this question, so I’ll throw out my thoughts on the next tier …
Gillaspie: Pro debut was unimpressive, but everyone says he was a steal at #37, so let’s wait and see.
Noonan: Can he overcome the horrible K/W numbers? Everything else seems to be on track. He runs well, he can play his position, and considering how young he is and how tough the hitting environment in Augusta is, he showed good power.
Kieschnick: People seem excited about him, but I’m not sure why. He has little or no defensive value, and his college stats aren’t really that impressive given the Big 12 context.
Sosa: He did pitch better at San Jose this year than last, improving his control quite a bit, but a pitcher with injury problems = scary.
Fairley: Still has great tools, still hasn’t done anything with them (except get hit by pitches). He was drafted higher than Gillaspie/Kieschnick/Crawford and is a year younger, so should he still rank higher?
Rodriguez: All we know at this point is that his scouting reports aren’t quite as rhapsodic as Villalona’s were. Upside fetishists will want to rank him high, but I’m going to wait a while before taking him too seriously.
Ishikawa: Generally it’s a mistake to make up excuses as to why a player’s bad year (or two) doesn’t count, but in Ishikawa’s case there are some good reasons (Dodd, injuries, overaggressive promotion, possible personal stuff) not to hold 2006-07 too much against him. Mays Field, too many strikeouts, and trouble with lefties will make it hard for him to keep a job, but my guess is that his 2008 was legit. Comp: Travis Lee?
Pucetas: Now everyone’s favorite sleeper, right? Joey Martinez has virtually the same level-by-level periphs as Pucetas and is a year ahead. Is there some scouting reason to prefer Pucetas to Martinez?
Crawford: I like him better than Kieschnick, personally, but he was drafted later and hasn’t really played yet, so he has to rank lower.
Tanner: A very young lefty groundball machine with solid control – kind of a weird combination. Pucetas has outpitched him but is also three years older. Can he add some velocity?
Adrianza: I have no idea where to rank him, but I predict he will play in the majors in 2009.
I’m going with Noonan over Gillaspie for #5, and there’s a substantial gap after those two.
by Evan on Nov 10, 2008 5:41 PM PST 0 recs
Pucetas
The thing I heard that was most exciting about him was the movement on his fastball. During the futures game Pitch F/X had him averaging around 12 inches of tail on it which is, or is close to the most of anyone in the bigs.

The kid had an OBP of 429 last year in the Majors. Just a couple of months after being drafted. I will take those on-base skills any day of the week; the days of watching Caribbeans swinging at slop nightly are finally behind us.
On a more serious note, good call on the Travis Lee comp for TI. I keep trying to force him to be Will Clark in my mind, but Lee works better, especially since they are both named Travis.
