Call-up Schedules?
Think about it....
Actually, I wanted to know what you guys thought about the timeframe for some of our young stars to get up to the bigs. I'm not talking about the September call-up, but rather being called up for the majority of a season. When can we expect the following prospects:
Buster Posey
Madison Bumgarner
Tim Alderson
Angel Villalona
Henry Sosa
Nick Noonan
Clayton Tanner
Wendell Fairley
Kevin Pucetas
Conor Gillaspie
Rafael Rodriguez

My 2 Cents
Buster Posey – September call up assuming he devours minor league pitching, and if not sometime in 2010
Madison Bumgarner – May/June 2009
Tim Alderson – May/June 2009
Angel Villalona – I’m hoping for a September call up but probably more likely in September 2010
Henry Sosa – I’m beginning to think he’s never going to get called up but that’s just me being a pesimist. If the Giants like what he brings to the table, either a bullpen spot out of spring training or sometime in 2009 as a reliever.
Nick Noonan – Way to early to tell in my opinion, but maybe 2010
Clayton Tanner – Same as Noonan
Wendell Fairley – Same as Tanner
Kevin Pucetas – I’d guess that it’s earlier rather than later, but that’s probably just based on his reputation and his appearance in the Futures game. I’m hoping midseason ’09
Conor Gillaspie – I hope he hits his way on to the big team based on a fantastic winter/spring training, but more likely end of 09
Rafael Rodriguez – Jeez, we’re probably looking at 2012 if he gets here at all based on his age. Then again he could be Julio Franco’s great grandfather for all we know…

Yeah some of these are nonsense
Bumgarner would only be 19 years old, Villalona 18?!? for a Sept callup this year, and 19 for next, neither of which is likely to happen.

I would not be at all surprised to see Bumgarner in the rotation next September. Elite HS pitching prospects move fast; usually the only thing holding them back is poor control, which isn’t Bumgarner’s problem.

If Bumgarner follows the "Kershaw Fasttrack"
He will be in the ML after about 200 MiL innings. That puts him on pace for a post ASB callup next season.

agreed
And Villalona hasn’t played above A-ball, and hasn’t dominated it either. I’m assuming he’ll probably start 09 in SJ? Anyway, I think many of these are a year or two early.

One year
You’re off by one year — unless by this year you mean 2008, not 2009. Mad Bum turns 20 next August 1st, and AnVil follows shortly thereafter, turning 19 on August 13th.
Actually, 2008 IS this year — but it will be REALLY tough for the Giants to call up either player in September of 2008.

Not to pile on, but you realistically hope to see MadBum, Alderson, AND Pucetas in the rotation by midseason ’09? Are you hoping they go to a 7 man rotation? Or will you be causing injuries to Zito and Sanchez?
Also, if the Giants had a rotation next summer of Lincecum, Cain, MadBum, Alderson, and Pucetas, the average age of our starters would be like 22 years old…

hard to know
A lot of those players haven’t played in the minors yet, and there’s gonna be a few of those players that flop right from the start, or struggle in higher levels…
Posey – September 2010 would probably be the very earliest, in my opinion
Bumgarner – again probably a September 2010 call-up, as he’s further along then most think but I really don’t see any need to rush him. That’s saying that he progresses at a normal rate with his offspeed pitches, and not at the ridiculous rate that he progressed this season.
Alderson – probably 2010, he’s a little further along
Villalona – I’m not quite as high on AnVil as most here… but I really want to see him succeed. I’d say again 2010 September call-up would be the VERY earliest for him. I’d like to see them take it slow with him and shift him to 3rd though, personally.
Sosa – assuming this down year was because of injuries and not him sliding off, probably September 2010
Noonan – I’d say 2011, they like his strike zone judgment but the umpires must not, he rarely walks but hits for a decent average, not enough to vault him to the majors fast
Tanner – my favorite pitcher in our minor league system (not because he’s the best, I just think he’s very overlooked, and for some reason I like him more then the others because of that) but really he needs to show the same improvement that he showed in his last few starts at the end of this season. If he does, September 2010 or 2010 with injuries to our pitching staff
Fairley – I really like Fairley. That being said, 2011 at the earliest. I think he’ll be a stud though
Pucetas – maybe September 2009? Possibly earlier if injuries come or he progresses fast?
GIllaspie – Hopefully not until September 2010, I don’t have as much faith in him as most. I think he’ll be decent but not put up numbers worthy of a 3rd baseman.
Rodriguez – not anytime soon. So, I’m gonna say 2009 starting center fielder after Rowand suffers an injury being a gamer in spring training

Your times seem reasonable
Posey: Tidrow/Evans said something about 300 minor league games so late 2010 seems right.
Alderson: Could be sooner if they go the Sanchez route and bring him up as a reliever.
Big V: 2009 Hi A, 2010 AA/AA 2011 AAA/SF and agree with move to 3b
Sosa/Pucetas/Tanner: Trade bait?
Fairley: A bit old for AZL, could move quickly if he finds it
Gillaspie: If SF does not make a move for 3b, Dizzy could be in The City come summer
Rodriguez:: By Obama’s second term

Alderson and Posey September call ups next year…MadBum start of 2011…Most others sept call ups in 2011 (this would be a very optimistic time table for Big V)…rodriguez Id be happy for september call up in 2012 but we are probably looking 2013
by HitorMisch on Oct 10, 2008 12:47 AM PDT 0 recs
the only guy I can see having a realistic shot at seeing any major league time this year beyond a cup of coffee is Alderson. He’ll start the season in AA and if he’s any good, I can see him being up in July or August depending on the big club’s pitching situation. However, if they want to call him up as a reliever, I’d take a pass. He needs more innings and starting is the best way to do that. Jerking kids around from starter to reliever is just asking for injury.
IF Mad Bum starts the season in AA, then he could be up as well, though I think it’d be a Sept call up thing. Otherwise, 2010 at the soonest.

I disagree
Bumgarner is on track to show up mid 2009.
If he takes the Cain approach, he will be up after ~400 MIL innings, which would mean early 2010.
the Kershaw approach puts him in after 200MiL innings. He’s at about 150 right now.

From what I’ve been reading on this site, it seems like MadBum doesn’t have much in terms of secondary pitches. Everyone in the majors can hit a fastball, it’s the offspeed stuff that fools hitters. Has he learned, or do you think he’ll learn, a secondary pitch by mid 2009?

I think there is a fair amount of debate as to his secondary pitches.
Some think he gotz them, some don’t.
I’ve never seen him pitch, so I don’t know.
If he mows down AA like he did low A this year, He will be up next season.

If he does it all year sure, he might get a Sept callup
If he does it for two months and then they call him up in May/June I think they’re making a terrible move.

I don't necessarily agree
I think that if he is dominating for the first couple months of the season in AA, it’s probably worth pulling him up (like Kershaw) and seeing what happens.

My concern
with his offspeed pitches is not if they’re quality. the problem is he never throws them. Everyone who watched him said he threw his fastball about 85% of the time and that just won’t work at higher levels, unless his pitch is a Brandon Webb type unhittable sinker, which it isn’t.

The Giants don’t seem to be in a hurry to bring him up. Yes, he dominated Low A ball, but he has to show a bit more at higher levels before getting called to the bigs. His secondary pitches, while not as a good as his fastball, are coming around, and he’ll need to use them more at the higher levels. Of course, if he dominates A+ and AA, then he might be called up. I just think that the callup in 2009 is unlikely, regardless of what he does.
But I don’t see him being handled the same way as Kershaw. Kershaw was promoted aggressively by the Dodgers so that at the end of his first full season he was in AA ball (age 19), which is where he started 2008. The Dodgers rotation was in complete shambles when Kershaw was brought up in May, which also necessitated the need.
Mad Bum hasn’t been promoted like that. He spent his entire first year in Augusta despite utter domination of the league. Also, the Giants rotation is in much better shape than LA’s was at the time. Also, why start his service clock earlier than need be when they can afford to wait? The need to rush him simply isn’t there (right now, but that could change if they trade Cain or Sanchez.)
Mad Bum is a special pitcher and the team seems to be taking a slow approach with him. That isn’t to say they won’t speed things up in 2009, but the evidence thus far is that isn’t their plan.

Kershaw essentially was handled the exact same way they handled Greg Miller, who was in AA (and dominating) as an 18 year old. Apparently they believe in aggressive promotion of their high ceiling pitchers. Stuff seems to be the push factor for them, at least through the lower levels.

at least Kershaw made the show. But that’s the Dodgers.
The Giants don’t have a record of doing that with pitchers. Lincecum is the only guy who skyrocketed thru the system, but he was already a very polished pitcher and not a high school draftee, and it was the obvious move.

Neukom
Neukom’s comments on this issue the other day (as quoted by Andy Baggarly) were interesting and encouraging :
“Then there’s the next round of talent which is deeper in our farm system. We want to bring those people along in a way that enables them to convert their gifts into major league skills and we think we’ll have maybe a little more time and a little more discretion. Some of the people who came up this year, frankly, came up sooner than might have been perfect if we’d had a deeper system. It somewhat accelerated things in 2008 and we hope we can get to more of a sort of modulated progression for this very promising talent as we bring these people along from Single-A to Double-A to Triple-A and up to the Giants.”
I can’t see how any of these terrific young kids, who were only in A or rookie leagues this year, could be ready for the show anytime in 2009 – and in light of Neukom’s remarks, I’d be surprised if any of them were called up, no matter how well they do.
