Would Delmon Young be worth a look?
According to the Sid Hartman of the Star Tribune, the Twins may dangle Young after the emergence of Denard Span.
Yes the Giants have tons of outfielders but Young could be a superstar. Would the Giants be willing to deal some of their young talent to land Young? Obviously his stock has dropped. So what would it take to get him? Is it worth it?
I am thinking Sanchez + lesser prospect.
Is that too much?
Oh and Matt Cain for Prince Fielder!!!!!

I don’t want to give up Sanchez for him. I’d take him, but probably not for a realistic price in terms of what we’d give up for him.

Well...
Yeah. It could allow the Giants to deal Winn though. And let’s not forget that Young was one of the top prospects in the game a year ago giving him a bit more upside than any of the other outfielders we have. Just throwing it out there.

I like the idea of buying low on this guy, but it would add to our outfield glut. you gotta figure that he will put it together at some point, having been so highly touted; however, even if he does pick up with the bat, these rankings have him as one of the worst outfielders in the game. Raul Ibanez bad, it seems.

What issues? He had league-average numbers at age 22.

Right.
But he has been called a 5-tool stud and his power has yet to develop. Add to that a bit of an OBP problem and you have some cause for concern.

he's a poor corner outfielder with league-average numbers
and no power and little plate discipline.
overall, he was basically replacement level this year.

The Twins Got Screwed And They Have Figured It Out

You need to tell me how you know...
1. That a guy that has been in the league two full years and who is only 23 will never be good. He would be the third youngest position player on the Giants. I gues we should assume that Alex Gordon and Phillip Hughes will never be good either. Dumb.
2. That the Giants would never go for a guy with questionable character. Right. Never happened. Dumb.
Sorry but you are talking out of your ass.

I guess he’s still got a world of potential, but at the moment he doesn’t do anything well, and I’m having a hard time coming up with examples of young players who were so completely hapless after two-plus years in the league but went on to become stars. There’s Sammy Sosa, and then … ?

Clemente was one of the first players I thought of, and he’s not a bad comp. But when he was 21 he hit .311, third in the league, and struck out half as much as Delmon did. And of course he was probably the best defensive RF in the history of the game.
Ibanez is an exemplar of the gamer made good: not particularly talented but hustling, driven, coachable, finally figures out the league as he approaches 30. Hard to compare that to Delmon. Aurilia too is just a completely different sort of player.
Alfonso Soriano would be another good optimistic comp.

Yeah. And of course for each of those guys, there’s also a dozen who never put it together (though his older brother didn’t start hitting for power until his mid twenties). I wouldn’t trade a ton for Da Lil Meat Hook, but I wouldn’t dismiss his potential all together.

Clemente's .311
was good for a 105 OPS+, which was worse than any season of his after turning 25. Delmon’s OPS+ this year? 100.

the question with delmon young is pretty simple to me: what do you think will happen with his power. If you’re a believer that that’s going to bust out sometime in the next few years and transform him into a 30+ HR per year type of guy, I think you have to go for him. Personally, I do think that’s something he’ll develop, although imagining his shaky defense in left next to Rowand scares me a little.

Twins Are Pretty Smart But The Rays Were Even Smarter
The Rays realized he wasn’t likely to hit for Power and that is why they traded him. The Twins have now come to the same conclusion and that is why they are shopping him.

no
The Rays traded him because they could get a pretty good package for him, and is part of the reason they’ve had the best season in franchise history. The twins would want to trade him because they have too many outfielders, and he has by far the most value in a trade.

He is exactly the type of player
That the Giants should be trying to buy low on. I’m not sure that giving up Sanchez however is the right approach as we don’t have anyone to fill the spot.
But I would certainly be interested in pursuing him. He could play 1b if the outfield remained crowded.

As part of a 3-way deal?
Absolutely. We can give up Sanchez as our centerpiece, as well as assorted spare parts. Young can be the Twins gift to some other team. And we can get back a young, controllable IF that can actually hit or has a good chance of hitting in the very near future.
Hector Sanchez: really getting tired of playing baseball in foreign countries...
by tedfordfan on Oct 9, 2008 5:49 AM PDT 0 recs
Hmm...
As others have been saying, I wouldn’t be too upset if the Giants traded for Young, but only if they buy low for him. I could see giving up Sanchez – the kid still has massive potential, and the Giants need hitting more than they need pitching, I don’t think anyone could argue that. So, if they were able to get him for less than he’s worth, I’d be happy, but I’d be very worried that they’ll overpay for him, a la Zito and Rowand. Ugh.
by ololo3 on Oct 9, 2008 10:01 AM PDT 0 recs
Is giving up Sanchez for Young buying low?
That really seems like a situation of trading potential for potential. Dirty has the potential to become an awesome picher and Young has the chance to become a great hitter. It’s obvious we need the hitting right now, but I feel like Sanchez has a greater chance of reaching his potential. That is probably because I’ve seen Sanchez pitch a whole lot more than Young play.
The trade would also create a hole in the rotation to add another player to the outfield. That hole could be filled with an average stop gap free agent, but if the Giants did that I’d like it to go to a position of greater need.
I guess what I’m saying is that I wouldn’t have a huge problem with it, but I don’t agree that it’s a no brainer trade to make.
