Listening to KNBR...

Sooo, i was listening to a bunch of recent KNBR stuff where they were talking to Larry Baer, Krukow and Kuiper and they all kinda hinted at trades and possibly signing Sabathia. So i made this up. what we should do and what the team would look like.

Trade Matt Cain and Henry Sosa to the Milwaukee Brewers for Prince Fielder and J.J. Hardy. Both are arbitartion eligible, they need pitching and they have a young star SS that is blocked by Hardy.

Emmanuel Burriss will move to 2B where 'blocking' Frandsen shouldnt be that big of a deal.

Pablo Sandoval will move to 3B where he played an errorless 85 innings. Doesnt mean he'll be a gold glove winner, just means its possible he can handle himself there.

Sign CC Sabathia who is from the Bay Area, has expressed interest in playing close to where he grew up, and who is friends with Prince Fielder.

Sign Juan Cruz to be a set up man for the team.

Trade Randy Winn. Maybe for a minor league pitcher to replace Sosa.

Trade Dave Roberts for anyone, or release him.

When you say “hinted”, what exactly were they saying to give you this impression? Do you recall any exact quotes?

Why trade Winn? Just for the sake of trading him? He is solid on offense and excellent on defense. Unless the Giants get someone decent for him in a trade, I’d rather keep him on the team.

There amass been plenty of articles written this spring about the stud shortstop Matt Cain and Tim Lincecum , as well as the fluid young outfielders and thirteen basemen Kevin Frandsen.

If we’re trading for Fielder and Hardy then I would assume we’re going for it. Then keeping Winn makes the most sense.

Travis Denker can hit a little. That's why I drive his bus. Not much about baseball here .

by oldjacket on Oct 8, 2008 5:16 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Nate Schierholtz is why. The bigger question is why give up Cain AND Sosa if the Brewers are so desperate to unload their guys?

"he walked 18; new league record! Struck out 18, another new league record! He also hit the sportswriter, the PA announcer, the bull mascot twice..."

If you want to win baseball games, Randy Winn is the better bet than Nate Schierholtz.

winning in 2009

shouldn’t be our top priority. If we’re shooting toward 2010/11 I’d rather get Schierholtz some ABs sooner than later

yeah, but . . .

If you’re trading for Fielder and Hardy, then you’re trying to win in 2009. You see where we’re going with this?

Travis Denker can hit a little. That's why I drive his bus. Not much about baseball here .

“winning in 2009 shouldn’t be our top priority”

It should be if you want to keep a fanbase.
Sure, the unconditional fans like us will always exist, but we’re a small minority.

by AmorVincitOmnia on Oct 11, 2008 11:08 AM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

But I should also bring up the point...

Sabean or Magowan had clearly stated years ago that they never wanted to rebuild the way that the Indians did after their dynasty days. Where they went young for a few years. Their fanbase was just like “we’ll see you when you have a good team.”
Sabes and Magowan said they’d never do such a thing.
One year of “rebuilding” was probably all that they had in mind. Expect them to make a splash this offseason and do everything in their abilities to create a winning team.

by AmorVincitOmnia on Oct 11, 2008 11:13 AM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

You really expect Schierholtz to be better than Winn? Next year?

..so allow me to present Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain as two sweet, sweet bottles of warming hooch.

by Cookyman on Oct 8, 2008 5:25 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I would attack this for being another “trade Cain” thread, but I admire the work put into the depth chart.

Apple Strudel Pop Tarts. They suck, but some stupid person at work keeps eating all the ones in the vending machine until it gets to Apple Strudel again, and then if I want Pop Tarts, I have to get Apple Strudel. And then this jerk gets to cycle through the good flavors again until it gets to Apply Strudel and I want Pop Tarts again.

I would have had cereal, but I slept in until 15 minutes before I had to leave for work. Basically shower, dress, drive, Pop Tart at that point.

I hope the Giants don’t go after and overpay a guy like Juan Cruz. I like Romo in the setup role. I’d rather mix and match with some veterans (Embree/Brocail) because I got sick and tired of our middle relievers crumbling (I am talking to you Sadler and Walker) – a proven veteran would at least provide some stability.

Also, Hardy and Fielder for Cain would be stupid for the Brewers. They can get pitching for a fraction of the cost. Fielder would be fun and so would Hardy but I think we are missing the point that even Neukom isn’t trying to contend realistically in ‘09 – of course they would never say that publicly – this team is being built for 2010. I don’t want to trade for a masher at 1B because he might block AnVil – I’d rather see the Giants go after Cantu or Atkins – guys who can play both corners and will cost less.

No seriously. we are all on the same team here. We all wanna see the giants get better. You all obviously care about the team enough to where youve come to this forum to talk about the team, so why so upset when someone wants to TALK ABOUT THE TEAM?

I mean, its a forum. Its kinda the only thing you can do here. Unless… anyone need a date? singles?

I dont know gang. Ive been reading here for a while now. pretty new to writing on here. Just dont really understand the whole bashing on other people for talking about the team that the website is based on. In a forum no less, where all you really can do is talk. just dont get it. Is everyone really that bored to where theyd rather look at the oh-so humorous off topic pictures that people have laying around on their computer, that they post?

Or is everyone just confused. “God damnit… someones bringing up the Giants again on that Giants website. Fuck. Ok.. think, think. Got it.” (typing) ‘Highjack. What is your favorite flavor of vitamin water/gatorade. Im a tropical citrus vitamin water fan myself’.

Yeah I understand

its been talked about. But what else is there to talk about. I mean its post season, the giants are out of it. I mean Iphones, Delmon young, and the A’s future are some of the most recent topics on fanposts. Id personally rather talk about CC with you all. If YOU dont want to talk about, then you dont have to read what i wrote or comment. I mean, you have other things going on in your lives right, no ones forcing you to be on here.

I think its just got to the point where everyone is upset if someone wants to talk about something thats been talked about.

That was great research Cookyman, the only thing is in those listed links, the following hijacks took place:
Favorite Chips
What FM radio stations people listen to
Favorite position to play on the baseball diamond
What was your first car?
What are you reading right now
Worst uniform of all time
Favorite fast food
Favorite non-alcoholic drink
Most interesting thing you’ve ever found in your food
Best condiment ever
What people had for breakfast.

So do you like to TALK ABOUT THE TEAM?

I mean I consider myself a pretty big baseball nerd. Just look at the depth chart.

But I dont think I could ever be such a nerd to where I come to a baseball forum to NOT talk about baseball. I just dont get it. I couldnt wast my time like that. I know you guys are all legit die hard fans, but I dont understand actually spending time feeding into the most recent Hijack.

Im a pretty imature person. Love alot of dumb jokes, but even I looked down upon that after the second time I saw one.

If you dont like a post that someone wrote, you can always just stay away, you dont have to comment. think about it.

Just been seeing ALOT of hijacking on people who are here to talk about the team.

by kvdp12 on Oct 9, 2008 1:10 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

The reason all of those topics you see were hijacked

Is because the topic of trading Cain for Fielder had already been beat to death before even those were posted. You are Months behind the curve on this one.

There was, a long time ago, a legitimate Cain for fielder Fanpost or three. The topic was discussed, analyzed, and retired.

Some thought it was a good idea, the others (correctly) thought it was poor. Some people even changed their mind.

But it has literally been brought up some umpteen times in the last few months, and there is no new information to inject into the discussion.

I understand your desire to talk about baseball, and trust me – everyone here shares it. We are about the biggest group of baseball nerds in existence.

But If you do want to do so, try bringing up a topic that has not been beat to death dozens of times before you got here.

If you think you have something new to bring to an old discussion, then post that. Saying “I’ve read the Cain for Fielder arguments, but I think that people are failing to consider _” will get you a lot farther than “hey guys, I’ve got an idea! Let’s trade Cain for Fielder!”.

The only reason this post did not get immediately and thoroughly hijacked is because you obviously put a lot of effort into thinking your POV through, which is a lot more than I can say for most of those other Cain for Fielder outbursts. You did bring some other angles to the conversation, and as a result got a little bit of positive feedback.

But the Cain v. Fielder debate has at this point elevated itself into the stupid fanpost hall of fame (Joining Crede, Cain Sucks, Etc), and anyone who invokes that as even part of their topic risks harsh knee jerk retribution.

Eugeniooooooo!!!!

by FairweatherFan on Oct 9, 2008 1:20 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Don't be talking trash about Crede

Your 2009 Giants 3B wouldn’t be too happy with such criticism!

Seriously though, his logic is flawed. If he’s going to invoke, “If you don’t like the topic, then don’t read it”, then we’ll happily invoke, “If you don’t like the hijack, then don’t read it.” You can look at the serious responses to the topic and respond to them if you like. However, you won’t find many, for the reasons FWF listed.

It’s a democracy here (as opposed to the dictatorship that Grant would lead you to believe), and if you’re upset that people don’t want to talk about it, then try to bring something new to the table. It’s like watching politics these days…every day you get pounded with “Obama sucks because __” or “McCain sucks because _”. Eventually you get tired of it and switch the channel.

Basically what FWF said, just a couple more things
its been talked about. But what else is there to talk about. I mean its post season, the giants are out of it. I mean Iphones, Delmon young, and the A’s future are some of the most recent topics on fanposts.

What’s wrong with talking about trading for Delmon Young?

I think its just got to the point where everyone is upset if someone wants to talk about something thats been talked about. (…) If you dont like a post that someone wrote, you can always just stay away, you dont have to comment. think about it.

I agree. But you also don’t have to post new FanPosts. If you know that everyone is sick of discussing a certain topic, why write a FanPost about it? We all love baseball, but I prefer to talk about books or music or whatever rather than explain to Sharksrog for the 5th time why I don’t think that it’s a good idea to trade Cain for Fielder.

But I dont think I could ever be such a nerd to where I come to a baseball forum to NOT talk about baseball. I just dont get it. I couldnt wast my time like that. I know you guys are all legit die hard fans, but I dont understand actually spending time feeding into the most recent Hijack.

And now you’re just insulting people for no reason.

I’ve been turning into one of the bigger jerkwads on this site lately, and even I’m not going to tell the established people on this site how they should act.

Seriously, a person’s first act on this website shouldn’t be to put up a fanpost. That’s just asking for a beating of the typed-out kind. But to make your first act be a fanpost where you re-hash an old idea, immediately berate the people on the site and try to tell them what NOT to do… Well, that’s just foolish behavior.

to be clear

most of us have no problem with this post. It is well thought out, presented well and addresses the topic in a way that hasn’t been done. As you can see, there was a lot of positive feedback on this topic. Silliness, well, that’s just what the McCoven are made of and you aren’t going to get rid of it completely. The problem a lot of us have is when a topic gets beat to the ground with consecutive posts that aren’t well thought out and are generally out of the realm of possibility. This is clearly not one of those. relax.

If the price is right

Seriously hope Sabean checks out these three players. Know Tex will be expensive but if $17M a season should consider. If can get Burrell on three year deal for decent monies should consider. Would offer Furcal an huge incentive laden deal. If he produces then he makes a ton of money, if not then less risk.

Both Tex and Burrell could hit clean-up and be the run producer necessary. Furcal would be an excellent leadoff hitter and SS needed.

Do you want to pay $10+ million per year for a quicker Rich Aurilia? That’s what you’re getting with Furcal.

Teixiera, while a solid player, is not someone to build your lineup around. And with the kind of money he’ll demand, that’s what you’d be paying him for. Plus there’s no way he falls to the Giants—if the Angels don’t re-sign him, the Yanks surely will.

Burrell…I don’t know enough about to say anything, really.

I do

Burrell is so good a left-fielder that the Philies regularly replaced him in LF for defensive purposes. In the 2008 season, he was taken out of the game in over 100 games, near the end of the game, I counted 102 but lost my count once or twice, close enough.

The only silver lining is that he was originally a 1B and perhaps he can be passable there if we put him there. However, in brief play his first season, he was below average there, both in fielding percentage and range factor per 9 innings.

But given his hitting, he’s going to want a huge contract; he’s made for an AL team.

Plus, he’s going to be 32 next season, probably at least 36 if he gets a 5 year contract, and he’s not going to get better at fielding, plus those last years are the prime years for decline, a risk for at least half of that contract, if not most.

Sandoval at 3B

Maybe the reason he didn’t make any errors at 3B was because he couldn’t reach the balls: his range factor is about 1 less than the league average for range factor. Now, perhaps that could be because of the Giants having two lefties in the rotation, plus Misch starting some, plus Lincecum striking out so many batters, yet Castillo, Aurilia, Rohlinger, McClain, even Gillaspie in limited play, had a range factor (per 9 innings) that was over 2, playing at 3B. And the ones I consider true 3B, Rohlinger and McClain, had the best of the group, 2.50 and 2.75, respectively, compared with league average of 2.60 (Sandoval had a 1.80). In fact, I recall Winn saying that McClain had a great glove at 3B when they were on a minor league together.
