and now he gets to do it on the A's

wtf?
Unless they’ve got a whole lot of other shit planned, this won’t really help them that much. They’re definitely more than one hitter away from contending. Now their lineup is Cust, Holliday, and ……… Beane’s been making some strange moves lately…

this makes no sense to me, unless they gave up very little to get him
Holliday isn’t going to allow them to compete with the Angels and isn’t going to be around when Cahill/Anderson/et al actually start making a difference in the majors.
Psycho killer, qu'est-ce que c'est?
Think ahead
Oakland is probably not trading any “A” prospects. The A’s have the option to move Holliday at the trade deadline or keep him the entire season and offer arbitration and gain two draft picks. Like throwing lesser cards in poker in hopes of drawing better cards.
If that's true...
…then what does it say for the Rockies? They’ve got to be getting something more valuable to them than the two draft picks they would get if they do nothing.

they had shit for a payroll last year
and they have money to burn. One guy from AN said something like $40M for this year or something like that.
Si
and want to sign Furcal. Have read the A’s budget can range from $40M to $80M. Wow, that is a very wide range for a GM.
$80M? Wow... I've heard that the A's owner is filthy rich
that would be over the Giants’ payroll for last year, right? This isn’t the A’s that I know… wow.
Psycho killer, qu'est-ce que c'est?
From Ken Rosenthal:
The A’s are not acquiring him with the intention of flipping him or even trading him in July. The team is in position to increase its payroll to as much as $80 million, and plans to contend next season.
To that end, the A’s also are targeting free-agent shortstop Rafael Furcal to be their leadoff man. Furcal is drawing interest from about 10 clubs, according to his agent, Paul Kinzer. The acquisition of Holliday could help persuade Furcal that the A’s are serious about competing.
The A's payroll in 2007
was around $75M. The term “small market” is grossly overused.

i wonder where the money comes from
I don’t think attendance is any better, did they get a huge TV contract for some unexplained reason?
by NeifiChicken on Nov 10, 2008 3:52 PM PST up reply actions
Actually, they did improve their TV contract if I understand it correctly
Your 2008 Athletics: It's Nothing Personal.
Revenue sharing, national TV contract,
MLB Advanced Media, national licensing, national merchandising. I’ve seen estimates that put MLBAM at $20M-$25M per team, national TV at $20M-$25M per team, and licensing and merchandising at about $10M a team, total of around $50M-$60M per team.
The A’s obviously are not going to be a Yankees type team. Or even have a Mets / RS / Cubs / Dodgers / Angels type payroll. But, they, and other smaller MLB teams do NOT need to have a payroll of $40M-$50M to be viable, despite what some of the cheapskate owners would like fans to believe.

a bit far off for that, don't you think?

No way they need salary relief that bad
The Rox attendance has been up the last 3 years, some 700K over their low in 2005. Getting rid of their top hitter in a pure salary dump would be a really good way to squander that hard won fan base. That’s Huizenga dumb.

Why pay the monies if you know you cannot/will not re-sign the fella? Either save the monies or make this trade to free up the monies so can sign other players. There was no way Colorado was going to keep Holliday for 2010 so they made a choice in 2009.
Carlos Gonzalez, though, qualifies as an “A” prospect. Smith might or might not (BA ranked him #19, I think, on last year’s list). And a young closer on top of those. If that’s really the package, I wouldn’t say the A’s only gave up very little.
Scott McClain: Great story, no place on the 2009 Giants.
Have read Gonzalez has potential but is he truly an “A” prospect? He has been involved in two trades within the last 12 months or so. Teams tend to keep the plums.

He didn’t exactly have a great 2008. With Oakland or in Sacramento. But it should be noted he barely had any experience above AA before this year.
if they didn't give up much to get him, then it seems better
It just seems like Colorado would be able to get more than scraps for him and that the A’s would have to give up more than they would be able to get back in supp. round pick.

also
Holliday had some decent protection in that lineup. The A’s have none other than Cust. Giambi might help some if they get him.
I don’t think there is any actual evidence that lineup protection matters.

Agreed
1 year of Holliday + 2 comp picks could be worth more than Smith (who has a solid but unspectacular ceiling), an over-rated outfielder in Gonzalez and a young but quickly declining and injury prone closer in Street.
Well, that certainly would be the A’s spin.
Although I agree about Smith and Street.
by Lars The Wanderer on Nov 10, 2008 2:11 PM PST up reply actions
Wait a dang...
…Street and Smith?
The Rockies just acquired every player in baseball… with stats and photos!
"When Jackson Williams thinks of how many times Madison Bumgarner has tried to kill Tyler Walker..." Well, apparently he succeeded on that last go 'round.
Smith sucks.
Smith is the overrated one. His peripherals are crap. Scouting wise, he’s a flyball pitcher with a mediocre fastball, so-so command and control, who relies on throwing away, away, away, and hoping that he either gets the call, or the hitter chases the pitch. He very likely got lucky on hits on balls in play this season. The one thing he has going for him is his pickoff move.
It’s Gonzalez who might become something for the Rockies. Nice tools, but yet to translate his tools into actual production. His 813 OPS in the minors is pretty damn mediocre, considering he spent most his time in the minors in hitter friendly environments.
ZIPS: Milledge: 466 HR, 485 2B, 2282 hits, 278-379-524
the key is he (Gonzalez) was always very young for his level, but yes, as of now he’s more about potential than performance. Colorado is certainly an ideal environment though, if he can’t make it there, he can’t make it anywhere
by NeifiChicken on Nov 10, 2008 3:55 PM PST up reply actions
Yeah, he was very young for his levels
I should have mentioned that.
Between him and Aaron Cunningham, the other OF the A’s got in the Haren trade, I’d take Cunningham.
Gonzalez has tools. Cunningham has the better numbers, especially when you consider that unlike Gonzales, he was playing in more pitcher friendly environments when he was in the WS system. They’re the same age
ZIPS: Milledge: 466 HR, 485 2B, 2282 hits, 278-379-524
Yeah, Smith in Colorado is going to be ugly.

Agreeing with your agreement.
If they don’t trade him by August getting extra picks in the top 50 or so is huge. Hell its huge for any franchise but even more so for a smaller wallet. This is just Beane setting up for 2014 or so. Anything Holliday does is almost gravy.

That’s a pretty poor trade for the A’s if you ask me. That’s a lot to give up for one year of Holliday. I’d assume they’ll want him longer term, but with Boras as his agent i doubt he’ll agree to an extension & they’ll have to pay him a shedload if they do want to re-sign in a year.

To the A’s??? FTW…
Anyway he’s out of the NL west which is nice.
There seems to be some confusion about which A’s are going to the Rockies in return, but it seems to be Huston Street, starter Greg Smith, and stud prospect Carlos Gonzalez…. I also read there may be players to be named later and money changing hands, and from all the major sports outlets they seem to be confused as to what exactly is being traded. Regardless, any reactions?

Ay caramba, this is big news. The best bat in the division has been removed, paving the way for a Giants NL West Crown in ’09. Oakland must be sending quite a package of youngsters to Denver for this deal to go through.
And Oakland moves from a team that had no chance of winning their own Western Division to one that might only lose to the Angels by fifteen or so games.

I hope not. Though its a wide margin, the A’s are my 2nd favorite team. And I have Brett Anderson as the 4th pitcher for the Giants in Baseball Mogul and he deals.
