OT: baseball podcasts
The offseason is nearly upon us, and these last two days without mlb games have reminded me how badly I will yearn for "news" in the near future.
So: I want to see if anyone here is tuned into good baseball audio content on net. It doesn't have to be a podcast, per se, just something to take me away from work while my screen says I'm doing it.
I regularly download the BP radio clips, and generally like them (though their interview skills leave much to be desired). I also get the Baseball America podcast - has some good depth, but I'm not going to listen to them drone on about the top prospects in the Cape Cod league (though I know some of you will). I've also listened to David Pinto do the Baseball Musings webcast for the last few months, but, frankly, his solo voice usually bores me pretty quick. I used the do the Chron Giants-cast with Schulman, but it was fairly thin and infrequent.
I listened briefly to the Northern Cal Sports report (or network?), and I liked the tone and analysis, but don't need all the different sports. Is anyone up on the "the pitch"; saw this yesterday, and it seemed kind of interesting. Do I have to resort to the mlb and espn stuff. Surely there is something else out there.
Feel free to chime in with other cool podcasts you listen to outside of baseball (and sports!) I really like a couple of WNYC programs - "On the Media" and "Radio Lab" - and, of course, need to download my full compliment of CBC radio programs (to keep me honest, living south of the border).

podcasts
I download any non player/coach interviews on KNBR’s Fitz N Brooks or Razor & Mr. T’s pages (though Don Nelson shows are mandatory), I always go for the PTI podcasts on ESPN’s Podcenter page, Mike & Mike’s show had both Obama & McCain on recently, and the sports reporters can be good at times. KQED’s site has some good stuff (I like the commonwealth club and other formats like that). I’d love to find a good sci-fi or comic book podcast. Outside of that I can’t get enough of good audio books.

Bash PTI all you want
but it covers a bunch of topics in 24-25 minutes, which is almost the amount of time it takes me to drive from my house to my girlfriends place in berkeley

I...
Happen to like PTI. And during the baseball season when most of the talk is about baseball, I enjoy it a lot. When it’s not really baseball related, meh.

The Chronicle has a Giants podcast with Henry Schulman, but it’s updated pretty infrequently.
Baseball America has one as well, but the sound quality is often really, really bad – like, much worse than any amateur podcast I’ve ever heard – and they often talk about amateur baseball, which I’m not really that interested. But it can be interesting around the time of the draft and when they release the top prospects lists.
Re: the non-baseball ones, On the Media and RadioLab are great shows! And I too listen to a lot of CBC stuff, despite not being a Canadian. I love the CBC Radio 3 stuff, and am also a fan of As It Happens, Writers & Company, Spark, and some other stuff as well.

Tell me of these CBC Podcasts?
I know of the CBC in general, but tell me about their podcasts. What sort of content do they put out? Do you have a link to On the Media? What’s RadioLab?
Down in Front Meat!
With the CBC, it depends. They provide full shows for some of their weekly shows – like the aforementioned Writers & Company (interviews with authors, literary critics, etc.) and Spark (a quirky program about technology). For other shows, like the daily news show As It Happens, the podcasts are highlights of the full programs.
CBC Radio 3 is focused on indie music by Canadian bands. They have several podcasts, including an indie chart show, another podcast where they broadcast live in-studio performances, and a song of the day podcast.
On the Media’s website is http://www.onthemedia.org/ – there should be a link to the podcast there somewhere. RadioLab is another show produced by WNYC – it focuses on science stories, but in a really interesting way. They tackle really complex issues, but in a way that’s designed to appeal to those of us who’re humanities types and never made it through to advanced science or math classes in school. They only produce about 8 episodes per season, but they’re always fantasic. Their website is http://www.wnyc.org/shows/radiolab/

And if anyone cared, I could produce a ridiculously long list of good podcasts. I listen to a rather insane amount of ’em. I listen to them after I drop my son off from daycare, when I go to pick him up again, when I cook, when I do dishes, when I walk the dog, when I do grocery shopping…
It’s an addiction, really.

The "Great Lecture Series"
Is like crack. I could listen to them all day, and since they generally are about some historical period I enjoy I devour them whenever possible. Best part is that they are full semesters worth of lectures. Throw in audio books read by Jim Dale and I’m a junky

What the hell
Like I said, it’s ridiculously long. I’ll leave out the shows already mentioned by myself or others (This American Life).
Addicted to Race: podcast on anti-racist activism
B-Side Radio: monthly program where each episode presents several stories on a single topic – sort of like an amateur This American Life.
Analysis: BBC program that, surprise surprise, analyses a news story in depth each week. On hiatus at the moment.
A Prairie Home Companion’s News From Lake Woebegon: Garrison Keillor’s weekly monologue.
The Writer’s Almanac: another Keillor program – a 5-minute daily program on the writers who were born on this day in history.
Sound Opinions: the self-proclaimed “world’s only rock-n-roll talk show,” hosted by music critics Jim DeRegotis and Greg Kott.
Speaking of Faith: public radio program on religion, ethics, and related topics – from a nondenominational (and, it’s fair to say, liberal) perspective.
BBC History Magazine: monthly program with stories from the eponymous magazine.
Quirks & Quarks: another CBC program, this one on science.
Documentaries: in-depth radio documentary programs from the BBC World Service on a variety of topics.
Escape Pod: readings of science fiction short stories
Etown: another music program – live performances. Mostly folk/bluegrass, but they also do rock and pop acts.
From Our Own Correspondent: dispatches from the BBC’s foreign correspondents on various topics related to the countries they’re posted to.
The History of Rome: from its mythological founding to its fall – on hiatus at the moment, but I think the archives are still available.
Okay, this is getting really long. I’m going to post this and continue on in another comment.
What man? Which man? Who’s the man? When’s a man a man? What makes a man a man? Am I a man? Yes. Technically I am. - FotC
In Our Time: another BBC program – intellectual roundtable discussions on high fallutin’ topics, usually to do with science, literature, or history.
Indiefeed: Indie Pop – song of the day podcast
The Interface: video podcast of live in-studio performances by indie bands
Le Show: Harry Shearer’s radio program – if you don’t know him, he’s one of the voices on The Simpsons and a member of Spinal Tap. He’s also a bit of a crank, but an amusing one.
KCRW Today’s Top Tune: another song of the day podcast.
KEXP Song of the day: self explanatory.
The Moth: stories told live on stage in NYC by various people – hard to explain, but usually really interesting.
MPR: The Current Song of the Day: self explanatory
The Noise Pop New Music Podcast: monthly music podcast from the folks who do the Noise Pop festival.
NPR: Foreign Dispatch: collection of international stories from NPR
NPR: Fresh Air: NPR’s daily interview program
NPR: Playback: monthly podcast featuring NPR stories from 25 years ago this month.
NPR: Story of the Day: self expanatory
The Onion News Network / The Onion Radio News: brief, funny video and audio podcasts from The Onion
Podcastle: readings of fantasy short stories – affiliated with Escape Pod, listed above.
Selected Shorts: readings of literary short stories by actors
To the Best of Our Knowledge: a variety of interviews about a single topic chosen for each program.
Real Time: audio-only podcast of Bill Maher’s HBO show. Maher drives me nuts on a regular basis, but somehow I keep listening and usually enjoying it.
SModcast: podcast by the filmmaker Kevin Smith and his producer Scott Mosier – basically silly conversations about random topics. Funny stuff if you like Kevin Smith.
Sparkletack: podcast on San Francisco history. It was on hiatus for a long time – currently it’s come back in the form of brief weekly shows. Hopefully it’ll return to more in-depth stuff soon.
Strong Bad Email: a SBEmail every week – supposedly. Hasn’t been updated in a few weeks.
Studio 360: public radio program on pop culture and the arts. Done by WNYC, which also produces On the Media and RadioLab.
Washington Week: audio only podcast of PBS’s roundtable show on politics.
World Book Club: monthly BBC program featuring authors being interviewed about one of their works.
Wrestlecrap Radio: shit, how do I even describe this one? It’s the podcast of wrestlecrap.com, a long-running humor website that chronicles the stupidest gimmicks, worst matches, and most ridiculous storylines in pro wrestling. The podcast features some talk about wrestling’s absurdities, but also all sorts of other stuff, including segments such as Trip to the Grocery and the Weekly Wrestling Haiku. Deeply silly – I listen to wind down after work at the end of the week.
Okay, that’s it. Finally done. Phew.

thanks for posting the links, jcb9. I love the weekly Radio 3 indie show as well, if only because it is virtually my only connection to new music these days. I know, pretty sad.
In that case, you should check out NPR’s All Songs Considered! They have three podcasts: the main one, which features new (mostly indie) music each week, a live concert podcast (they’ve had everyone from Radiohead to Wilco to Neko Case to Iron & Wine in the past), and a song of the day podcast called Second Stage.
All Songs Considered and CBC R3 re my favorite music podcasts by far.

Also I can't fucking stand the Chronicle or SJ Merc podcasts
I wish there was a site similar to Joox or ninjavideo that archived links to podcasts by category.

The Baseball America
podcast is pretty long and covers a ton of ground. that’s the only one i’ve ever really considered listening. I’m not a fan of sports radio.
With regards to non-baseball podcasts, I’m a huge fan of NPR’s three. This American Life is essential and it’s the best program on radio IMO. Story of the day is usually interesting and the 7 a.m. news report is nice to wake up to and listen to on the way to class. Wait wait don’t tell me is another radio show that i’ll give a listen every once in a while. outside of those, i’m not a huge podcast listener.

Baseball Musings podcast is good, but poorly produced.
I get a kick out of ESPN’s Fantasy Focus Podcasts even though they are about 40% sports to 60% Anne Hathaway content.
Travis Denker can hit a little. That's why I drive his bus. Not much about baseball here .
I think there's always room for Anne Hathaway content..
unfortunately it doesn’t work as well in audio format.

Thanks jcb, those definitely are worth looking into. When I was in Canada I really enjoyed their broadcasts, it was rather refreshing take on things. I usually catch the Commonwealth Club on Sunday mornings on the radio.
As for non-baseball casts and those with a scientific leaning or interested in such; Berkeley Groks is very good. Just remember it’s from Berkeley so if your more conservative in your thinking they might aggravate you from time to time. Slacker Astronomy is fun and informative.

I appeared once on the podcast this summer, talking with host Tony Cincotta about the state of the Giants minor leaguers. It’s a good program. Tony has a wide variety of guests from the blogosphere.
"While conservatives tell you 'leave things alone and no one will lose,' and liberals tell you 'interfere a lot and no one will lose,' baseball says 'someone will lose.' Not only says it - but insists upon it! ... Democracy is lovely, but baseball's more mature." BVCE supports SF Dugout and Manny Burriss.

Not just baseball related
But I enjoy the Dan Patrick Show, it’s a good way to get you through the morning. Plus he always has good interviewees on.
